Chapter 136: Taking the spy girl to Alvonia.

Ogain soared through the sky, his wings slicing the air with effortless grace. Every time Calisa came close to catching up or attempting to direct him, the griffin twisted mid-air and shot higher, vanishing into the sunlit haze, his sheer black feathers the only thing betraying his presence. For a dragon, that would be easy to catch him but for a hawk, there was no way.

Ren exhaled a long breath of relief. Beside her, Gloria clapped her hands and cheered for Ogain.

Ren glanced at the stern girl standing to her left. Nudging her gently, she offered a warm smile. "Don’t be like that! Look at him, Ogain has a great tutor. Calisa’s the best at the military academy, and still, my griffin’s flying circles around him."

But her words did little to shift Arkilla’s mood. Her gaze was fixed on Org, who stood at a distance, silent and withdrawn.

"You did it because of him," Arkilla muttered, her voice laced with resentment. Not toward Ren but toward herself.

Ren simply shrugged. "I don’t care about him. All I care about is your life."

Gloria slipped her arm around Arkilla’s shoulders. "Sister, this is for the best. She knows what she’s doing. Just think, if someone hurt her, you’d feel the pain too, and you wouldn’t be able to fight with all your strength to protect her. Try to see it that way."

Ren tilted her head, silently agreeing with Gloria’s words.

"Fine," Arkilla finally said, a faint smile tugging at the corner of her lips. She might no longer be bound by blood, but her loyalty to Reneira remain unshaken, she would still give her life for her.

Above them, Ogain soared higher, then dropped into a smooth, daring dive, skillfully evading Calisa’s swift attack.

’Ogain, I’ve seen enough. Come here,’ she linked to him.

’Did you like it?’ Came his quick reply.

’You were fantastic,’ Ren answered, unable to find better words for what her heart felt.

Ogain’s voice had begun to shift, now carrying the inflections of a teenage boy. In just a few months, it would deepen into that of a grown man. His voice would get deep and husky.

"Your Highness!"

Ren turned to find Rail approaching at a brisk pace.

"Oh, Gamma Rail." Her gaze flicked to Gloria, who was now pouting. So, they were still on bad terms. The girl had been beaming with joy only moments ago, but the sight of Rail had clearly soured her mood.

"Your Highness, the Alpha King has requested your presence at the jails," Rail said formally.

Ren gave a quick nod. "I’ll be there shortly. I need to speak with Ogain first."

She strode across the field toward where Ogain had landed, Calisa shifted, walking beside her Griffin.

The young hawk-shifter was still catching his breath. "He keeps hammering me, relentlessly every time. I crashed this round. I swear, I’m going to cough up blood."

"Well done, both of you," Ren said, her smile full of pride. "If it weren’t for your lessons, he wouldn’t have flown like that today."

Calisa flushed at the praise, clearly pleased. "Don’t mention it, my Queen!"

Ogain nudged her side, demanding a cuddle, and Ren gently stroked his head.

"Your horns are coming in... does it hurt?" she asked softly.

’Not when you touch them. Are you pulling the pain away?’ Ogain’s voice was tender in her mind.

Ren smiled, her hand lingering on the spot. "It’s the least I can do, love. Ogain, I’ll be gone for two weeks. It breaks my heart to leave you, even for that long. Eat well, train hard, and when I return, I expect you to be taller than me."

Ogain let out a sharp, disgruntled huff. He hated being left behind.

Ren turned to Orgeve and Calisa, who stood nearby, side by side. "Watch over him for me, please. There are greedy eyes that follow him when we’re not here."

"Do not worry, Your Grace," Org replied with calm certainty. "We’ll keep him safe."

"We should return to the castle," the Luna added, her tone shifting. "There’s a matter I must attend to."

Ren walked alongside Ogain, speaking softly as they strolled. She shared old fables she’d read about griffins, tales full of valor and wisdom. In turn, Ogain told her about the royal dragons that lived deep within the mountain ranges of his homeland.

Griffins ruled over the plains, he said, while dragons claimed the volcanoes and high hot peaks full of sulfuric air. That realm had belonged to them long before the Fae came and their King staked a claim to even a sliver of it.

