The Dragon Prince's Bride -
Chapter 243. Old friend.
Chapter 243: 243. Old friend.
In the heart of the forest of the damned laying side by side were two souls who were far from being damned. With the back of the man resting upon a big tree and the woman’s back resting upon the chest of her husband, they remained in each other’s arms away from the world of people and dwelled in a place, a space where just the two of them and their unborn child existed.
Fingers intertwined upon the protruding stomach of the woman.
A stolen wedding ring finally returned, resting on the finger of its rightful owner. And the rings on both their fingers matched and the woman could not help but smile with much satisfaction as she stared at the wedding bands around both their fingers.
’Twas perfect.
As it should have always been.
"Should we return to the cottage now?" The man asked. "Everyone must be waiting for us." He reminded her.
"Just a while longer." The woman turned slightly till she was nestled in his arms with the left side of her face pressed upon his chest and her arms wrapped around his waist. "I want to remain alone with you for a while longer."
"Very well." The man pressed a kiss upon her head and held her. "Let us remain like this."
With her face pressed upon his chest, the woman could feel the slight difference in skin on his chest. That spot that covered his heart, she could feel the slight swell there.
A scar.
The only scar that remained on him.
All other wounds had been completely healed by her powers, living no trace behind. Only the one where a dagger had pierced his heart remained. Although it was healed, it left a scar.
Maybe because it was the deepest wound inflicted upon him, or the one the hurt the most. The woman was not certain, but one thing was sure...
That scar close to his heart was a reminder. A reminder of her many bad choices in life. And as she pressed her cheek upon that scar, she vowed in her heart.
To forever atone for her sins to him by being the most loving and faithful wife the world had ever seen. Although she knew not what those words entirely meant, she was certain that gradually as they grew together as man and wife, she would come to learn it.
How to be entirely faithful and loving to him and him alone.
She was going to give him everything she had been too proud and stubborn to give him.
And her first step to doing that was by telling him, without missing it... Every single day for the rest of her life, "I love you. I love you so dearly." She would never fail to confess those words from now until the end of their lives.
She would let him know.
That she loved him.
...
It wasn’t until way past noon did the people who waited in the cottage set their eyes on the married couple again.
"We were starting to think that you’ve both been stolen by the damned souls." Rakavi said with a bright smile on her face as they walked in.
"Oh let it be my dear. I am sure they had some serious catching up to do." Bashan said, hinting at something mischievous and Neriah seemed to quickly get what the man was referring to and it made her blush sweetly to hear her father-in-law tease her.
"Nothing of what you both think happened. We only talked." Barak said as Neriah walked over to sit next to her mother-in-law.
"Certainly. I have those kinds of talks with your father all the time." Rakavi teased further and Neriah sitting next to her hid her face in her palms while Barak gave up on explaining any further. It was clear that his mother and father would only believe what they wanted to believe.
...
After Neriah filled her stomach with some food; which was the reason they returned in the first place, Rakavi held Neriah’s hands in her own and spoke of how happy she was that the young mother-to-be was finally eating like a pregnant woman.
"You have no idea how much she suffered, Barak." Rakavi said to her son. "She ate nothing, went nowhere, and did nothing. She just remained in the bed chamber you shared like a Lifeless doll. I am so happy to see you eating now."
Barak hearing those words was both glad and pained.
He was pained that she had to suffer herself. That she spent all those months in pain yearning for him.
And at the same time, he was glad because it somehow proved she indeed loved him. Loved hint I the point where she lost herself after losing him.
Call him selfish and insane, but to him hearing these things was a way of confirming her love for him. And he loved her even more because now he knew that all through that time his body was in pain, though far away, she was also in some sort of pain for him.
He hated that she actually had to know such sorrow but was grateful that she loved him to the point of suffering for him.
"So be good to her from now on. Do not make her shed any more tears because if she had stored up all the tears she’d shed since you were gone, it would make a mighty ocean. So be good to her." Bashan said and Barak nodded.
...
After their personal family time, they sat down with Mileka, Botch and Rug who had been acting rather weird according to Mileka.
Neriah could not thank them enough for doing what she could not do by saving her husband and Rakavi and Bashan were no different. They thanked them and promised a hefty reward for the care of their son. An amount that Mileka and Botch were not ashamed to receive. Rather they proudly looked forward to it.
"And kind sir, you were the one administering the major treatments to him. I cannot thank you enough." Neriah says and Rug only nodded and waved to her as a response.
Mileka could not help but think that he was indeed acting weird. Not only did he have a cloak over his head, he had hardly said anything more than a sentence since the king and queen arrived.
"What is your name, old man?" Rakavi suddenly asked and Rug remained silent causing Mileka to panic as not answering could be seen as being rude to royalty. They were already illegal visitors of the land, so was he trying to add disregard of royalty to their crimes?!
"Rug, Your Majesty. It would seem he has caught a bad ailment in this forest that restricts him from talking."
"I see." Rakavi spoke. "So that is the name you go by now, old man."
"Ah, yes." Mileka answers in his stead. Then her brows furrowed as the words Rakavi spoke played again in her head, "Yes?" She could not help but wonder why the Queen’s words almost sounded as though she was familiar with Rug.
And at that moment, Mileka was not the only baffled one. Every other person in the room apart from Rug now stared at Rakavi with a questioning gaze.
"Rug..." Rakavi says with a soft chuckle. "At least it sounds better than Ruginuranos."
Mileka and Botch’s eyes widened in shock as they were certain that they were the only ones who knew that bane she just called.
"Y-Y-Your Majesty, you know Rug?!" Botch spoke up even though his wife had warned him beforehand not to say a word because he only ever said the wrong things.
This time at least he said what was on everyone’s mind. Even Bashan’s.
A short laugh escaped the mouth of Rug as his hand pushed down the cloak from his head, revealing his face for all to see.
"Tis been centuries old man. You have wrinkled more than the last time I saw you." Rakavi says.
"Centuries indeed." Rug laughed. "And I thought yah would have a few wrinkles yah self by now at least but yah still look like yah can stroll into a room and snatch the hearts of all the men seated in a single glance."
"What is happening here?!" Bashan was curious as was everyone else who was lost in their conversation.
"Ruginuranos Almodad Methusael... Tis nice to see you old friend."
What exactly was going on?!
