The Devil's Son and His Fated Bride -
Chapter 82: Dungeons
Chapter 82: Dungeons
~Back to Present
The next morning, Kai woke early and summoned Gloria to deliver breakfast to their chambers and leave them alone. For the first time in ages since they got married, he planned to dine privately with his wife.
Ren watched intently as he sliced a piece of sausage and guided it gently to her lips. Her eyes narrowed slightly.
"Are you sure?" she asked skeptically.
Kai shrugged, an amused glint in his eyes. "About feeding you?"
Ren sighed softly but accepted his offering. After chewing thoughtfully, she reached out, taking hold of his hand. "Are you sure about your feelings?"
Kai pursed his lips, his gaze teasing yet sincere. "Do you want to reject me?"
Ren shook her head vigorously. "No!"
"Yes, wife, I’m certain of my feelings. This isn’t like ordinary things that confuse demons."
Warmth cascaded down Ren’s spine, and to soothe her sudden flush, she hastily grabbed the glass of orange juice and drained it in one gulp.
"Easy, love! You’ll choke."
Concern softened Kai’s features, surprising Ren even further. Embarrassed, she set the glass down, her cheeks flushed as memories of his tender words and passionate touches from last night rushed back to her. They were all real! Really genuine! It had been both unnerving and irresistibly sweet.
Yet her heart clenched at the thought of him being unable to feel the same pleasure. Determined to help him overcome that barrier, she was thinking about a way to break that curse. She lowered her gaze, evading his intoxicating eyes, so she wouldn’t be aroused to trouble him again.
"Eyes on me, wife." His voice rasped, strained with unease, as he caught her looking away.
"Ah, I’m eating!" Ren flashed him a sheepish smile, though her fork merely toyed with the food on her plate.
Kai rose silently, approached her side, and knelt beside her chair. "Look at me."
Ren squeezed her eyes shut briefly, then turned toward him. "You’re unbelievable." She whispered.
"Oh, am I?" Kai chuckled wickedly.
She nodded, her heartbeat accelerating as she took him in. Last night, his face had been flushed with lust and raw need; now he wore a mask of perfect composure as if none of it had happened.
"Listen," Kai spoke softly, shifting gears with effortless ease, "we’re testing silver on the vampire today. It may be torturous, are you sure you want to be present?"
Oh, he was indeed adept at changing both subjects and moods. But he reminded her of the reality they were to face—the vampires, the attacks—especially Luther. Studying a living vampire firsthand might be their key to victory.
"I’ll be fine," she said firmly. "Better to face it now than to become overwhelmed later."
Kai stood up and extended his hand toward her, impatient yet playful. "Stop playing with the damn carrots, you are making me jealous of carrots in your mouth, fuck!" He sighed, "Let’s go."
Ren set the fork aside and jumped up, eagerly slipping her hand into his.
"And never take your eyes off me again," he added, his tone suddenly grave.
"That’s difficult. You’re so..."
She paused, her throat tightening. She couldn’t tell him how beautiful he was—not when the truth that she might seduce him irked her heart.
"I’m yours," Kai finished quietly, as though reading her mind, "yours alone."
His reassurance filled her with warmth and made her feel safer—at least for now. But doubt lingered heavily in her stomach, how long could he truly keep that promise? He had told her about Shadow, about its dark deeds, yet revealed nothing about himself.
"You are," she whispered, forcing a smile.
Kai smoothly shifted their conversation again. "The servants mentioned you hosted a tea party with the Elders’ females. How was it?"
Together, they stepped from their chambers into the corridor, where Arkilla waited expectantly. Ren offered her a polite smile—then froze. Why was Arkilla wearing that filthy, knowing smirk again? Had she sensed every intimate moment last night, both pleasure and pain? Gods, that was mortifying! Gross!
Ren cleared her throat sharply, tearing her eyes away from Arkilla’s penetrating gaze. "It went well. They just wanted to get to know me, and I made it easier for them." She was glad Siamon didn’t spit a word.
Arkilla fought to suppress her laughter. Her Luna Queen had shyly claimed that they were in love, but clearly, it was His Highness who had fallen deeply for Reneira. Arkilla would have openly called him foolish if he’d dared deny his feelings. They looked undeniably perfect together.
"I’m sure you handled them well," Kai said gently, "but did they mention anything that disturbed you?"
Ren chuckled softly, shaking her head. "I don’t intend to let anyone disturb me anymore."
Kai’s lips curled into a pleased smile. She’d grown so much more confident since the day he’d brought her here, nothing like the frightened ’doe-eye’ girl he’d first encountered. He adored her newfound boldness.
"Oh," Ren remembered suddenly, "how are Dave and the other girl?" She glanced over her shoulder at Arkilla, who trailed slowly behind.
"Gloria didn’t inform you?"
"Gloria has barely spoken since I returned from the Garden."
Arkilla drew nearer, matching Ren’s pace, her voice subdued. "She was terrified, as was I."
Kai shot a harsh glare at Arkilla. "I left her safety in your hands!" His voice cut sharply through the air.
"I accept my punishment," Arkilla responded without hesitation. "I apologize for my failure." Arkilla steeled herself, ready for the inevitable sentence.
"Three days in the dungeons," Kai declared coldly, "for both you and Rail. No food, no water."
Ren stopped abruptly, horror flickering in her eyes. "No! Arkilla and Rail didn’t do anything wrong! I lied and dragged them into the Garden; we had to save that human girl!"
Kai snorted, unimpressed. His wife was still too forgiving. "Then they should have prevented you from entering, and certainly stopped you from crossing that Shadow Portal!"
Ren clutched his arm tightly, eyes wide with worry. "Forgive them, please."
Kai shook his head slowly, exasperation mixing with reluctant fondness as he ran a frustrated hand through his hair. Those pleading blue eyes, filled with concern and tenderness, pushed him to the edge of his resolve.
"Fine," he relented grudgingly, "but just this once. If they fail again, I’ll sever their hands."
Ren swallowed nervously but retorted firmly, "No, you won’t!"
Kai opened his mouth to explain how precious she was—not just to him but to all of them—but at that very moment, Coran appeared at the far end of the corridor. His face was slick with sweat, and his voice trembled with urgency.
"Your Highness, you must hurry and see this!"
They followed Coran swiftly down into the dungeons, toward the cell where the vampire was imprisoned. Darkness swallowed the narrow tunnels, heavy with a stench that made Ren’s stomach churn, the torch’s light couldn’t help to burn out that darkness, and if it wasn’t for her husband’s help, she would have fallen many times.
They halted before a sinister-looking cell, sealed securely behind a thick stone wall and an iron door sturdy enough to keep even the strongest vampire contained unless someone aided from outside. From within, anguished screams echoed sharply against the walls, mingled with chaotic shouts.
"Be careful, Agara! It’s shedding skin... disgusting!" Rail’s urgent warning came from inside.
Kai arched a brow at the unexpected revelation.
"Siamon, have you ever seen this before?" Agara’s voice trembled with apprehension from inside.
"Open the door!" Kai commanded sharply.
Coran cast an anxious glance toward Luna Ren. "Your Highness, are you sure she can withstand seeing this?"
Ren stepped forward resolutely, her voice was utterly unwavering. "I can handle it. Please, let us see what’s happening."