Ren silently prayed that the Fae King hadn’t slaughtered many to take that land. There was still so much she didn’t know, but one truth echoed in her heart, the Fae were not merciful. If anything, they were ruthlessly calculated.

Her steps slowed as she caught sight of the royal carriages waiting in the courtyard. The vassals were busy loading them with supplies for the journey ahead.

’This is going to be a hard moment,’ she linked to her husband, the weight of it already pressing against her chest.

’What moment exactly, wife?’ Kaisun’s voice echoed in her mind, laced with curiosity and a trace of weariness. Why was he so exhausted?

’Going to Alvonia... and facing the man I once called my uncle. The king who is, in truth, my father.’

’Don’t rush to accept him,’ Kaisun said gently. ’Let time reveal your true feelings, wife.’

Just then, Gloria paused mid-step. "Your Highness, I need to grab a few things. Should I still come with you?"

Ren saw through the excuse instantly. Gloria was trying to avoid being near Rail. Had she truly decided to bury her feelings once and for all?

"Alright, Gloria. Go ahead. And say hi to little Dave for me."

Gloria bowed and hurried off as if something or someone were chasing her.

Ren turned sharply to Rail. "Gamma Rail, talk to her. She’s carrying guilt over Kamin, and she’s hurting. Go to her. Am I clear?"

Rail hesitated, clearly caught off guard. His eyes darted to Org for support.

"You better get going," Orgeve said with a smirk. "Our Luna Queen’s mood is not to be tested today."

Rail had no choice. Sooner or later, he would have to face Gloria and settle what lay heavy between them. Better to do it now than let it fester. She was probably still asking herself why Kamin had thrown himself between her and death.

Ren exhaled, frustrated by how tangled everything had become. Their hearts were splintered in the aftermath, and at the root of it all stood Luther. He had tainted everything he touched.

Orgeve and Calisa took Ogain back to the nest. It was his food time.

Descending into the jails beneath the castle, Ren and Arkilla caught sight of Kaisun standing still, his gaze fixed on the girl being shackled. Coran was securing the chains with deliberate care.

"What is happening?" Ren asked, brows knitting.

"We have to take her with us," Coran replied without looking up. "She’s the only living witness who can testify before the humans that Victor Keleemont is alive... and that he’s become a Lord Vampire."

He gave the shackles one final tug, ensuring the locks were sealed tight.

Kai turned to her, a trace of amusement curling his lips. "My Luna Queen, are you objecting to this decision?"

Ren shook her head. "No. You’re right, we need her testimony."

She stepped closer to the shackled girl. "Daniella, there’s a possibility the human royals may decide your fate. Are you ready for that?"

Daniella raised her chin, her voice steady despite the tremor beneath it. "If there’s even the slimmest chance to see him dead... I will endure it, Milady."

Ren moved to her, gently tucking a loose strand of dark hair behind Daniella’s ear.

"The best revenge," she said softly, "is to begin again. I’ll make sure you have that chance. Vampires manipulate minds, and bend wills, how can anyone be certain you’re truly guilty?"

Daniella’s eyes filled with tears, the weight of truth spilling to the surface. "I’m not cruel. But they are. If they take our world..." Her voice broke. "No... please, don’t let them take our world."

She sank onto the edge of the cot, trembling as Beta Coran secured the final lock and turned away.

"I’ll come for you first thing in the morning," he said over his shoulder, disappearing through the iron-barred door.

As silence wrapped around them like a fog, Ren remained standing there, watching the flicker of torchlight dance across the cold stone walls.

At the dinner table, the elders were arguing again, not about Elaika this time, but over a deeper discord slithering beneath the surface like a viper. Earlier that day, just after the Alpha King had left the training field, two Gammas from the River Wolves pack had clashed with the Mountain Wolves. What began as words quickly escalated into a brutal brawl, fists and claws drawing blood.

Ren glanced between the scowling faces, her jaw tightening.

Kai’s voice cut through the rising voices like an ice shard. "Are you going to tell me what happened, or shall I send Shadow to investigate while you all keep mumbling like cowards?"

His expression was grave, dark, and dangerous. A hush fell over the table. Something was unraveling. And it wouldn’t be long before it tore through everything. Kai was sick of this situation.
