Chapter 50: Wolf-less Omega
Chapter 50: Wolf-less Omega
’Milady, I’m coming to help soon. Sorry, I saw Orgeve near the infirmary and went to check on him.’
Arkilla’s voice in her head dragged Ren out of the unrest that had consumed her utter being. She wiped away her tears and forced her knees to steady beneath her.
"I’m an idiot. I shouldn’t have done that. I forced myself on him."
She cursed under her breath, walking toward the table. Her palm rested on her chest, her breathing uneven and cold. She needed a distraction before she lost herself completely.
And yet, despite his cold and cruel behavior, she wasn’t reluctant to give him a gift. On the contrary, and annoyingly so, she wanted to give him everything. That kiss could barely be defined as one, yet something had sparked in her heart. A seed had been planted, and in that mere second, it had begun to bloom. She couldn’t stop it. With every passing moment, she let it take root, let it consume her, gradually. Because she wanted this love. Something to hold onto. A reason to survive. And that reason was him, his love. Something that belonged to her and her alone. How she knew it, that was the mystery she could not unravel.
’Take your time, Killa. I’m fine.’ Ren replied, doing her best to sustain a steady voice in her head so she wouldn’t find out.
In truth, Ren needed this time alone. Ever since arriving in Moon Valley, she had barely had a moment to herself. She had grown used to always being near her husband or others. Now, she needed space, needed to pull herself together.
After half an hour, Arkilla entered the lab, her face set, expression unreadable. Ren didn’t know that through their blood bond, Arkilla could feel her sadness and pain which allowed her to sense danger. And, gods, it was best Ren didn’t know, because if she did, she would have broken the bond without hesitation.
Ren looked up at her, forcing a smile. "How is Orgeve?"
"As you said, his right arm is struggling. He entered a fight and lost to his opponent. He had never lost a battle before."
She moved closer, tilting her head as she studied Ren. "Your cheeks are like rose petals."
Ren stiffened at the observation. Was it that obvious? She cleared her throat. "I’m just exhausted. Help me finish this and stop being chatty."
Arkilla shrugged and grabbed a cloth. "I’ll sift this."
The sandalwood extract needed filtering, so she took over the task. But seeing Ren like this gnawed at her. She wanted to lift her spirits.
"I heard you asked Gloria about my wolf’s color!"
Ren smirked. "I was curious, but she said I had to ask you. I don’t know where she is, by the way."
"Ah, Gloria, her thighs ached, so I sent her home, and about that question, I’m a Wolfless Omega."
Her voice carried a tinge of sorrow, something plain and agonizing. When Ren met her gaze, she saw it, the weight of unspoken words, the wounds left behind by judgment and scorn, the scars of being seen as incomplete.
Ren put down the alcohol bottle. This process would take longer since she intended to make perfume as well. Turning to Arkilla, she grabbed her hands.
"Fuck them!"
The curse shattered the intensity of the moment, and their laughter rang through the lab.
"I can’t believe you just said that," Arkilla said between chuckles.
Ren nodded, clutching her belly. She hadn’t expected to say it either, but it was exactly what those fools deserved for treating Arkilla as anything less than the remarkable woman she was. Stunning, disciplined, and strong. And her devotion? No words could capture it.
Catching their breath, they looked at each other. "I heard you’re perfect in swordplay and archery. Gloria said you once hunted them a forest chicken and celebrated your birthday with Rail, Orgeve, and her."
Arkilla nodded. "When we turn nine, we can shift. But things didn’t work that way for me."
"I can’t believe a nine-year-old could hunt! That’s incredible. You are incredible."
Arkilla bowed slightly. "I appreciate the compliment. Would you like me to teach you archery alongside fighting?"
Ren’s face lit up. "Of course, I would! That’s a practical skill."
They returned to their work as Ren sighed. "This will take so much time, and tomorrow there is a feast."
"We can resume after the feast."
Ren’s thoughts drifted to her husband. He had mentioned leaving to bring her vampire. Which meant he would be gone soon. How long would he be away?
"Killa, why does His Highness’s brother hate him?"
She had never met this man, Luther, yet it seemed he and Kaisun had been at war for years. There had to be a grave reason behind it. She felt sad for those caught in the crossfire. Luther had burned an entire village in the Ice Lands. Another had simply vanished, but now she suspected what had happened to them. The bastard had turned them into vampires.
"Their mothers were different, and Luther hated that their father always favored his youngest son over him, the eldest. That’s all I know about His Majesty. We know his father is as powerful as the gods, but we don’t know who he is. And no one dares to dig deeper. What we do know is that all shifters are said to be descendants of his father, which makes His Majesty our rightful King."
"How valid is this information?"
Arkilla shrugged. "I don’t know. But you read books, haven’t you found anything?"
Ren shook her head. "I want to know him better, but he doesn’t seem eager to speak about it."
Arkilla smirked, stealing a glance at her. She knew this sharp-minded human had already begun her own investigation. Now, she was curious too.
"Count on me if you want to investigate secretly. If we want to rid ourselves of that lunatic vampire King, we need to dig into the past, whether it’s hideous or not. I don’t want to see our people slaughtered because Luther has a grudge against us."
Ren studied her face, searching for any hint of doubt. There was none.
"Hmm, I see you like Gamma Orgeve," Ren teased, her voice laced with mischief. "Are you worried about him?"
Arkilla’s cheeks turned crimson, her brows furrowing. "Oh, my lady, you certainly know how to ruin a serious conversation."
Ren burst into laughter, and soon, Arkilla joined her, the tension in the room dissolving into warmth.
