The Devil's Son and His Fated Bride
Chapter 190: Aiding humans.

Chapter 190: Aiding humans.

In the dragon field, they heard Sunkiath roaring overhead, locked in a powerful aerial dance with the King.

Sensing a surge of magic from the ground, the dragon dove, wings slicing through the air like two great swords. But the King spotted Kai standing beside the wizard and raised a hand to calm his beast.

"Don’t burn it."

Sunkiath’s voice growled inside his mind, thick with fury. "He carries the witch’s blood. The one who murdered your wife."

The King’s jaw tightened, his expression darkening, but he said nothing.

As he touched down, Sunkiath followed, folding his massive wings as he lowered his neck. The dragon’s maw came so close to Sigaros that the young wizard could smell the heat of smoke and the heavy stench of fury.

But Sigaros didn’t flinch. He stood solid, unmoving as a statue carved by will alone.

"I come for peace. And aid," he declared firmly.

Sunkiath recoiled slightly, a thick cloud of smoke curling from his nostrils. He couldn’t sense fear in the boy, and that hesitation made him pause, if only for a breath.

Still, Sigaros was a magician. A threat by nature. If that staff even shimmered with magic, the dragon would burn him where he stood.

The King didn’t turn to face the wizard. He stood still, his eyes fixed on Kai, waiting for him to speak.

Kai answered the silent call and gave him what he had come for. "This young wizard claims to be Sigaros Meira, a high sorcerer seeking peace between magicians and humans. And... he says Nimoieth is trying to return."

The King tilted his head slightly. That was no small claim, it was a declaration that could fracture kingdoms.

"And what proof do you have of this?" he asked, his voice low but charged.

Sigaros stepped forward, his voice unwavering. "Chancellor Oka has been conspiring with Victor Keleemont, the man one of your own saved. I discovered they’ve been deceiving everyone, believing Nimoieth will let them rule the humans. And Lutherieth... he seeks your daughter. Not for love, but as a vessel. He intends to use her to bring Nimoieth back. She has the body he wants."

Kai’s thoughts screeched to a halt. His mind reeled. A host body for Nimoieth? That outcast witch... she had been telling the truth. Kai’s concerns elevated.

The King’s tone sharpened. "I asked what proof you have."

Without hesitation, the wizard reached into his cloak and drew out a crystal orb. It shimmered with a faint, bluish pulse as it floated above his palm. "You trust this, don’t you? A Fae Gara Orb."

Kai’s eyes locked on the artifact then gave a sharp nod. "Show us."

The magician brushed his hand above the orb, and the mist within the translucent glass stirred. Slowly, it swirled into motion, forming scenes within its glowing depths.

Lutherieth appeared first, standing before a gathering of wizards, his voice smooth and persuasive. He promised them peace, but beneath his words slithered darker truths. Nimoieth had a plan, a vision of dominion. She would bring them to the Arc of Power, a throne forged for magicians and vampires, where humans would be reduced to nothing more than feeders.

The mist shifted again, revealing another vision, Chancellor Oka and his lover entwined and then he was conversing with Sigaros. Then, the image settled on their conversation: Sigaros and Oka, locked in a quiet confrontation. Their voices, preserved in the orb’s memory, echoed clearly in the silent field.

The King’s expression remained unreadable, his face as hard and unyielding as the jagged black rocks underfoot.

"You told him to kill my daughter," King Benkin said coldly. His voice was low, but every syllable struck like a blade.

"Give me one reason not to kill you now. Though truthfully, I may do it anyway."

Sigaros stood his ground. "That’s exactly why I came. I needed him to act. It was the only way to force his hand, to make him commit a crime within these walls and be exposed. Lutherieth never told us who she was. He never said she was meant to be the vessel to bring back the Witch Saint. He was secretly plotting with Phoria."

He took a breath, steadying himself before his final revelation. "And more than that. I’ve studied the old era. I am the last living descendant of King Colien. The king who tamed the sea monsters."

"Nimoieth deceived him," Sigaros said, his voice painted with quiet haste. "She taught our ancestors magic, only to let their empires collapse. It was all part of her design, to seize control of the sea beasts and enslave us all. I don’t want chaos. I want peace. But I can’t do it alone. We may wield magic, but we’re still human. I want to cure people not kill them. There were many ways to harm and kill but fewer ways to save people. And with vampires in power, peace will never see the light of day again."

When he finished, King Benkin exchanged a look with Kaisun.

"What do you think?" the King asked. "Would he dare try to kill my daughter?"

Kai didn’t trust the wizard. Not yet. But if Sigaros were a liar or a fraud, Shadow, his ever-watchful companion, would have known by now.

