Chapter 146: A toxic nightmare + An essential small glossary.

~In her dreams:

Ren was laughing, chasing her baby boy across a sun-drenched plain, the air alive with joy. Ogain and Viva raced each other in the distance, Ogain’s screech echoing, scaring chirping birds like music through the sky.

She glanced around, smiling. "Where’s your dad?"

Her son’s golden eyes met hers, gleaming with innocence.

"Daddy? He was never here, Mommy. Are you alright?"

Ren’s heart jumped! What?

The warmth in the air shifted, suddenly and violently. The vibrant colors bled away, swallowed by a sky thick with chaos and smoke.

Alarmed, Ren snatched her son into her arms and sprinted toward Ogain.

"Kaisun!" she screamed his name into the thickening dark.

But instead of him, a swirling cloud of smoke gathered before her, shaping itself into the silhouette of a woman. It solidified, blocking her path. But her features were too blank for her to make out.

"Hello, Reneira."

Ren’s heart slammed in her chest. Her breath hitched. She stepped back, clutching her child tightly.

"Who are you?"

The figure didn’t move, but her presence pressed down like a storm.

Her son whimpered, eyes wide. "Mommy... I’m scared."

Ren hugged him closer, summoning a ball of glowing magic to her palm, ready to strike.

"You know me," the woman said calmly.

And gods... she did. How? A shiver danced down her spine as recognition crawled through her bones.

"Lilliana," she whispered.

Lutherieth’s mother.

How in the hell was she here, among the vengeance shadows?

"You cannot kill my son," the spirit hissed, voice layered with fury, "or I will kill your husband."

Ren’s rage ignited. Her gaze dropped to the weapon in Lilliana’s hand—an ice dagger, jagged and strange, pulsing with ancient power. Her chest tightened.

Without hesitation, Ren hurled the magic at her, and suddenly everything turned into dust, even her child, and she screamed...

Snapped awake. She jolted upright, gasping for breath. The sky above was gray and rolling. Rain drizzled over Jaigara. Her chest rose and fell, wild and urgent.

Cool air kissed her face. It was heaven.

The weather in the Moon Valley of Thegara had always been warm, and thick with sun, but here, it was crisp, cleansing. Delicious.

And after that nightmare, she needed it like a lifeblood. And, a son! That nightmare had its own sweet fleeting moment.

"You’re awake? Had a bad dream?"

Kai’s voice was gentle, the softness of it wrapping around her like a balm to her frayed nerves.

"Yes..." she murmured, still catching her breath. "I guess the shadow pathway affected me."

"No spirit was near," he assured her, brushing a kiss against her forehead. "If one had been, I would’ve sensed it, and burned it to ash."

His touch steadied her, and for a moment, she leaned into his warmth.

"We’ve arrived."

Ren turned to the window. The towering stone walls surrounding the city loomed into view, their dark silhouettes outlined against the gray sky. Far beyond them, on the northern wing of the city, the castle rose like a sleeping beast.

A bell tolled, a deep, echoing sound, and the gates creaked open. The carriages surged forward, wheels clattering faster over the stone.

People halted to watch. All of them heard the news and gaped at the shifters. The beasts!

As they neared the castle gate, guards stood in strict rows, spears at their sides, eyes sharp. Ever watchful for intruders bold enough to slip in during such a moment.

Then, closer to the courtyard, Ren spotted a cluster of courtiers waiting. Her heart stuttered violently.

There, among them, unmistakable as she could say, stood the King. The majestic, ageless King who could lure all women, even the married ones. Just as she remembered him.

He had never welcomed guests like this before. Never. Not once had he stepped into the courtyard to greet anyone.

Why now?

She had missed him. She couldn’t lie to herself about that. But her fury, gods, her fury burned deeper than ever. No reunion could soothe that. And yet here she was finally. To confront fate. To stand before the darkness that had once shattered her.
