The Devil's Son and His Fated Bride
Chapter 56: I’m with you

Chapter 56: I’m with you

Kai found Ren trembling, on the verge of fainting, and panic gripped him. Was it the kiss? Had he had Shadow harm her somehow, unintentionally? He was so consumed by the kiss that he didn’t realize it. His distress flared hot and wild, rousing the demon within him.

’It wasn’t me,’ Shadow snarled with his deep rough voice in his mind. ’She is ashamed. I can smell it, you jerk!’

Kai’s eyes widened. Shame? His hold on Ren tightened instinctively as he rubbed soothing circles along her back. "Calm down, wife," he murmured, his voice thick with concern. "It’s alright. This is normal for couples. That asshole—" He huffed in frustration. "Agara was being a damn ass."

"He saw us!" Ren’s voice quivered with mortification.

Kai pulled back just enough to cup her arms, his touch grounding. Her face was aflame, scarlet with embarrassment.

"Should I go snap his neck?"

"No," She frowned, "You can’t kill someone because he spot us kissing! I’m just ashamed."

"Gods, you are my wife, doe-eye. You shouldn’t be ashamed. We did nothing wrong." His tone was firm, yet laced with warmth. "Now, listen. We have a feast to attend, and I need you to exude the same confidence you wielded against Elaika. Can you promise me this?"

Ren’s eyes locked onto his gaze, and his golden eyes worked their magic, steady, unwavering, painted with quiet command. She exhaled sharply, forcing composure into her limbs.

"I can do this," she whispered, planting her resolve in the fact that her husband was divine and maddeningly irresistible. Heat curled under her skin, melting the last of the chill and gripping her spine.

Kai let out a heavy breath. "You scared me."

"I’m sorry," she whispered, voice barely audible. "It... it was my first time being kissed."

A slow smirk stretched across his lips. "I’m honored to be your first."

She smacked his arm, cheeks burning. "Don’t tease me."

"I’m not," he said, laughter in his voice. "I’m sincerely glad."

Sighing, he ran a hand through his hair before intertwining their fingers again, leading her forward. But as he squeezed her hand, his frown deepened. She was ice-cold again.

His mind reached out. ’Shadow, why is her hand freezing?’

For a moment, there was silence. Then, Shadow’s voice slithered through his thoughts, thick with mischief. ’You want something from me so odd of you? Then give me something in exchange.’

Kai scowled. ’You ridiculous demon. What do you want?’

Shadow chuckled darkly. ’More kisses. Or... I’ll take her myself. She’s willing. She is pure, delicious.’

Kai’s muscles coiled with restrained fury. This reckless bastard knew exactly how to rile him.

’Fuck off and go to hell. I’ll ask her myself. And if you think I’ll ever let you possess her for your twisted cravings, you’re dead wrong. I will never let you ruin her. Not even through me.’

He severed the link, shutting Shadow out.

Turning to Reneira, his voice softened. "Princess, I have a question for you."

She gave him a sheepish smile, her lips still swollen from his demanding kiss. "Sure. Maybe answering you will distract me from this misery."

Gods help him. He wanted to kiss her again. All the time. But he had to restrain himself, and Shadow.

"Your hands are cold," he murmured, slowing his steps. "Like I’m holding snow."

Ren exhaled a ragged breath. "Arkilla was scared too. But don’t worry. It’s an internal battle. My magic is fighting my urge to break free. I’ve been like this for four months now."

Kai’s brows were knitted together. This wasn’t good. She hadn’t learned to control her power, only how to suppress it. How had she even managed? It had taken him three centuries to contain Shadow. And yet this human woman... His little wife was doing it.

"Agara will start your training soon," he said, voice resolute. "And after midnight, we leave to bring you a vampire."

Ren’s expression darkened with unease. "Is it urgent to leave tonight?"

He nodded. "Lutherieth is unpredictable. If I don’t move fast, he will wreak havoc."

She grimaced. Even with the little she knew, she couldn’t understand Luther’s obsession.

"What does he want?" she asked.

Kai squeezed her hand, his jaw tightening. "I don’t know."

’Liar,’ Shadow sneered. ’He wants her. And that beloved King Benkin of yours? He’s lying too. He knows.’

Shadow slithered through the smallest fracture in his resolve, but Kai refused to let Ren know. He wouldn’t let Lutherieth lay a single hand on her. If the bastard even dared, he’d die at Kai’s hands. He would never let him stain her purity.

They stepped into the enormous celebration grounds, and Ren’s stomach untangled from its knots. Thousands of fireflies shimmered, and moths danced around countless flickering candles. The sight was enchanting.

More than two hundred tents were scattered across the area, offering food and drink, and places to reside. At the heart of it all stood the grand tent, their destination, where the elders and their families waited to see the King’s Bride.

As they passed the gathering crowd, whispers followed them.

"She’s like an angel."

"Have you seen an angel"

"She pisses like us, so no angel."

"Thank the gods he didn’t take that ugly wolf."

"She’s human, but there’s an air of the Fae around her."

Ren tensed. Some had no idea she was a witch. She had once feared such rumors would spread beyond Thegara, but Gloria said that the law was clear: castle secrets remained within its walls. Anyone who dared to betray that would face only one fate—death. She said during the past ten years, she has watched ten public executions of those who spread words. So the lesson was already taught.

And now, the moment had come. They stood before the grand tent.

Ren inhaled sharply, exhaling to steady her nerves. Her heart thundered in her chest, rebellious and frantic.

’You can do this, Reneira.’

Then, deep and steady, his voice rumbled through their bond, Her heart jolted with the sound of her name coming from him.

’Always remember this, I am everywhere you are. Through our bond, through the mark on your neck, I am bound to you. And I am loyal to you.’

Heat rushed through her chest, igniting something fierce and unshakable. He had just set her heart ablaze. At that genuine moment, she knew, with every fiber of her being, that she was no longer alone.
