Chapter 54: A sister

After finishing her tasks, Ren returned to her chambers to wash and prepare for the feast. As she searched for a dress, she pursed her lips in thought.

"I didn’t see Elaika at the training field. I suppose I got used to her throwing tantrums at me," she mused. Was she with her husband las night? That was him early in the morning but Gloria didn’t see anyone so she didn’t push it to let them know he wasn’t there last night, and she slept alone.

Gloria, standing nearby, shuddered at the mention of Elaika. "Honestly, I’m glad we didn’t see her. This time, she wouldn’t just try to break your heart; she’d make sure to humiliate Arkilla too, just because she’s a wolfless Omega. That woman is a bully through and through."

Ren let out a sigh. "Never mind her. I also haven’t seen His Highness or Master Agara today. I hope they’re doing well."

"Oh! You’re right. I haven’t seen them either!" Gloria exclaimed before picking up a dark green velvet dress. "Please wear this one. His Highness bought it for you. He’ll be happy to see you in it."

Ren sighed before nodding. "Alright, I’ll wear it. But I have one condition."

Gloria raised an eyebrow. "A condition? For me?" She pointed at herself in confusion.

Ren bobbed her head, a sweet smile playing on her lips as she held up a dark blue silk dress. "You’re going to wear this. I bought it in Zillgaira with the coins I earned. Do you like it?"

Gloria’s cheeks flushed with embarrassment and gratitude. The dress was exquisite, just like the woman offering it. Oh gods, Her heart yearned to accept, but...

"I appreciate the gesture, milady, but this dress must be costly, and I don’t deserve it."

Ren frowned. She despised how Gloria always lowered herself.

"I’m not giving this to you as a favor," she corrected, "but as a gift—a token of friendship. I don’t see you as just my handmaiden, Gloria. I see you as a friend. And if you don’t accept it, I won’t wear my dress either. So, choose wisely."

Gloria was flustered. Her lady was sweetly stubborn and smart to trap her. If it had been Elaika, she would have made sure Gloria wore nothing but tattered rags. But this... this was kindness. Tears filled her eyes but she pushed them back.

"Alright," Gloria relented, her voice light with amusement. "Since I sincerely want you to wear this majestic dress that complements your strength and aura, I will accept your gift; as a friend."

Her formality made Ren laugh.

"You are truly a gift to me, Gloria," Ren expressed warmly, handing over the dress. Gloria carefully placed it on the cushion before helping Ren get dressed. And just a few moments later, Ren was in her dress.

As Gloria stepped back to admire her, her heart swelled with joy. "I knew it. You look queenly."

Ren glanced down at her long skirt as she took a step forward. "This train is going to be troublesome."

"I’ll be close to you. I won’t let anything happen!" A warm voice assured her.

Arkilla appeared in the doorway, wearing her formal black guardian attire. A smile stretched across her face as she took in Ren’s appearance. "Oh, gods... I don’t even have words for this."

Ren turned, folding her arms. "Orgeve is attending the feast, and he’s promised to eat like a beast tonight, Killa! And you are not going to appear like you’re marching into battle!" she scolded.

Arkilla clicked her tongue. "Tsk. I just praised you, and this is how you repay me?"

Ren shrugged. "You kicked my ass in training today. Consider this my revenge."

Arkilla let out a laugh, leaning off the doorframe. "Even your vengeance is elegant, Your Highness."

Ren shook her head. "Tonight, you are my sister. Got it?"

Arkilla bowed with a smirk. "If it’s an order, I accept to be your sister."

Ren smiled and gestured to a crimson dress. "Then come here and take your punishment. This dress will fit you perfectly, loose and long."

Arkilla narrowed her eyes. "Are you saying I’m fat?"

Ren shook her head, suppressing a laugh.

"I’m not wearing that. Choose another punishment. That is so fucking hot."

Gloria giggled, knowing Ren wouldn’t back down.

"Are you two scheming against me?" Arkilla eyed them suspiciously.

Ren grinned. "No scheming. No other punishment. Just this one. Wear the dress, or I will dress you myself."

Arkilla let out an exasperated sigh. "Fine!"

"That’s more like it."

Ren sat at her vanity, pulling open a drawer. "Lora used to insist that I add some blush to my cheeks because I’m so pale. But she never knew that I made cosmetics in the alchemy lab and sold them," she chuckled, reminiscing about those days when she had scrimped and saved every coin, desperate to escape Zillgaira and reach her uncle.

"And when I told her, she was absolutely shocked and forced me to use them."

Gloria, intrigued, peeked over. "We don’t have things like that in Thegara. The females here don’t bother to make themselves beautiful for their husbands."

"Hey, I’m right here," Arkilla protested as she struggled to fasten the buttons of her dress. "Besides, have you not seen those wretched Serpent females? They die to attract attention."

"Oh, except them," Gloria conceded.

Ren placed the cosmetic box on the table and turned to Arkilla. "Come here before you dislocate your arm."

She patiently fastened the buttons, ensuring Arkilla was comfortable.

"This is the second time King Benkin has saved us from collapse," Arkilla suddenly declared.

Ren paused. "What do you mean?"

Arkilla exhaled. "He gave us you. If Elaika had become Luna, I would have left Thegara to live as an ordinary person."

Ren’s heart jolted. She had never been admired like this before. Through their blood bond, she could feel Arkilla’s sincerity. In the human realms, she had been invisible, save for Lora. But here, Rail, Gloria, Arkilla, Siamon, and others—they treated her as if she truly belonged. As if they didn’t care that she... she was a witch.

She snapped back to reality, realizing they were all watching her.

"Did I make you sad? I’m sorry," Arkilla said, suddenly worried. "I know you didn’t want this, but this land needs someone like you. We may have changed over time, but you haven’t seen the worst of it yet. These people will do anything to get what they want—and they will be ruthless if you stand in their way."

Arkilla’s unease about the feast was palpable.

Ren nodded slowly. "I understand. But I’m not sad anymore. I have to learn how to live here, and you are the only ones who can help me." She tilted her head with a playful smirk.

"And in return, I will teach you how to burn your enemies to the ground by fueling their jealousy. Now, sit down, girls!"
