The Dragon Prince's Bride
Chapter 175. I hoped she would disappoint me.

Chapter 175: 175. I hoped she would disappoint me.

The look in his eyes was that of disgust. She had no idea he could make such an expression. He looked at her as though she were covered in all the filth of the world.

"What did you say?" His voice went so much darker that again, Neriah looked around her in search of the door. She could not say exactly why she was feeling so scared, but something just made her uneasy. Maybe it was the eerie atmosphere that the room had, or the man before her, she was not certain. However, she fixated her eyes on the door, calculating the distance between her and the door, keeping it in her head before turning her eyes back to him.

"Lyle," She tried to maintain a calm countenance once more, "I know I am sounding selfish right now. You have done so much for me and I am grateful for the love you gave me. I really am, however, this child," She placed her hand on her belly, trying her best to maintain eye contact with him as she spoke, "deserves its father."

"Neriah—"

"And I do not intend to deprive it of its father, nor do I intend to deprive a father of his very firstborn." Her child was the perfect excuse. And she was using it well. It was clear that just saying she wanted to be with Barak and not Lyle anymore was not enough to end her relationship with the man. But with the help of her unborn child, there was a perfect excuse to stop seeing each other.

"Neriah, have you forgotten? Have you forgotten we were supposed to be together? You were going to carry my children and—"

"But I’m not!" Neriah yelled.

"I am not carrying your child. And I don’t see that ever happening in the nearest or farthest future."

"Neriah—"

"Lyle, I want you to leave. Leave Trago and never come back. Never show your face in Trago again, I beg you." His eyes widened and his hand held on to hers again, but she withdrew her body from him, taking a step back from him and closer to the door.

"Neriah listen to—" He tried to speak again.

"I and my husband will be heading for Fortia tomorrow and I plan to tell him about the child then. By the time we shall return, I do not wish to see even a trace of you here in Trago. Be gone before we return from our trip."

"Neriah_" He tried to hold her hand yet again but she stepped away again and this time she reached the door and her hands held onto the doorknob behind her.

"I hope you can find it in your heart to forgive me someday. And I Do hope you can love someone else and find true happiness, Lyle. This is where we end." With those words, and no reason to stay any longer, Neriah turned the doorknob, opened the door hurriedly and slipped out of it like a rat.

...

Lyle sat on a chair, processing the entire discussion that they had shared. It was minutes after Neriah walked out that the door to the room opened again and a dark cloaked figure entered the room.

"Your Highness?" the man whose face was shrouded by the cloak and the darkness of the room spoke up. Lyle remained silent. The only sound in the room was the tapping of his fingers upon the table, while his eyes remained on the flickering flames of the candle before him.

"Thaddeus," His voice was crisp and slow, completely different from the tone of the sweet lover he had always shown Neriah.

"Yes, My Lord?" The cloaked man answered.

"I foresaw this happening and indeed I was not wrong." He said in a rather calm manner. "Tis a pity. I really hoped she would remain stubborn till the very end. I hoped she would disappoint me by never falling for that man. I hoped she would prove to be different from every other woman who was easily shaken, and she was doing so very well, tsk." He tsked and shook his head as though he had witnessed a scene which he had already seen happen a million times and was not at all moved by it happening again.

"Now she has fallen in love with him. Typical of a woman’s fickle heart. Thaddeus, what is it about women?" He asked but he did not look puzzled at all.

"Why are they so quick to change? Why do they not know what they truly want until it is far too late? One minute they believe they will give their life for someone and the next minute they are already in love with a man they once hated. Incredible creatures, women..." He shrugged and shook his head.

"Indeed, My Lord. I will never understand them." The man named Thaddeus said.

"If only she had remained steadfast in loving me, tsk." He tsked again and again.

"Initially, my plan was simple. Use her to kill that bastard, then make her take the fall for it, after which I was going to kill her and make the blame fall on the Tragonian royal family which would have triggered a fight between Avelah and Trago. The two kingdoms would go to war, destroy each other and give our kingdom a chance to rise to being the greatest Elven kingdom by means which I had strategically planned."

"But?" Thaddeus spoke up again.

"Indeed, there is a but." Lyle laughed. "But seeing how much she loved me and I must confess I lusted after her too. I mean who would not? She has the body of a goddess and again, I must confess I do envy that bastard for being able to see her naked form and have her. So because of her love for me and my lust for her, I was actually thinking of making her my concubine. Do you not think I am gracious, Thaddeus?"

"Indeed, there is none as gracious as you, Your Highness. To think of having such a tainted woman as your concubine is indeed gracious." Thaddeus nodded under the darkness of his cloak.

"You speak nothing but the truth, Thaddeus. I am indeed gracious. I should feed her to the Feubetes as she has been tainted and stained by a man with dirty blood and yet I was going to make her one of my concubines if her love remained steadfast. But, I know and have seen many like her. When Barak dies, she will turn back to me." His countenance was that of a man who was certain of every move he made. It almost seemed as though he could see into the future. And in that future, he could see her coming back to him with no one else to turn to. But by then, his gracious heart would have expired and all that would remain would be his lust, which he would fulfill and then do away with her.

All in good time, he thought to himself with a psychopathic smile.

"How is the operation going?" He lifted his eyes from the candle for the first time since Thaddeus walked into the room.

"Everything is going according to your plan, Your Highness. Soon they will trace the origin of the Feubetes and orcs back to Avelian merchant ship where we have planted the sorcerer whom they will link back to the princess. In the end, everything will fall back to being the doing of the princess." Thaddeus explained and Lyle nodded with a pleased smile upon his face.

"My Lord, forgive me for my impudence but may I ask a question?" Thaddeus asked. Lyle stared at him for a second, then he let out a slow breath and gestured with just a nod of his head, silently telling the man to speak.

Taking a step closer to the table, finally allowing the light from the candle to touch a part of his face, revealing a small scar by the left side of his bottom lip, Thaddeus opened his mouth and spoke, "Why go through all this to bring down both kingdoms. I believe The Niles have the best soldiers, we could easily—"

"Thaddeus," Lyle interrupted the man, stopping him from speaking further.

"Yes, My Lord?"

"You speak as though you have forgotten who you speak with. I am the fallen prince of the Niles!" His eyes went dark, the veins in his head threatened to burst. "The one cast away, to be taken back under one condition and one condition alone!!! And yet you wonder why I have to go through all this? Do you mock me?"

Instantaneously, Thaddeus fell to his knees and pressed his head on the ground, "F_Forgive me, My Lord! I have misspoken. I am too foolish to understand Your Highness’s plight. I beg your forgiveness, My Lord." His voice trembled as he spoke and his head remained pressed on the ground.

Lyle’s eyes remained on the man for long seconds, with a deadpan expression on his face. Then he opened his mouth and he spoke of something else..."To make our plans smoother, I just got informed by the princess herself about a perfect opportunity to end the prince." His fingers began tapping the table again and this time, it took a rather excited rhythm as he remembered the words of the princess.

She was stubborn and yet so foolish. She had created a perfect opportunity for him and she did not even know she had informed him about it.

"Gather the men, we shall be going on a little trip."

"Y_you shall go too?" Thaddeus asked, while still on his knees on the ground.

"Aye, Thaddeus." Lyle smiled. "We are going to Fortia... It is time Barak Der Drache meets his end."
