Chapter 55: 55. Please goddess... Send anyone to my rescue.

"Show yourself! Show yourself!!!" She swung her dagger with all her might and in empty air as she screamed and cried bitterly.

"As your Ladyship pleases." The voices came again and abruptly everything went silent. So silent that the sound of her heartbeat was becoming deafening. It was so loud. It was the only thing she could hear. Every other thing was still and silent. Even her breath. She was holding it, holding it with everything in her.

"Ahh!" She flinched and yelped as something moved on the dry leaves on the ground. The place was dark. She could see nothing, then she remembered, although she could not use her elven powers well yet, she could still bring forth a little shimmer of light from her palms.

Shivering, she tried to focus her attention on her palm, trying to channel some energy into her hand. "Please, please work." She muttered. "Damn this forest, please! Work." She cried as she clenched and u clenched her fist trying to bring forth a little sparkle at the very least.

She shook her hand and closed her eyes, intending to calm herself a little. She once again focused her energy on her palm and then she opened her eyes and to her utmost relief, her hand was emitting a lemon green glow. She focused more and put in more energy and her glowing palm shined brighter.

Now she was able to see a little. Using her hand as a torch, she turned around her warily. "Ahh!" She flinched again as she felt something crawl on the ground near her feet. She stretched her hand toward the ground to see what it was.

"R_rabbit?" She wondered as she stared at the little furry white creature with big red eyes staring at her. She breathed out a sigh of relief as she realized she had gotten scared by a mere little rabbit. "I must be losing my mind." She muttered to herself. Of course those voices were not real. It was just fear conjuring up things in her head.

Oh so she wished to believe.

"What are you doing out here alone?" She crouched in front of the rabbit. "You have nowhere else to go too?" She asked as she pointed her hand closer to the rabbit so the light could let her see it clearly.

"Of course we do." She flinched and staggered backwards, causing her to fall to the ground as the little rabbit spoke. "We have here." The rabbit spoke again and Neriah’s breath became ragged and her heart seemed to increase it’s beat.

"Why? You desired to see us." The rabbit spoke and the hands and legs were horridly growing bigger and darker. "Now watch and look closely, see..." It was no rabbit. It kept growing bigger and bigger and bigger and Neriah could feel her life slipping away from her body.

She was going to fight. Aye, she was going to fight the beast. But she had heard that the kinds of beasts in the forests were just wild animals that were wilder than normal. Nothing more.

Is this what they meant? What was this creature? Or creatures! It was multiplying. It was growing bigger and multiplying. It was like a wolf, but a very huge wolf, standing upright like a man but taller than an average man!

It had eyes like fiery red rose. Hands like a bear and strong body like those big gorilla’s she had seen in books.

What was this creature? Why was it so tall?

"What say you, royal blood? You have seen and now you must come to us." They said in sync. And their evil cackle filled the air. How many were they? She had no idea. But she was going to be torn to shreds. She was certain.

She didn’t want to die. Not in this horrible forest, nor in the hands of those abominable creatures.

Get up Neriah! She was telling herself in her head. Get up!! Get up and fight! Or better yet run for your life! She said in her head but her legs were numbed by fear. She trembled vehemently as they came closer and closer to her.

"No!! Stay away from me!" She cried out in fear as one hand reached for her and she finally found strength in her limbs as she slashed the hand with her dagger, causing the beast to let out a strained shriek.

She picked herself from the ground and began to run in the opposite direction of the creatures. "I have to get out of here. I have to find my way out." She said to herself as she ran faster than she had ever run in her entire life. She could not see clearly. She could barely avoid running into trees as she made her way through the forest hoping and praying to Aveliana that she was running in the right direction.

She just had to make it to the barrier and get out of the damned forest. She wasn’t going to die there.

She could hear the laugh and shrieks of the creatures chasing her, mocking her. She could hear their whisper in the air that blew past her as she ran towards whatever direction she could take.

She could no longer focus her energy on the light that her hand was emitting so it quickly faded. Now she was running in the dark. Running into trees. Stumbling and crying as she picked herself back up with determination to get out of the forest.

It was better to marry a barbarian than to die inside the damned forest. She was starting to think that way.

She ran and ran till her legs could no longer move and she crashed into another try and fell down. There she broke into tears, wondering how her life had come to this. She could hear the voices of the creatures getting closer and close to her. And she was scared. She was scared beyond words, scared of never seeing her mother and father again even though she claimed to hate them. She was scared of never seeing Aria and Riri again. Most of all she was scared she would never be with Lyle again.

She sat up and folded her knees, drawing close to her chest with her head buried on them. She used her cloak to cover her body even more. Like it was some kind of protective cloak that would hide her from the beasts. She made sure that every part of her body was enclosed within the cloak.

She could not think of anything else to do, maybe she was hoping that if she covered herself like that, then they would not be able to find her. She sniffled and sobbed and she shivered.

She didn’t want to die but those creatures were too big. They were so big and tall. She was a fighter, but not against beasts.

Suddenly he came to her mind. That horribly tall barbarian. He was probably as tall as the beasts. Maybe he could have stood a chance against the creatures. Maybe since he was a barbarian who was used to killing, he could have handled this.

Oh what was she thinking? She cried even more. She prayed someone would save her. She prayed Lyle would magically appear and come to her rescue. Or if not, maybe one of the knights who were searching for her would have seen her entering the forest and was coming to get her.

But who would risk their life for her? She whimpered even more as she realized for once that she had really made the wrong choice of coming into the forest.

The growls of the creatures reached her and she curled up even more and held her cloak even tighter. "Dear goddess," she whispered.

"Royal blood, where art thou?" The voice came again.

"Dear goddess please..."

"There shall be no escaping, little one."

"Please, please anyone. Please, dear goddess, send anyone."

"We shall find you."

"Anyone at all. I will be good. I promise. Please." She prayed and flinched and whimpered as the voice got closer and closer.

"You cannot hide within our home."

"I will not be stubborn." She continued praying.

"We know every corner." and they continued taunting her.

"I will worship you even more than I have been doing. I will be more faithful. So please, please do not forsake me. Do not leave me here to die. Please..."

"Found you!!"

"Ahhhh!" She screamed and instantly rose to her feet, running again as it was all she could do. "Please! Please save me!!" She cried out and ran for her life. "Please I do not wish to d—" her words were cut short as she ran into another tree. Only this tree seemed to be alive. She could feel something like a rapid heart beat. And maybe she was being delusional but the tree had arms and they were wrapped around her body.

What kind of tree has arms, and breathes so heavily, and has this sort of rapid heartbeat? Except it isn’t a tree... A beast.

Slowly, she lifted her head, ready to scream her lungs out as soon as her eyes touched the beast that had captured her.

"You—" He breathed, "You truly are one very foolish Spitfire." He said and she could not see his face, but she saw his eyes. And she knew those eyes and she knew that arrogant tone and voice and she let out a breath of relief she didn’t know she was holding. And impulsively, in her moment of despair and fear she wrapped her hands around him. Holding him so tightly as she whispered, "thank you goddess."
