The Devil's Son and His Fated Bride -
Chapter 89: Needed to gouge her eyes out.
Chapter 89: Needed to gouge her eyes out.
Returning to the castle, Kai made sure no one saw them in that state. He would have spilled blood if any of his men had sniffed his wife’s arousal scent. Not that he cared to be shirtless around, only for his wife’s comfort and damn, her beautiful legs were exposed.
After washing her in the bathtub, he helped prepare her for training.
"I’ll be watching you and Arkilla today," Kai said as he gently braided Ren’s hair.
"Hmm. Arkilla’s gotten strict lately. Don’t blame her if I fall or get hurt."
Kai narrowed his eyes. "Is she hurting you?"
"What? Why in the world would you assume that?" Ren scoffed. "I just said, ’Don’t blame her.’"
Kai snorted. "Fine. I promise not to blame her. But one bruise on you, and she’s paying for it."
Ren huffed, fuming. Arkilla was doing this for her sake. Everyone in this land moved insanely fast, they were shifters, after all, made of magic itself. If she slacked off or ditched real training, she’d be the one left behind.
On their way to the training hall, Ren spotted Calisa and Orgeve returning from the forest. Both looked like they’d been through war.
"Ah, they’re back," she noted.
Kai followed her gaze. "They look wrecked. Guess the fledgling’s got a wild streak."
Ren chuckled. "Let’s check on Ogain first."
He nodded, and they walked toward the other side of the courtyard. Near the door of the nest’s building, Ren noticed their empty hands.
"Where’s Ogain?" she asked, a ripple of concern bubbling in her stomach.
"There, Luna Reneira," Calisa replied, pointing ahead. "This little beast doesn’t need us to teach him anything. Look at what he hunted as an offering this time."
Ren spun around, and there he was. Her little griffin came soaring toward her, sheer black wings spread wide. In his beak, he carried...
A snake.
He dropped the corpse right at her feet. Ren was so stunned she froze, while Kai calmly crouched and picked up the venomous thing by its tail.
"Wow! He’s way too young to hunt like this. Looks like he loves you so much, he’s already trying to figure out how to make you happy," Kai said, half amused, half impressed.
Ren pressed a hand to her chest, struggling not to scream. First, it was a mouse. Now a snake?! Good gods, what would he bring next? A bear?
She held out her arm, and Ogain perched proudly on her forearm. Hugging him close, she whispered, "You’re learning so fast, aren’t you?"
He blinked up at her with those big, innocent, yet curious blue eyes.
"Yes, you are! But I want you to stop bringing me presents, okay? I love you so much, and I know you love me back. You don’t have to prove it with... dead things."
Ogain lowered his head, clearly demanding a pat. She gave it to him with a laugh. "Good boy."
"It took him just one hour to learn how to fly," Calisa said, clearly still exasperated. "But he made sure to drive us mad by having us chase him everywhere. He is insanely fast like a phantom."
"He’ll be ready to fly with Calisa soon, but I doubt our hawk will catch up with his speed," Org added with a nod.
"Thank you for watching over him," Ren said as she set Ogain down. "I’m taking you to the training hall now. Be a good boy, okay?"
Kai smirked. The way she was talking to that little beast, you’d think she was parenting a human toddler.
They all headed toward the training field when Org turned to Calisa. "Show me what you’ve learned at the Military Academy."
To Ren’s surprise, the hawk accepted the challenge without a single protest. If it had been Rail, he would’ve argued for half an hour and started a fight before even reaching the arena.
Ren giggled, drawing Kai’s attention. His face darkened. "Eyes on me," he said sharply, clearly assuming she was admiring the other overly masculine males around them.
She looked at him, amused. "My eyes are on you. But come on, they’re funny. Did you see how Rail was looking at Calisa?"
Kai’s expression eased a little. "Did you hear about the mess he caused? For the first time in my life, I had to send an apology letter to a clan. The Loyal One Clan, actually. He nearly ruined a thousand-year peace treaty."
Ren blinked. She hadn’t thought of it that way, but now that he mentioned it... Those sharp, flaming words Rail had hurled at the Thinker should’ve been a clue. He offended a royal noble bird shifter. That explained a lot.
Kai gave her hand a gentle squeeze and led her toward the training hall, just as Coran approached with a slight urgency as he often did after being unable to solve an issue on his own.
"Your Grace!" he called, bowing respectfully.
Ren couldn’t help but wonder why Coran always moved like a statue. The man was a mystery, and it only made her more curious. When she first arrived, everyone had approached her, eager to introduce themselves, but he, the one constantly at her husband’s side, kept a careful, deliberate distance.
"Coran!" he called. "Did you check on the human girl?"
"Yes, Your Highness," he replied, his tone as flat as ever. Then he added with a sigh, "I hate to bring this up again, but... you have a meeting."
Kai tilted his head. That wasn’t on the schedule.
His eyes narrowed slightly as Coran’s voice linked directly to his mind: The human girl was a spy. She was the bride of the Vampire Lord.
Kai’s jaw clenched, the muscle ticking in his cheek, but he kept his expression calm as he didn’t want Ren to catch on. She’d risked her life, unknowingly, because of a traitor. A fucking spy. And worse, he hadn’t caught it in time. That was on him.
"My dear," he said, voice smooth despite the storm building behind his eyes, "I won’t be able to watch your training today. But I promise, I’ll be by your side tonight."
Ren smiled. Tonight, they’d assess the soldiers’ skills. She needed to find the perfect weapon to counter the vampires with poison, so they could organize the army’s formation, buy precious time during battle... and kill more vampires.
"I’ll see you tonight," she said softly.
Ren stepped into the training hall and waved a hand at Arkilla. The shifter approached, biting her lower lip as she leaned in close.
"How was your little adventure, my Luna?" she whispered with a smirk.
Ren flushed, her body going stiff. "Arkilla, we really should sever this blood bond."
Arkilla folded her arms, clearly unimpressed. "There’s no way I’m doing that."
Before Ren could respond, a sharp voice cut through the air.
"Oh, look, it’s the lame Luna and her crippled shifter!"
Fuck.
Elaika. Wasn’t she supposed to be gone? What the hell was she still doing here?
She strutted toward them, eyes gleaming with cruelty. Her glare landed on Arkilla. "Get lost, cripple. I have a few words for this human."
Arkilla’s fingers curled into a tight fist, ready to beat the venom out of her, but Ren caught her arm.
"You’ll go," Ren said quietly.
Reluctantly, Arkilla obeyed, stepping back a few paces. The hall had gone silent. All eyes were on them. Some of the female warriors frowned, clearly disapproving of Elaika’s behavior. The elders may have stepped away from this feud, but she hadn’t.
Elaika peeked at Ogain who was in mid-air, flapping his wings. Hatred and anger colored the female’s face even more. Ogain was glaring back at her as though ready to gouge her eyes out.