"You understand," the King said, "if you return to the Witch Island, they’ll kill you."

"I know," Sigaros replied without hesitation. "And I’m not going back. I’ll fight alongside you in this war. I’m an alchemy wizard. Just promise me, make Castle Stone safe again."

The King stepped closer, his eyes narrowing. "Your mother killed my wife. How did you escape punishment?"

Sigaros didn’t flinch. "She didn’t want to do it. She rose against Phoria and her greed, but she lost. They took me as hostage. They bound her with spells, and forced her to carry out the murder. If my mother had been like the others, she would’ve cursed your throne in vengeance before her death. But she didn’t."

Among witches, it was common to curse their enemies in death, but that young woman had never uttered a single word of spite. And that silence was its own kind of truth.

"She could have told us the truth!" Kai protested.

Sigaros shook his head. "She couldn’t. Phoria’s magic is too strong, she can bend minds to her will. And she wanted to save me."

Kai and the King turned away, walking a short distance to speak in private, weighing what they had seen and heard.

"I cannot allow magicians to enter Alvonia and play tricks, casting spells as they please," King Benkinh muttered, his voice a mix of frustration and caution.

"He never said they wanted to come to Alvonia," Kai replied calmly. "I can’t tell you to trust him, but he gave us more than enough reason to execute Oka. Isn’t that what you’ve been waiting for?"

The King said nothing, but his silence was telling.

After some deliberation, they returned to the wizard. The King’s voice was measured, but firm. "Tell us everything you know about Daniella De-Alvone."

Sigaros gave a solemn nod. "Chancellor Oka found her first. Then he sent Victor to deceive her people, he turned them all. But it seems you managed to save that cunning girl."

That last word snagged Kai’s attention like a thorn.

"Cunning?" he echoed, brows furrowed.

Sigaros nodded. "Yes. She’s a good liar, no, a perfect one. The first time I saw her, I couldn’t believe she was lying. She wore honesty like a second skin. The girl wanted the Spike to kill the King of Alvonia and claim the throne for herself. And Lutherieth... he wanted the Spike to destroy your mortal body. But before that, he planned to eliminate Azrael."

He paused, voice lowering. "Daniella realized they were using her. That’s why she turned on them. She’s after revenge now. As for Victor, he likes her. Otherwise, he would’ve killed her without hesitation. He saw Prince Agaraith and believed the prince would protect her."

Kai’s stomach turned. The deeper they dug, the more twisted this plot became. Everyone had their own agenda, and in each one, someone he loved was marked for death.

Seriously?

Ren, gentle, smiling Ren, had been ready to kill her own father. How did it come to this?

"You know all the Lords, don’t you?" Kai asked, his voice tight.

Sigaros nodded. "All but one. The giant vampire. I’ve never learned his name. Phoria gives him potions to stop him from going berserk."

Kai smirked, folding his arms. "Let’s start with something simple, give us the names you do know. And if you want me to even think about trusting you, use that clever little brain of yours to drag Lutherieth to the banquet."

He was testing the wizard, carefully. Kai already knew his brother was at the banquet, hidden in plain sight, cloaked in the illusion of a royal guest. And Daniella? She’d never once mentioned meeting any sorcerers. Clever girl, only offering fragments of truth while keeping the rest buried.

Sigaros’s expression darkened. "He’s already here. That’s why I took my chance to come. His Lords are preparing to strike. Renar will change the weather soon. When the clouds he summons reach this sky... they’ll descend. All of them. You’re running out of time."

The King’s eyes narrowed. "How long do we have?"

"A few months," Sigaros replied. "If you want to win this war, you must strike first, hit them in the north before they gather strength."

Kai looked at him blankly. He wasn’t going to follow the wizard’s lead. His own forces, his generals, were already in place, prepared to crush the human armies, pirates, bandits, and goblins when he gave the signal.

"Why?" he asked. "Why are you helping us?"

Sigaros’s gaze sharpened. "Tell me, do you know how Nimoieth’s soul survived?"

"A thousand magicians sacrificed themselves," Kai said flatly.

The young wizard let out a bitter chuckle. "Do you really believe a thousand people gave their lives willingly for someone who enslaved them with a Blood Leash? They had no idea what was happening. Their bones are buried beneath that sanctuary, forgotten, used."

"So you’re helping us because you don’t want to die for her?" Kai pressed.

Sigaros nodded. "I want freedom. And the High Table’s laws will never give me that."

The King let out a dry laugh. "Freedom? A magician can’t have freedom, unless I rewrite the law."

"I know," Sigaros said. "That’s why I came. I’ll fight beside you. But I will never be a slave again. Kill me if you want. But I don’t give my soul to Nimoieth."
