Chapter 188: Rude bit*ch

~Mass Release ended.

The guard’s blood sprayed across the floor and the Chancellor’s face as he continued, relentless in his fury.

Finally, he stopped, breathing heavily, his voice as cold as the air around a corpse. "Come in."

He barked at the guard by the door. "Take this useless rat and throw him into the ocean. And bring Princess Araben to the garden."

Aunt Even was immersed in preparations for the banquet when Rebedina entered the gallery, flanked by a group of noblewomen. Aunt Even scoffed under her breath. Some things never changed, Rebedina, always dragging a small army behind her like a mama duck with her brood in tow.

"Princess Eve! Are you going to design everything without consulting me?"

Aunt Eve offered a polite smile, the kind that oozed courtesy, but inside, her fury simmered like an inferno ready to explode. This woman’s daughter had dared to sever Helene’s hand, and worse, burn countless people, innocent or otherwise. Araben had no right to decide who lived or died. And as for Rebedina, she was the worst kind of mother, the kind whose poisonous influence would shape her child into something far darker.

"Dear Rebedina, it’s my responsibility to handle the castle’s affairs. I trust you remember, the Queen’s seat has remained vacant since the death of the Queen Mother."

Rebedina’s lips curled into a slight, almost imperceptible smile, but it was tinged with resentment, a flicker of malice that never quite left her face.

"Oh, my darling! I was simply suggesting some assistance, seeing as you’ve grown a bit... older, and perhaps weary of carrying such heavy burdens."

Aunt Eve selected a color from the array of silks in the servant’s hands and sent him on his way with a dismissive gesture. As she turned fully to face the group of noblewomen, her gaze landed on Chancellor Oka’s wife, the irritating smirk that never seemed to fade from her lips.

"Gods, I’m younger than Lady Solin!" Aunt Eve snapped, her tone sharp. "And I’m not tired, perfectly healthy, as you can see."

Lady Solin, who had been enjoying the exchange with a smirk, rolled her eyes, taking the jab straight to her pride.

Rebedina didn’t waste a moment defending her uncle’s wife. With a shallow bow of her head, she simply said, "As you wish, Princess. We’re heading to the garden for an evening meal. Please, join us if you tire."

With a swift turn, Rebedina left, walking with such arrogance that it felt as though she were already a Queen.

"Fancy bitch!" Aunt Eve muttered, the words grinding through her teeth. She straightened her shoulders, shaking off the fury, and headed toward the kitchen to meet the chefs, her composure snapping back into place.

After finalizing the list of food and drinks, Aunt Eve was about to leave to check on her girls after they met with the dragon when a figure suddenly appeared in the dark corner of the corridor. She flinched, caught off guard by the abruptness, but a smile crossed her face when she saw Lora.

"Oh, dear, what are you doing here?" Aunt Eve kept her voice low, wary of being overheard.

"Please, come to the storage room, Your Grace," Lora whispered urgently.

Aunt Eve glanced around, ensuring no one was watching, then nodded. She followed Lora into the storage room, where the door was quickly closed behind them.

"We don’t have much time," Lora said, urgency shaking in her tone. "The princess asked me to prepare a pot of tea for her."

"Alright," Aunt Eve replied, her eyes narrowing. "Are you all ready?"

Lora nodded but her expression darkened. "We are... but something happened today. Josa received a letter. It revealed her parents and sister were slaughtered by Princess Araben."

A sharp sting of shock pierced Aunt Eve’s heart. The poor girl! She could hardly fathom the cruelty that had befallen her.

"Is she alright?" Aunt Eve asked, her voice laced with panic.

Lora shook her head. "I don’t think so. But fortunately, that kind Fae Prince appeared out of nowhere, and we let him into our room. He questioned us, and we told him everything. He healed her a bit, but I’m still worried."

Aunt Eve felt helpless. There was nothing she could do. Josa couldn’t find out that Helene was still alive, not now, not yet.

"Take care of her," Aunt Eve warned her voice tight with concern. "She may want revenge."

Lora’s face mirrored her unease. The girl’s calmness was unsettling, too composed for someone in her position.

"What did you do with the letter?"

"I burned it."

"Good. Now go back to Princess Araben and keep an eye on her. Watch her every move. Don’t make any mistakes, you’re close to leaving her side."

Lora bowed respectfully before turning to leave, but then paused, her eyes narrowing. "She had a private visit with Chancellor Oka. I found it odd, especially since they didn’t let me join their walk in the garden."

"I’ll look into that. Go!"

Lora slowly opened the door, glanced around cautiously, and then slipped out.

Aunt Eve stood still for a moment, her thoughts racing. What would Oka want with her? Were they planning something, another catastrophe?

As she was about to leave, she heard a guard muttering curses under his breath, clearly directed at the chancellor. The man was pushing a cart toward the back door, the one that led to the sewer. She couldn’t make out what was in the cart, but when her eyes fell to the floor, her stomach lurched.

Blood.

Her hand flew to her mouth in shock.

As she spun around, her face collided with a firm chest. Fear gripped her heart.

She pulled back quickly, her eyes meeting the figure before her. A breath of relief escaped her lips.

Kaisun.

He placed a finger to his lips, silently signaling toward the corridor the guard had just passed through. Aunt Eve nodded, the weight of the situation made her breath go away.

They moved quietly, following the guard’s path, the tension that coated the air was thick with a stench of blood.

They followed the guard and suddenly Kai moved like a flash of smoke and hit the man from the back, and he fell unconscious. Aunt Eve quickly pulled a piece of the sheet away and her stomach scorched with disgust. This poor guard had no face to be recognized.
