The Dragon Prince's Bride
Chapter 231. Ready to beg.

Chapter 231: 231. Ready to beg.

If there was truth in her words and he was the one who was wrong, if he had truly been the one to not be able to distinguish an imposter from his wife, if truly the child in her did not belong to another but was his, if truly, she was glad to see him alive and well... if— if truly she loved him, then by the gods he was more than ready to go on his knees and beg for her forgiveness.

He would grovel at her feet and beg her for not being able to tell the difference between a shapeshifter and his wife. He would beg for forgiveness for all the harsh words he threw at her when in truth he was the one at fault for falling into the traps of her old lover. He’d beg the child in her for looking at it with much disdain.

He was ready to beg her for forgiveness for calling her love a lie.

But the question remained, how could he trust someone who had lied to him so many damned times? And more importantly, he was very certain she was the one who stabbed him in the heart. Though his certainty was quickly crumbling because of what she had said to him and that dream he had this morning.

"Dear Narcissus help me, I don’t know what to do."

Barak’s cries in the forest were suddenly interrupted by the heavy sound of hoofs coming from a distance. At first he wondered if it was the trick of the evil that crawled in the woods, but he touched himself and found that the pouch Rug had given him was still on him.

Could it be Lyle and his men? Had they finally found a way to follow them into the forest?

He could take them last night because he had been fueled by anger and jealousy but today was different. He wasn’t so sure he could face anyone in the state he was in at the moment. The conflicting thoughts in his head were too much to contain and control.

The fact that Lyle could or could not be the father of the child growing in her was such a tormenting thought that he wasn’t certain he was ready to face the man at the moment.

The sounds of the horses stomping the earth were getting closer and closer, growing louder and louder. He could not head back to the cottage now or else they would easily trail him and find her.

Now he was trying to focus, to listen to the sounds so he could make a rough estimation of how many they were.

Calmly, with his eyes closed, he focused, he listened. Three horses. There were just three horses.

Somewhere in his head, something was whispering to him that Lyle would not risk his neck and come into the forest with men riding on just three horses.

He opened his eyes and he wondered, could it be—

Based on the time Botch left for the capital, it would make sense to assume that he was the one returning.

With no time to ponder any further, Barak leaps high above ground, landing himself on a tall tree. And that leap and landing causes the pains in his body to increase to an almost unbearable level. It was foolish of him to leap so high but he was only realizing that now that he was in pain.

The pain was so much that he could feel himself slowly losing consciousness. He tried his best to stay focused. He was trying to take his mind off the pain that was sizzling through his body.

Closer and closer the sounds of horses hooves beating thee earth was becoming louder and louder and in a matter of moments, the horses were coming into view, on one of them was a huge elven man with long red beard. The person on the second horse, though hooded, he could tell was a woman because of her figure. And the third horse had another huge hooded man mounted upon it.

With hoods over their heads, it was a little hard to see their faces.

But then just when he was starting to fear he could no longer take the pains and was really going to pass out, the hood of the woman was caught on a branch and as the branch pulled her hood backward while her horse trotted forward, long brown hair flowed down the length of her back and he saw her face. And a single word came out of his lips as he finally gave in to the overwhelming pain and shut his eyes, "" Mother,""

Rakavi heard the voice and her head shot up and she saw the person crashing down to the ground, she moved to lift herself from the back of the horse and catch him, but her husband already beat her to it.

From his horse, he leaps and catches the man just before he crashes onto the ground. Rakavi who’d already jumped down from her horse ran until she was kneeling next to her husband. And her fingers trailed the face of the man that her husband held in his hands and the tears that instantly welled up in her eyes were a match with the streams of water that was already pouring down the eyes of her husband.

They had wanted to believe it, they had been frightened to believe it, they had both been so terrified of what they might or might not find, but still they wanted to believe it, so they had left the capital, leaving the palace under the authority of the princess who was the eldest royalty in the palace at the moment and slipped out as quietly as possible so as not to let anyone know where they were going.

Rakima was to hold the palace till they returned. Farhan was to assist her in making sure that no one found out or realized that the king and queen were absent.
