Chapter 97: Expectations and reality
"They broke up because of you. You don’t know?"
Marcus drew a deep breath, looking at Marianne with confusion. He studied her expression and he could tell she was telling the truth.
"Me?" he repeated. "And why would they break up because of me?"
"Because Vincent thinks you’re making moves on her behind his back." Marianne shrugged. "Who knows? Are you?"
Marcus scoffed, walking in the same spot while keeping his eyes on her. "Are you asking me if I am just like you?" his voice was laced with obvious sarcasm. "No, Marianne. I’m not like you who would fuck your best friend’s fiance and smile at her face as if you’re the immaculate friend she could trust."
"Hah!" Marianne scoffed.
"You might’ve been very disappointed, huh?" Marcus continued, not having any reason to be nice to her. She started this. Hence, he would gladly be the jerk she didn’t see coming. "Fil confided in you and you found out that they broke up. Vincent didn’t tell you about it, and it upset you."
"I’m sure you went to him so you can appear as the good wife material as what you think he should see you, but he didn’t want you. So that upsets you more. Now, you came here because?" Marcus cocked his head to the side, looking at her with ridicule. "Don’t tell me you came here because you think this is enough to make me go to him and punch him in the face?"
Marianne maintained a cold and fierce front but didn’t say anything. Meanwhile, Marcus couldn’t help but laugh mockingly.
’Fil didn’t even tell me the details of their break up,’ he told himself, getting angrier at Marianne’s actions. ’It could be because of many reasons, but I’m sure Fil didn’t say anything for a reason. She doesn’t want to cause more problems and drama. Yet Marianne just came and spilled all the tea without being asked.’
This only showed why Marianne wasn’t enough to replace Fil. It only displayed the great character difference between Fil and Marianne.
"You used to be so elegant and full of class, Anne," he remarked. "But this is a pure turnoff. If I were you, stay in your lane before you fall lower than being a mistress. Being elegant and pretty hides your ugly soul perfectly, so don’t ruin it."
With that being said, Marcus grabbed his bag and left her all alone. Marianne, on the other hand, remained seated on the bench, eyes on his back. She clasped her hand on her lap, her shoulders trembling.
"What’s wrong with him?" she grumbled under her breath.
Marianne didn’t come here because she believed Marcus was flirting with Fil behind Vincent’s back. Even if he was, she wouldn’t stop him. If anything, she would support him. Vincent and Fil had already broken up, so technically, he wasn’t flirting with his friend’s girlfriend.
However, the result was different.
Marcus just went on to be the mean jerk he truly was. He just snapped at her and didn’t even get angry at Vincent, as she expected him to be. She thought if she told Marcus about the reason for Fil and Vincent’s break up, it would make Marcus angry. He was an innocent man, after all, and being accused for no reason was insulting.
Everything she expected didn’t happen.
"What’s going on?" she wondered in distress, hissing as she cast her eyes down. "Why is he being so weird?"
*****
In the shower room of the facility, Marcus stood under the shower. He rested his hands on the wall in front of him, letting the water run on his back. His eyes were dark, thinking about the news Marianne broke to him recklessly.
’Why didn’t she tell me?’ he wondered, remembering that last time he met Fil. ’That time...’
He gulped as he recalled the tension between them and how he almost stole her first kiss. Even after that, Fil didn’t say anything. Who was she trying to protect by keeping that detail a secret? Vincent? Marcus? Or was it the brotherhood the two of them had?
Technically, she broke up with him because his name came up.
Marcus closed his eyes and hissed, balling his hands against the marble walls. "No," he whispered. "Thinking like that will... only give you a false sense of hope."
He wanted to think Fil’s reason was simply to protect Vincent, and not him. Because if he thought her reason was the latter, he would start having weird ideas. Marcus was still struggling to get her out of his mind; he was still buying himself some time to let his urges go away on their own. Thinking about her wouldn’t do him anything good.
Not contacting her was already an achievement for him at the moment. Because it only meant he wasn’t making any mistakes. Fil would be a mistake for him. Not because she was Vincent’s ex-fiancee, but because the aftermath wasn’t worth it.
Vincent and Marcus had their fair share of fights and disagreements. But this one... it wouldn’t be just a problem they could settle over a drink. Not only their friendship would be affected but, it would also affect their collaborations as businessmen.
"Damn it!" he punched the wall out of frustration. "Why did I have to do that?"
Why did he have to be so close to Fil? Why did he attempt to kiss her? Why was she so pretty, kind, smart, and understanding?
"Damn it," he breathed out once more, feeling his knuckles throbbed after punching the marble wall. "Why didn’t she just blame me? Instead of breaking up with him?"
If it were a misunderstanding, Vincent and Marcus could settle it like men. Breaking up with Vincent was a stretch... unless Fil somehow felt guilty. She wouldn’t make such a huge decision if there was no deep reason for it, like guilt.
Marcus’s shoulder relaxed, knowing he was slowly losing his mind for rationalizing the situation to where he felt comfortable. "Fil... why did you have that look in your eyes that night?"
