The Devil's Son and His Fated Bride -
Chapter 150: A wooden spiky stick made of Life Tree.
Chapter 150: A wooden spiky stick made of Life Tree.
Daniella bowed her head, her pleading gaze sliding toward Ren. This Queen had already done more than she deserved, it was her turn to bear the cost of her past.
Ren wrestled with herself, torn between instinct and reason. She wanted to say no. But in the end, she gave in.
Yet the thought of leaving Daniella alone with Victor? That, she couldn’t allow it.
"Go ahead. I’ll let you try it," Ren permitted, though she never said she’d let the girl face him alone.
"Thank you, My Queen."
Daniella pointed to the mahogany table. "A spiked stick made of wood... made from the Tree of Life, they say."
They were still in their places.
"The stick was in Deagara’s Throne hall, hovering in the air. It’s heavily guarded, and vampires swarm around it. Victor called it a holy relic. They revered it. But on our way out of that frozen castle, I saw something, a carving etched into a stone slate fallen in the messy courtyard. A note was beneath it. The snow had just been brushed away by the wind, so Victor didn’t realize I saw it. Maybe he didn’t know it was there."
She paused, noticing how intently they were listening now.
"I always wondered why they kept that sacred stick near the throne instead of hiding it. Then I got my answer. One of the human kings used it to stab a Vampire Lord through the heart. The note said, ’May the Tree of Life wipe the filth from our soil.’ That’s when I realized Victor had lied to me. But I... I was foolish enough to ignore it."
She finished with her head bowed, still kneeling.
"So you’re telling me," the King said, his voice tinged with disbelief, "that a simple wooden spike can kill a Vampire Lord? Just like that?"
Nonetheless, Ren stood and picked up the quill. She wrote a word on a piece of parchment, then turned it to Daniella. "Read this."
Kai leaned back, watching her with a faint smirk. He knew his wife too well. Whenever she wore that cryptic look, her mind was spinning again, layered, brilliant, dangerous. He always admired it. Hell, it was maddeningly attractive.
"Tree," the girl answered without hesitation.
Ren walked to her aunt and held out the paper. "Can you read this, Aunt?"
Eve squinted at the word, brows pulling tight. "No... Is that Fae?"
Ren nodded. "An old tongue. The Fae used it to speak with griffins and dragons. Later, they taught them the new languages, the ones we use now."
Aunt Eve gawked, stunned. How could Ren know that? She had only been in Thegara for two months, and yet... This kind of transformation was unfathomable.
"Now the real question," Ren turned back to Daniella, her voice razor-sharp, "is how you can read such an ancient tongue."
The King’s hand shifted to the hilt of his sword on the table. His fingers wrapped around it slowly, a silent threat. If this girl was a spy, he wouldn’t hesitate.
"My grandmother taught me," Daniella answered. "She was once a Maiden, and she learned it from her mother. They say one of my ancestors was a Fae’s maiden, more than three centuries ago. Her name was Anarya. She left behind a book of Fables, written in that language. The book is still in our house."
The King’s hand relaxed, slowly loosening around the sword’s hilt.
"Girl, what is the name of your village?"
The King’s voice cracked slightly, barely containing the weight of his sorrow.
"Oak Village. We were known as the folk of the Silver Lake," she replied, eyes distant. "My mother used to say the Fae troops, on their way to fight the witches, often came to our lands, and my ancestors served them. We lived there for thousands of years, weathering cold and storms. Nothing ever broke us... until those fangs. They erased us, because of me."
Ren felt a storm rise inside her. It wasn’t a pity. It wasn’t just sorrow or anger either. It was everything at once, and she didn’t know how to breathe through it. But one truth shone clearly: saving this girl had been the right choice.
"They can’t even go near the stick," Daniella continued. "The air around it is warm. Not a shred of cold lingers near it."
Kai narrowed his eyes, his tone sharp with suspicion. "Did he ever ask you to touch it?"
"No, he never let me touch it," Daniella said, her voice trembling slightly. "He always stayed far away from it. Got angry when I tried to approach. It was like I was the only one who could get close in that circle."
Kai exhaled sharply, the weight of her words settling in. This means the spike is truly a holy weapon. No demon, no vampire could touch it. Even something like that could kill him.
"A sacred weapon?!" The King’s voice was low, filled with incredulity.
Ren froze, her heart hammering in her chest. The realization hit her like a jolt of ice water.
What?
Fear crawled beneath her skin. Her eyes instinctively flicked to Kai, seeking reassurance. But then her mind whirled. He had said there was no such thing as a sacred weapon. Azrael, that sly future High Saint, how could he not know about something like this?
As soon as they left that office, and stepped into that room, Ren turned around and grabbed Kai’s hand, "Promise me that you would not even get close to that thing!"
Kai snorted, "I said that I won’t risk anything in that weapon."
"Gods! Please summon your brother here. We need to discuss it with him." She begged desperately.
Kai shook his head and rejected her demand, "No! I don’t get the reason for your concern!"
His tone was annoyingly casual.
"You have to trust me. If Lutherieth is keeping that immortal weapon so dear like a treasure, it means he is about to use it. It is for killing you."
Ren recalled the ice shard in the hands of Lutherieth’s mother. That wasn’t a nightmare. It was a sign, indicating a holy weapon.
