Chapter 60: A Gift for His Dainty Wife: Ogain, The Fledgling Griffin

"Where are we going, Your Highness?" Ren asked as she found herself at the far end of the castle’s stone wall. A bulky guard was already stationed by a small iron door.

"If I tell you, it won’t be a surprise anymore."

Ren looked over her shoulder. Arkilla just shrugged, pretending not to have any clue where they were going, but it was obvious she knew.

"Open the door!" Kai commanded. The guard obeyed, unlocking the door that led into the forest.

Ren’s excitement bubbled up. He had mentioned once before that he would give her a marriage gift. Could it be that they had to enter the forest to find it?

The path was clear, illuminated by fireflies drifting through the air like tiny lanterns. She admired their beauty but hated the thought of their brief existence. These creatures mated, laid eggs, and then died—a cycle that felt almost like a curse. Perhaps it was the same for humans. To give birth and perish soon after. A heavy sorrow gripped her chest at the thought of her mother. She had brought Reneira into the world only to die without the chance to hold or kiss her.

The rolling dirt road led to a breathtaking spring. Luminous water shimmered beneath the fireflies light and some glowing white water lilies floated gently on the surface.

"Oh, gods," she whispered. "This place is incredible."

Beyond the spring, a stony pathway led to a vast cavern, its entrance veiled by cascading wisteria flowers.

"Wow. What is this place?"

"Your magic training field."

Her breath hitched. This was too much.

Kai stepped onto the stony trail, while Arkilla carefully gathered the hem of Ren’s dress to prevent it from trailing underfoot or sending her tumbling into the water.

"Are we going inside that cave?"

Her pupils dilated, the excitement in her eyes sparkling like stars. Even if she had tried to dwell on her struggles among the nobility, she couldn’t. The sheer beauty of this place wrapped around her like a dream, momentarily rescuing her from all other thoughts.

This was a piece of heaven hidden within Thegara.

"Yes, wife."

"This is incredible!"

Kai squeezed her hand, troubled by the thought of leaving her after midnight. He didn’t know what awaited him in Ice Land, but he was certain Lutherieth wouldn’t sit idly by. The vampire king might even kill him this time to claim Reneira for himself.

As they neared the cavern’s entrance, Kai swept aside the curtain of flowers and released her hand.

"After you."

Ren narrowed her eyes at him. She knew he wouldn’t harm her, yet her heart pounded. The air around her carried an unshakable thrill.

"Alright," she said, stepping inside. The moment she did, tears filled her eyes.

Agara stood before her, in the middle of the enormous cavern that its end wasn’t visible. He was holding a fledgling Griffin with raven-black feathers. The little creature’s eyes glowed a striking blue, piercing through the dimness.

"His eyes are just like yours," He breathed near her ear, his lips brushing on the shell of her ear, giving her a shudder.

Ren covered her mouth. She had wished for having this creature the moment she saw the Griffin’s image in that fae book—and now her wish had come true. He made it... He made this dream come true. Dropping her hands, she spun around, gazing at her husband with sheer wonder. She was so tempted to throw her arms around him.

"He?" she asked, her voice trembling with emotion.

Kai nodded, his breezy smile melting her on the spot.

"Yes," he said. "Go ahead. Give him a name and become his foster."

"Come on, Princess! Do you have any idea how many times he’s pecked me?" Agara grumbled.

Ren grabbed Kai’s hand, ignoring Agara for the moment.

"Thank you so much. I don’t even know how to—" Her words jumbled in her excitement. Unable to stop herself, she rose on her toes and pressed a kiss to his lips.

Arkilla turned away, blushing furiously.

"Gods above, rescue me!" Agara groaned.

Kai welcomed her kiss. If she thought this was enough to repay him, she was completely mistaken. Because as soon as he returned from his mission, he intended to claim every inch of her with his mouth.

He pulled back, his forehead resting against hers, his palms cupping her face.

"Go get your fledgling. Raise him well and guide him."

Ren bobbed her head, her cheeks flushed. She was flustered by her own boldness, but what he had given her was worth everything. Gods, he had just gifted her a fledgling Griffin!

Spinning around, she lifted her skirts carefully and stepped onto the slick stone floor of the cave. Agara moved closer, his robes stained with blood.

"My bad, you were serious about the pecking," she remarked.

She extended her arms eagerly, unable to contain her overwhelming joy. She was gasping with happiness, and the moment those soft, silken feathers brushed against her skin, she sobbed. Like a mother reunited with her lost child after a cruel and unforgiving time apart.

The fledgling Griffin nestled its head into her embrace. Agara raised a brow.

"This little demon! Look how quickly he accepted her," he muttered.

Kai stepped to her left, placing his palm on her shoulder, while Arkilla took her right side, looking equally stunned.

"You brought him from the Fae realm, didn’t you? Isn’t that forbidden to separate it from his mother, Master Agara?" Arkilla asked.

Ren was too enthralled with her new companion to look up. She didn’t want to take her eyes off him.

"Why is it forbidden?" she asked.

"Because humans are greedy. But you—you are an exception," Agara admitted. "Kai made a deal with my father."

Ren’s head snapped toward Kai.

"A deal?" she scowled.

"Yes. He said that if you tamed the fledgling that lost his mother a week ago and raised it properly, he would allow you to visit the Fae realm. But if you failed, I would have to take the Griffin back." Kai nodded toward the fledgling. "I suppose he’s already lost. You’ve won the right to visit his realm. And this little thing found a new mother."

Agara snorted. "You must take care of him. He can sense your magic. He knows you are a Tamer—that’s why he’s so calm. Train him well before he matures. Once he bonds with you, there’s no turning back. Now, name him."

The fledgling blinked up at her with big, shimmering blue eyes.

"I must find a good name," she murmured. "He is as black as a sky with no stars but then, his eyes are as deep as the ocean and glowing like stars. What does ’ocean’ mean in the Fae language?"

"That would be Ogaineth, meaning ’the great ocean.’ You can call him Ogain."

Ren nodded. "Alright, little one. I name you Ogaineth, but I’ll call you Ogain. You’ll be as stormy as the sea to your enemies and as peaceful as the ocean breeze to your friends because you are the great mirror that reflects a sky full of stars."

She kissed Ogain’s head. He nuzzled her arm with his tiny, sharp beak.

"It seems he likes it," Kai observed, pleased.

"Well, I suppose Vivia is going to be jealous," Arkilla teased, folding her arms.

Ren laughed. "Well, I admit that. Vivia is quite jealous."
