The Devil's Son and His Fated Bride
Chapter 15: He cares about you

Chapter 15: He cares about you

"When does she wake up, Master?" Gloria asked the healer, holding Ren’s hand. Worry etched her face.

"The poison is gone. Now, it all depends on her stamina. She was lucky that Your Majesty broke that bracelet in time." The healer explained.

Ren could hear their conversation as awareness seeped into her clouded mind. She could no longer sense the heavy and burning weight of the bracelet on her wrist. How had her husband removed it?

It was the second time since their marriage that he had saved her life. She felt her heartbeat quicken. Why did she strangely crave so much to see him, to feel his warmth surrounding her?

Her fingers twitched slightly, and her eyelashes fluttered. Her mouth was dry, and her throat felt itchy. She squeezed her eyes shut and groaned.

"Oh, look, Master Healer! She is waking up," Gloria’s voice was excited.

Ren could hear other voices, the raindrops jingling on the balcony, knocking on the window. She opened her eyes slowly; they burned and ached. The chandelier above her had all its candles alight which irritated her sight.

"Milady, milady, are you okay?" Ren found a blurry figure scurrying around her like a panicked bird. Oh gods, why were voices louder than usual?

She didn’t remember much about how she had ended up bedridden, but the last thing she recalled was not only the crawling shadows chasing her in a dark maze made of thorns but also female wolves who intended to shred her to pieces.

Her palm rested on her forehead as a killer headache assaulted her, followed by a storm of memories.

"Bring His Majesty here, Gloria! Hurry up!" The healer ordered merrily.

The maiden nodded and immediately flashed out of the bedroom. Rigo, on the other side, grabbed a jar of water from the table and filled a wooden mug, helping Ren sit upright and drink.

"Take some water. You’ve lost so much blood these days. The headache will go away soon."

He smiled in satisfaction as she sipped the water. "The fever is gone. You are stronger than we anticipated, Milady!"

"Who are you?" she asked meekly.

"I’m Rigo, your healer."

Ren steadied herself but faltered and the healer grabbed her hand when the door simultaneously snapped open with a bang.

Kai was standing there, his frown deepening as he saw Rigo so close to his wife. The healer instantly grasped His Majesty’s point and stepped away. He didn’t like anybody touching his human wife, but this was just a subtle assistance to enable her to sit comfortably.

Kai walked into the room gracefully. His palm reached out to rest on her forehead, and then that stern expression transformed into an oh-so-majestic smile. Ren could feel her heart crashing against her chest even harder. People say if looks could kill, they’d be in the grave now. But in her case, she must say if smiles could kill, she was set on fire by now.

"You scared us, Doe-eye! Should I punish you for this?"

Ren gave him a gentle smile. "I’m sorry for troubling you constantly," she smiled, trailing off, "but I doubt you would kill me after saving me twice." She adjusted her back and added, "I owe you a lot, Your Highness."

Kai cocked his head, musing. "I wonder how you would repay me. Your debt is getting costly."

Behind him, Gloria giggled, unable to contain herself.

"Gloria, take care of your lady. I want her to attend the dining hall tonight."

Gloria bowed deeply. "I’m at your disposal. Rest assured, she will look amazing."

Turning around, Kai stepped close to the healer. "You come with me." His ton reversed to a certain amount, hoarse and dry. Was he mad at him? Rigo gave Ren a mid-bow and left after the Alpha King.

Gloria approached Ren and held her hand. "Milady, do you need anything that I can help you with?"

Ren shook her head. "I can’t feel my limbs yet!" She pouted at the sight of her heavy and numb legs, as though a dark force restrained her body from reacting.

"Please, don’t worry! The healer gave you a potion while you were unconscious. You will soon walk."

Ren frowned. "Am I lame?"

Gloria gave her a sheepish smile. "Of course not! This is temporary. Look at that chair. His Majesty made that for you. I’ll help you walk again, just don’t rush yourself."

Ren let out a deep sigh but when her eyes caught sight of the wooden wheelchair she smiled. He was very considerate which was not good for her heart. Digging through her memories as though something was amiss, she absentmindedly asked, "Did Elaika do something to us?" She brought her left hand up to brush her hair away only to see the bracelet was gone.

"How?" Her mouth fell open. Her husband didn’t seem keen on removing it, but he truly did it. She wasn’t dreaming.

"Oh, that cursed thing on your wrist is gone. Thankfully, your Majesty found a solution to break it. He didn’t sleep for three nights to make the Saw and crack it."

Ren’s mouth dropped onto her palms. What? She thought he didn’t trust her and was afraid to let her magic thrive.

"He cares about you a lot!" Gloria giggled again. But that was so sweet of her. She didn’t know what was going on beneath the surface of their relationship.

"I’m grateful!" she said, putting on the act her husband had asked her to. Pretending to be a happy wife.

"But wait! What about Elaika? What did he do to her?"

Gloria shrugged, she couldn’t care less about that crazy bitch, "His Majesty gave her options, and she chose the better one. She helped him forge the Saw to save you, so he spared her life. She spent two nights in the dungeons after that."

Dungeons? Even after helping him, he had sent her to the dungeons. Her husband was unpredictable, indeed.

Ren closed her eyes, thinking about the Saw. She had studied magic blockers extensively ever since she felt the core of magic within her. It was tormenting to possess such a cursed power she didn’t want to hold. But every time she sought to rid herself of it, she hit a closed door. The ways she came across to block it always threatened her life. Only once had an alchemist, who trained her to make elixirs, indicated a sacred Fae magical tool capable of breaking such bracelets. A tool that carried magic far stronger than the bracelet’s magic.

How had these shifters come to possess such a strong tool? She kept the question to herself. Gloria certainly wasn’t aware of Kaisun’s secret or the details of the bracelet.

Kai stepped closer, his presence looming over her. "Elaika, you have one chance to redeem yourself. Use your brain and help me forge something out of this hammer to destroy the bracelet, or you’ll face the consequences of your actions. You dared to steal from my forge."

"I swear, I didn’t steal it. I just wanted to know what it was." Elaika’s confidence wavered as the weight of his words sank in. The fire in his eyes promised no mercy, and for the first time, she realized the depth of his resolve. Her breath quickened as she struggled to find an answer that would save her.

"Think, Elaika!"

The courtyard fell silent, the tension so thick it seemed to hold the world still. In the distance, thunder rumbled, a storm brewing on the horizon. Kai’s patience was slipping, and the air seemed to grow colder with each passing second.

Finally, Elaika spoke, her voice trembling. "I... I’ll do it." She let out a cold breath. "You can forge a Saw out of it! I can help."

Kai’s lips curled into a dangerous smirk. "Good. Let’s hope, for your sake, you’re not lying. Wasting this chance is equal to your death."

Coran jolted his sister in the forge’s direction. "Why are you always disappointing him?" he whispered in her ear.

"I won’t this time." She bowed her head and smirked evilly as they headed toward the forge.
