The Dragon Prince's Bride -
Chapter 53. More lying.
Chapter 53: 53. More lying.
At first Barak had really planned on just watching her for a while before bundling her back to the palace for the wedding. He had really wanted to see her beautiful prince. He thought she’d be meeting him somewhere on the port, but no, instead he washed her go around in search for a better boat and then she was getting on a boat going to a place called Bilgota.
Her lover was yet to show. Was he probably in Bilgota? Or were they going to meet there? Or worse was she just running away from him without a plan?
He was conflicted. He had no idea if he was to pity her as he watched her struggle between two fat men who sat on both her sides or laugh at her because she had brought it upon herself.
She seemed like she was about to vomit.
Was she really willing to go through all that stress to escape him? As wicked as she was, she was rather pitiful too. His father had said it, but she really was a child. One who had been pampered all her life. And for the first time she was not getting what she wanted so she was rebelling.
"Urgh," He gagged dryly as she puked all over the man. Oh, he knew she couldn’t hold it in for much longer. He laughed inwardly as he watched her open her mouth. That swearing mouth of hers calling the man a pig.
Seriously that mouth if hers would get her into big trouble someday. Was she not afraid? Looking at the size of the man, was she not afraid of taking a beating from someone like that?
"Alright this has gone on long enough." He muttered to himself as he saw the big man rising to his feet, causing the boat to sway vehemently. He was going to hit her, Barak could tell.
And he should just let the man. It was no dispute that the little woman was in need of some serious spanking, but still, no one had the right to touch her. She was his to punish if ever need be.
Barak yanked the man’s hand in the air just in time before he hit her and before the man could balance on the swaying boat and stare at the one holding his hand, Barak twisted his hand hand behind his back causing the man to cry out in pain and tossed the man into the water.
Then he turned his attention back to her. Eyes closed, hands raised over her head to protect her face. She looked so vulnerable like this. And beautiful.
He watched as her lashes slowly rose over her eyes and she immediately searched for the fat man, not noticing Barak who was standing there with his hands akimbo. Her head turned and she saw the man struggling in the water.
"Going somewhere, princess?" He lightly said and her head finally turned toward his direction and he wanted to laugh as he saw the eyes go bigger and her mouth opened wide in shock.
"Dear goddess." She breathed out and Barak scoffed.
"Nay, not a goddess. It is just I, Barak Der Drache. Your soon-to-be husband." He said as if trying to help her confirm that she wasn’t seeing things. It really was him. "I believe you have entertained yourself long enough, now shall we return to the palace, my dear? We do not want to be late for our own wedding." He smiled and stretched his hands to her. But he needed no soothsayer to tell him that she was not going to take that hand, instead she was already planning an escape route.
She stared at him with complete horror. She looked like a child who was caught stealing with the thing she stole in her hand. And she looked at his outstretched hand and then at his face. He watched her as her eyes drifted from him to her surroundings, to the wide sea and then back to him.
He watched as she bit her bottom lip while staring past him and he could already tell what sheet was planning. She wanted to run again. She wasn’t going to give up easily.
But surprisingly, she took his hand. His eyes widened as she slid her small palm into his own. His head tilted to the side as he gently helped her climb out of the boat.. And she stood before him, green eyes staring at him calculatively. She wasn’t a quiet one. So why was she being quiet? What was she scheming?
Lord! He wished he could pry into her mind and see what was held in there.
"Help! Somebody help me!" She suddenly cried out. "This barbarian is trying to take me away from my home by force! Help me! I have never met him in my life! Please save me! Help me! I am but a poor maid from the palace and this man set his eyes on me and has refused to set me free! Help me! Please!" She yelled at the top of her voice. How was she able to do this? Barak wondered. How was she able to make her voice tremble with sincerity when she was spewing lies? If he didn’t know her, by the heavens, he too would believe her words and fight for her.
"She lies! I am prince Barak of Trago and she is to be my—"
"Nay! He lies! This man has forced himself upon me and as if that was not enough, he wishes to take me away from my home!" She cried fake tears, and he squeezed her hand in his own, and she let out a sincere cry of pain.
"Shut it." He warned. But was she one to listen? No. Of course not. For her voice only grew louder.
"I do not lie! Look! He has marked me!!" She unclipped her cloak at her chest and revealed her tattooed shoulders to everyone, crying bitterly like her life was about to be taken.
Before Barak knew what was happening, he was quickly surrounded by hefty men. Even the man he had tossed into the water was out, dripping wet and standing before him.
The boatman seemed to have forgotten his business as he too stood before Barak. Everyone was ready to save the damsel in distress.
"You all do not believe this woman, she is a liar and I am Barak Der—" He wanted no fight. But they clearly were not going to listen.
"Whatever and whoever you be, the lady does not wish to follow. Release her this instant." someone yelled from amongst the crowd.
"Aye! Go back to whence you came and get your own woman from amongst your own people!" Someone else yelled.
"Aye! Leave the girl alone, you beast." and sharply, she yanked her hand away from his and before he could gather his senses, she was pulled by people in the crowd into their midst. Men and even women willing to protect her from him.
He stared at her and he saw the smugness on her face as she stood there beyond his reach. The little witch.
...
As soon as Neriah was able to make it into the crowd, she knew she had to run for her life. The crowd would keep him busy so she just had to find somewhere to hide then after he had left, she’d board the boat to Bilgota.
But confusion struck her when she saw royal knights on horses trotting toward the port. Definitely in search of her.
It was about time. It took them longer than she even expected. Considering the time she wasted arguing with the boatman and searching for a better boat, it took them a long time. Aria must have held on for as long as she could.
Like a cornered ant, she stood looking left and right. Front and back. Thinking of what direction to follow to avoid the knights and to also run from Barak who was already having a face off with about fifteen men and some women.
Hiding somewhere in the port was out of the question now because the knights were beginning to search every corner of the place.
She meandered through people, clipping her cloak back and covering her head to hide her hair and face as she constantly held her breath, making her way out the port.
Where was she to go? Who was she to meet for help? She had no one outside the palace? She trembled and held her breath as she hid behind a stall as a knight passed her on a horse. She let out a weary sigh as she ran out of the port undetected.
Where in the world was she headed? She could not go to the temple because it was an obvious place and she was sure it would be flowing with me searching for her. For now she had to lay low. She knew she had to wait before trying to get a boat to Bilgota again. The port was not safe now either.
Now, she had to find a place. A place with no one in sight. A place they would not believe a precious princess like her would go to.
A place like... "A forest!"
