The Dragon Prince's Bride -
Chapter 170. I will marry you.
Chapter 170: 170. I will marry you.
Barni finished his lesson with his tutor early that afternoon and since he had nothing further to do, he made his way to the garden of Laylas with a book about a certain ancient beast that had gone extinct.
Quietly laid down on a mat that he had set in the center of two beds of Laylas, Barni read his book while nibbling on the raisins he had stacked in his pocket. While in his own peaceful and quiet world, he heard a familiar flutter. At first, he thought it was the leaves but when he heard it again, he was sure. He knew that fluttering sound anywhere. It was one he had come to recognize, one he had missed for a while. He instantly rose to a sitting position, putting his book on the mat, turning his head left, right and all around looking for the source of that fluttering sound.
When he saw nothing, he titled his head to the side, wondering if he really had been hearing things. He shifted his body to lay down again only to bolt back into a sitting position when the sound came again. It was Riri’s wings! He could swear he was right, so this time around he rose to his feet.
Since she was so small and looked like a flower, she would blend in with the surrounding like a chameleon. But he was always able to fish her out of all thee green grass and pretty flowers.
She had not shown her face to him for a while, and he didn’t know why, so why was she showing up now and hiding?
"Riri, Riri is that you?" He called out to her in the most gentle manner a child could call his friend. "Riri, I know you are there, so come out." He said. He really missed the little person. They had become so close that when she suddenly disappeared from his life, he missed her dearly. So why was she hiding? The boy could not understand her.
"Riri, come out now, or I will not tell you about all the flowers and beasts I read about while you were away." He threatened with the only thing he knew he had to offer a fairy but she still did not appear.
"Fine!" Barni yelled in anger and frustration. Tears were starting to sting his eyes as he looked around in search of her but for some reason, he could not find her today.
"You go away without telling me why and I was going to say sorry if I was the one who was bad, but now I know my nanny was right. I was not bad, you are the bad one!!" You will not tell me why you went away and now that you have come, you will not show your face. You are bad Riri and I will no longer play with you!" He yelled at the top of his voice while wiping the tears that streamed down his face. Then he heard the fluttering sound of her wings again and his head turned.
This time he noticed something red poking out from behind a huge leaf. He wiped his tears and moved his feet. His little fingers reached for the leaf and when he pushed it aside, small round green eyes filled with tears were staring back at him.
"Sorry, Barni." Were the first and only words that left her little lips. Her tiny voice reached his ears and the tears streamed down her cheek.
Looking at her crying face, and hearing her trembling voice telling him sorry, little Barni could not resist the adorable charms of the fairy.
"Why did you go? Where have you been? I looked everywhere for you!" Barni bawled his eyes out as he gently reached out his hand to her and she climbed into his palm.
"Riri is sorry." Riri’s cry matched that of the little prince.
"I missed you so much. I wanted to tell you about the rainbow flower that only blooms on the night of full moons in an unknown land called Balestia and it makes fairies the size of people. But you were not there!" Barni cried even harder, his tears were unending.
"Riri missed Barni too... I also wanted to show you the new trick I learnt and I wanted to eat the raisins from your pocket too." Riri was no different.
The two cried and cried their hearts out, telling each other how much they had missed each other and the many things they had learnt while being apart from each other after which they sat back down on the mat and shared Barni’s pocket raisins.
"Riri, you know when you were away, I also read another storybook." Barni spoke again as he placed another raisin in Riri’s tiny hands. "It was called the prince and his bride. In the story, they say there is one way to make sure you will never be apart from someone you like again."
"Really?" Riri asked with curious eyes. "What is the way?"
"It is simple. You marry that friend." Barni shrugged and Riri gasped.
"So since Riri is my friend and I like Riri, and I do not want to be away from Riri again, I will marry Riri." The young prince declared and the little piece of raisin in Riri’s mouth flew out and landed upon Barni’s now flushed cheek.
"What?!" Riri’s tiny voice pierced his ears as her green eyes stared back at him.
"I never used to work hard during physical training before, but now I have begun to work very hard now."
"What does that have to do with marrying Riri?" Riri asked with her small hands upon her chest.
"Well, remember I told you I read about the rainbow flower that turns fairies into human size. Well, it says in the book that the person looking for the flower will have to fight a lot of monsters and beasts. So that is why I will work harder, so I can get the flower, make you bigger and then I will marry you."
Riri’s mouth opened wide as she stared at the young prince. He wasn’t joking, he was being serious! And she had nothing to say...
"Did my little brother just propose to a fairy?" Aria nearly screamed when the voice suddenly sounded from behind her. She had been the one to urge Riri to go and make things up with the little prince. It took a lot of goading and a lot of talking to finally get her to have some courage and move, but only on the condition that Aria went with her.
So Aria stood behind a wooden fence watching the pair. She was just there giggling at the sudden and cute proposal that sounded more like an announcement when that voice sounded behind her. A voice that she had unfortunately come to register in her brain.
She turned around and indeed it was him... Again!
"Y_Your Highness." Aria bowed her head at Prince Raknar.
"Well if it isn’t the purple-eyed maiden again. Is this also a coincidence?" He asked and Aria almost scoffed out loud and the words ’coincidence my foot’ hung at the tip of her tongue.
"If I did not know better, I would say you are following me around?" He leaned in closer to her face and said.
Aria could not believe the man! If anyone was following anyone around then it was him following her! Not the other way round!
It started after that incident with Neriah going to the dungeon. At first Aria thought it was indeed just coincidence but after a while, it did not seem so. First time was the morning of the previous day where he almost scared the life out of her by jumping down from a tree! What sort of prince climbs trees in the first place?! And what did he say after that? "Oh, it is you, the maiden with the purple eyes who was crying for her mistress." And that was it. No sorry for almost giving her a heart attack.
Next was when she was praying alone in a part of the palace that had always been quiet, only to hear someone sneeze, and he rose out of the grass like a corpse coming back to life! And what did he say then? "Ah, we meet again, purple-eyed maiden." again no apology! Well she was a maid and he was a prince, but still!!!
So many coincidental meetings happened between them yesterday but the height of them all was when she went to draw water from the well but then could not find the fetcher and when she looked into the well, she screamed like a mad woman as she saw two fiery eyes looking up at her from within the well.
Just as she was going crazy with fear, the creature with the fiery eyes came out from the well and it turned out to be the new bane of her existence. Prince Raknar... Again!
And what did he say as he stared down at her shaking on the ground, "Oh, it is you again, the purple-eyed maiden."
Today was no different! She had bumped into him over three times just between the break of dawn to the hot afternoon. So calling this a coincidence was definitely stupid! He was definitely stalking her.
But why?
