Chapter 48: The Symbol Of The Sun
Chapter 48: The Symbol Of The Sun
>>Aelin
"The Solwyn tribe?" Draegon had no idea what I was talking about
"You said that it was impossible..." I stared at him in horror
"Yes?" He wasn’t sure what I was referring to when I said that so I further clarified.
"For the book to give me powers-" My breath hitched
"Yes, it’s the book of truth, it only showed you what you already have." He could see the change in my behavior and was finding it odd, "That’s what I was told the book acts as. Since you never learned how to use magic, the book just took out your potential and handed it to you."
I shook my head, "H-how? How could it be?"
"Calm down," He said and I shook my head again
"It doesn’t make any sense!" It really didn’t. I took a step back but almost stumbled. He held my shoulders once again, stabilising me.
"B-but!"
Draegon’s hands were steady as he gently guided me to sit on the edge of the bed, his grip firm yet careful, as if he were handling something delicate. His eyes were locked onto mine, and despite the storm raging within me, his calm presence began to chip away at my panic.
"Breathe," he said, his voice low and soothing. "Just breathe."
I didn’t even realize how shallow my breaths had become until he pointed it out. My chest heaved, and I closed my eyes, forcing myself to match the slow rhythm of his breathing.
"There," he murmured once my breathing steadied, crouching slightly so we were at eye level. His hands rested lightly on my shoulders, "Now, tell me. Who is this Solwyn tribe?"
I blinked, confused for a moment before realization dawned. "Ah," Of course, he doesn’t have any idea why I panicked out of the blue, "The book... It talked about them," I said hesitantly, my fingers curling against the fabric of my dress. "It said they were a tribe, and the magic I have is... most likely what they possessed."
Draegon straightened, his brows furrowed as he processed my words. "I’ve never heard of the Solwyn tribe," he admitted. "But if the book is as old as it seems, maybe they existed too long ago for anyone to remember."
"That’s exactly what doesn’t make sense!" I snapped, though my frustration wasn’t directed at him. "Why would I have the symbol of the sun on my forehead?"
His lips pressed into a thin line, and for a moment, I thought he wouldn’t have an answer. Then he sighed and said, "I don’t know. But we’ll find out. Maybe the Solwyn tribe had fought against the Abyss before. That would explain why your magic works so effectively against its creatures."
"..." I froze, then I tilted my head, thinking back to the book’s words. "It said the Solwyn people were worshipped as saints because they were the only ones capable of keeping the darkness away." I looked away.
"Darkness?" He asked, "What darkness?"
I shook my head, "Honestly, as far as I’ve read, it didn’t say anything about what kind of darkness." I paused, "Maybe the ’darkness’ it mentioned is what we now call the Abyss."
Draegon nodded slowly, his expression thoughtful. "That would make sense. If the Solwyn tribe really did battle the Abyss, it makes sense why you can do it."
I shook my head at him, "But it doesn’t make any sense why I have this power." I looked at Draegon as if he had answers for me, "People didn’t randomly have it, it was a tribal thing, it came from a parent to the child. I have no connection to the tribe."
"Well, maybe one of your parents does?" He made an assumption and I shook my head
"It still doesn’t add up, if someone from my family had it, I wouldn’t be the only one to have this power. IN GENERATIONS." I gulped. I had studied my ancestry. No one possessed something like this, or even close to this at that.
"Hmmm," He thought about it as he looked down, "It is odd," Then he looked back up at me, "But I see no reason for you to panic." I placed his hand on my knee, slightly making me flinch. And I know he felt that but he didn’t take his hand off.
I gave his hand a glance, then looked at his face.
"How could I not panic?" I asked, "I don’t know anything about this power and why I have it." I looked down, "It-" I frowned, "I don’t know."
His gaze softened as he turned back to me. "If that’s true, Aelin, then doesn’t it mean, you’re a saint too."
His words caught me off guard, and I blinked at him, unsure how to respond. "A saint?"
"You said it yourself, the book stated the solwyn tribe was worshipped as saints."
"..." I didn’t know where to look for a moment, "I... you believe everything I said?" I looked at him with a curious gaze, "I could be lying."
His smile seemed to widen at my words, "I do," His instant reply made my heart skip a beat, "Because I know you have no reason to lie. Neither are you a liar."
I pursed my lips softly in shyness as I looked down, unable to say anything in return to that.
"You have the power to fight the Abyss," he said firmly, making me shyly look at him again, "That makes you a very valuable person." He stood up from the ground
I paused, "The Abyss..." And my power... "I wonder if the demons would appreciate this power if a human has it." I wasn’t saying it to Draegon, it was something I said to myself.
I was asking myself a question but he heard it and I felt his body stiffen for a moment.
I looked up at him and I felt my soul shake with how dark and angry his expressions were
!!!
"D-draegon?" I let out a squeak and his violent purple gaze came down to me.
