Chapter 95: You already have me

Chapter 95: You already have me

"Anne?"

Vincent’s eyes went wide, and his first instinct was to look left and right. He clicked his tongue even though he didn’t see anyone, pulling her inside his place, and slamming the door with a bang.

"What the hell are you doing here?" he asked in disbelief. "Wasn’t I clear when I said we lie low?"

"Vincent, I —"

"Fuck!" Vincent ruffled his hair in irritation, pacing back and forth in front of her.

"Vincent, no one followed me here," Marianne reassured, watching his patience burn slowly and steadily. "I know you want us to be careful, and I am being careful."

He hissed, glaring daggers at her. "Careful? You know the articles about us are still going around. You’re in the entertainment industry. How come you don’t know paparazzi do not stop until they get their scoop? If my grandfather hears another of this rumor, do you know what that means for me?"

"Don’t worry —"

"How can I not worry?!" Marianne jolted when Vincent suddenly raised his voice to her. "Even if you’re careful, I told you to be careful because I trust you. Yet, not only you wouldn’t stop ringing my phone, but now, you didn’t even listen to what I said. Do you think I’m not serious?"

"Vincent." Marianne frowned as tears formed in the corner of her eyes. "I’m just... I’m just worried about you."

"If you’re worried about me, you shouldn’t be here!"

"But you and Fil broke up," Marianne blurted out, hurt at the way Vincent talked to her at the moment. "I understand you’re in a delicate position because of your grandfather. That’s why even when I don’t do it a lot, I disguise myself as my assistant to avoid the paparazzi."

Marianne let out a deep exhale, taking a step closer to him. "Don’t be angry at me, Vince." She reached for his hand, smiling subtly. "I missed you."

Vincent calmed down a little when he saw how she was holding her tears back. Her soft smile and affectionate eyes somehow made him step back from snapping at her.

"Fil called you?" he asked out of plain curiosity.

She nodded. "She went to the station today."

"What did she say? I mean, how was she?"

"She was crying," Marianne shrugged, witnessing how the lingering hardness on his face relaxed.

"She is?" Vincent rocked his head, sighing in relief. "So, she’s hurt?"

"You’ve been together for a long time," she said. "What did you expect from her? That she’d party? That’s not like her."

Vincent assessed her face and nodded again. "Right," he whispered. "She wouldn’t do that."

A smile of relief slowly reigned on his face as if an entire pipe had been pulled out of his throat. Just now, he had been agonizing at the fact that Fil might’ve moved on. Who knows? She might have been fed up with this relationship and found an opening to end things with him.

But it seemed he was wrong.

If Fil was crying, then that means she didn’t mean to break up with him. It meant he still had an importance to her.

"I see." Vincent smiled, snapping his eyes to Marianne. "Then, I’ll go see her."

"Vince, wait." Marianne clasped his hand to stop him, watching him look back at her. "I don’t think that’s a good idea."

He frowned. "Huh?"

"She might’ve been crying, but she doesn’t want to see you at the moment. She’s still angry."

"I know she is angry, but I had to fix this before my grandpa’s birthday."

"But she’s not even coming."

"Even if she doesn’t, I still have to fix it."

Her grip on his hand tightened a little, eyes locked with his. "Fil is my best friend, Vince. I know her very well. Give her some time."

"You’re her best friend, but I’m her fiance. We’ve been together longer than you know each other," he argued casually. "What makes you think you know her more than I do?"

Marianne opened her mouth to argue, but then she closed her mouth. Her grip on his hand loosened, taking a deep breath, trying to maintain a strong front.

"If you think that’s the right thing to do, then go," she remarked bitterly. "But I’m warning you. It might not end well."

"Even if it doesn’t end well, I have to do something to fix our relationship," was all he said before turning his back on her. Vincent didn’t even look back, nor did he stop as he opened the door, leaving her all alone in the hotel suite.

Marianne stood motionless in the same spot, staring at the shut door where he walked out. She slowly balled her hands into a tight fist, clenching her teeth until her neck turned taut.

"Fix your relationship?" she repeated and scoffed. "What about us, then?"

It wasn’t like Marianne came in here to suggest making their relationship public. It was true she came because she was worried about him. However, she expected him to at least stay with her like always. But alas, not only did he snap at her, but he also left her all alone, without any trace of reluctance.

"Why do you try so hard?" she whispered, biting her inner bottom lips until the tang of iron filled her tastebuds. "You already have me."

The sorrowful look on her face slowly turned sharp as a glint flickered across her eyes. Marianne raised her chin slightly, scoffing in ridicule.

"You only need me."

[Outside Regal Palazzo Hotel]

Fil was parked a few blocks from the luxury hotel where Vincent had been staying recently. She smirked when she saw Marianne’s assistant’s car drive into it. She didn’t have to see the person inside to know it was Marianne.

"She does like him, huh?" she muttered, nodding in amusement. "I thought it was all games between them. I guess someone fell."

Until now, Fil was unsure of the nature of Vincent and Marianne’s affair. She knew it wasn’t a one-time affair, but unsure if it was more than sex. Thus, she wanted to confirm it herself by confiding to her best friend.

"She’s digging her own grave," Fil whispered, starting up her truck to leave. "She’ll be very hurt once she realizes warming his bed isn’t enough to get the ring."

After all, Vincent had a colossal ego. Unless he was the first man Marianne slept with, he wouldn’t even consider. Marianne had a wild past that she could never erase even if she cried blood. A man like Vincent would have to think of how many men touched her before him. Hence, he kept her hidden. Because if he was truly serious about his affair with Marianne, he would’ve called off the engagement.

Or maybe Fil was wrong. Perhaps there was a deeper reason Vincent hadn’t broken up with her. Either way, it still proved Vincent wouldn’t let her go so easily.

Fil smirked, knowing the cracks she had created in their friendships were slowly spreading. "This is interesting."
