The Devil's Son and His Fated Bride -
Chapter 22: Healing
Chapter 22: Healing
Seeing the look on her face, Agara turned around and glared at Rigo. "Have you not explained to her how it works?"
Rigo gave him a sheepish grin. "I didn’t get the chance."
Agara sighed painstakingly. He was well aware of humans’ prejudices regarding magic, stemming from rebellions that had caused chaos centuries ago.
Ren sat in the chair, as it was incredibly uncomfortable to stand in that position and hurt Gloria.
"What is it? Is my condition that bad, so it requires you to use magic on my legs?"
Agara let out a frustrated sigh and pinched the bridge of his nose, slightly shaking his head. Humans know nothing about magic and how to use it to their advantage or to benefit from its good aspects.
Her terrified face said it all.
"If you want to walk within a few minutes, yes, it is necessary to use magic and heal you. And considering what I’ve heard about your rivals, I suggest you do it while danger still lurks around you."
Ren swallowed, but doubts still shadowed her thoughts. "What if my magic reacts to yours and hurts you?"
The Fae smiled gently in her response, pleased to know she wasn’t wicked.
Magic in the wrong hands could be a disaster, but in the right ones, it could be a miracle.
"Listen carefully, Princess Reneira. I will assess the color of your magic. If it’s a proper one, I’ll allow you to thrive and use it. But if it’s dark magic, I’ll extract it from your body and block the core. Deal?"
Agara’s words hit Ren like a thunderclap. Magic had color? Could he ruin the core of her magic, or would that threaten her life?
"Are you sure light magic wouldn’t harm anyone?"
"I am. I carry one."
Ren glanced at Gloria, who seemed happy to hear that.
"Are you ready?" Agara asked.
"You’re not doing it without me, are you?"
The door opened, and her husband stood there. Kai’s face was expressionless, and his tone was far from delighted.
"Of course, I was going to do it without you."
Ren felt the air thicken, her stomach twisting. She thought they were on good terms, but before she could think any further, Kai smiled and strode forward, hugging his cousin.
"Welcome, my brother."
His expression was as soft as the morning she woke from that deep, dark dream. They released each other, and Kai looked back at Gloria.
"You can stay outside. Don’t let anyone in. Got it?"
Gloria nodded and sprinted outside to guard the door. As she did, Rail stood on guard, arching his brow.
"They sent you out? Now no one’s going to tell me what happened there. Pity."
Gloria blushed but shrugged it off. "Milady will tell me." She smirked joyfully.
Back in the room, Agara looked at Kai. "It will itch, so don’t interrupt me if she asks for something in your mind!" He cautioned. Kai just snorted.
Ren narrowed her eyes. What did he just say? She asks for something in his mind. Is that magic, or what? She didn’t want to do that—and let him know her thoughts. It would be embarrassing if she unintentionally disclosed something she didn’t want to! Her face burned hot.
She felt sweat trickling down her back.
Kai smirked and kneeled next to her, taking her hand. "Don’t panic!"
Kai seemed entertained, wearing that smirk, his scrutinizing gaze locking with hers as though trying to force her to do exactly what she shouldn’t.
Would he hear me say, I hate his cocky temper?
And then he shot her a flaring glare straight into her eyes.
Ren’s mouth dropped at his reaction. Did he hear it? How? And how long had this been happening?
"Alright, lovebirds! Let me start." Agara’s deep voice cracked the chilling air, making them focus.
Kai reached out and grabbed her hand. Why was she always this cold?
Ren felt her heart flutter. It didn’t matter how many times he held her hand; it always sent a pleasant warmth through her body that she didn’t want to let go of.
Agara brought his hands up, closing his eyes, drawing a formation she didn’t identify what it was. Soon, a white circle of light appeared. It gleamed and was warm, surrounding her legs entirely, so she couldn’t see them. He held his left palm out above the circle and kept his right hand down to his side, forefinger, and middle fingers were straight out next to each other.
A teasing itch started to form on her skin, making her squeeze Kai’s hand.
It’s ridiculously ticklish and itchy at the same time.
She thought, and at that very moment, shock coursed through her entire body, overwhelming her to the bone when she heard his voice in her head... and the moment of revelation kicked in only to catch her even more off guard toward him.
’Bear it, Doe-eye, it’s worth it.’
Ren’s eyes darted to him, all kinds of emotions swirling inside her: fear, amazement, anger, and most significantly, insecurity.
Has she had any privacy ever since she married this man?
Evil! The smirk on his face was evil, and how he was staring at her for so long was ruthless, heartless, wicked! How could he not tell her?
As she was distracted by her husband, Agara brought his palm down, and the shining circle faded.
"Except for your heartbeat, everything else is alright? Are you two having a secret debate we can’t hear?" He snapped coldly.
Rigo gave him a bothered smile. He didn’t know how His Majesty’s cousin dared to speak like that. He was courageous.
That exclamation broke the long, awkward silence between the couple. Ren tried to breathe, but her chest tightened. This wasn’t a fable, a fairytale, or a bedtime story. It was real—a skill that was now implemented in her through her bond with her husband. True? She guessed. She did her best to subdue her anger and feign the face of a calm person.
"Okay, rely on me and stand up!" Kai suggested, offering help. Ren gritted her teeth, trying to keep up the good-couple appearance. It was getting tougher with every passing day. He was pretending to be in love with her while he wasn’t.
Holding his arm out for her and standing up, he smiled at her reaction.
She felt energy coursing back into her legs. She smiled and deeply appreciated Agara’s help. "I can feel them," she said.
Kai took a step forward, challenging her. She laughed cheerfully, let go of his arm, and took a deep breath, walking a few careful steps.
"That’s good, it worked," Rigo muttered, making Agara frown.
"Of course it did. That’s my power. It never falters," Agara said, sounding like a boastful peacock.
"Thank you!" Ren said sincerely, unable to contain her gratitude as she bent her legs.
"Perfect, now that my wife can walk, we must head to the cave to assess her magic color!" Kai announced. His voice was serious enough to make her smile shatter.
What would her husband do if the color of her magic was dark?
