Chapter 75: Comforting a friend

"Good thing I stayed," Marcus expressed, sitting behind the wheel as he drove through the freeway. "If not, I don’t think you could ride something home."

Fil smiled in relief, seated in the front passenger seat. "The chief is kind enough to offer me a ride."

"You trust them?"

"Why not?"

"Fil, you barely know them," he remarked out of concern. "I’m not saying they’re bad people and they might do something bad to you, but I’m saying you can’t trust people so much."

"You’re pretty," he added, eyes on the road. "You don’t know what thoughts you evoke in men."

Fil stared at his side profile, looking at him curiously. "Tell me, Marcus. What kind of thoughts do I evoke in you?"

A moment of silence synced in the inbound breeze after her question. Marcus cast her a sidelong glance, only to see the curiosity in her eyes.

"None," he answered, clearing his throat. "That’s because I’m your friend. I wouldn’t have such thoughts about my friend’s girl."

"But if I am not your friend’s girlfriend?"

"Ha ha." Marcus laughed nervously. "Why are you asking me? I’m just saying everything in general."

"Because I am curious." She shrugged, leaning back comfortably. She shifted her eyes to the window, watching the side road flash before her eyes. "Vincent never told me I’m pretty."

Deep lines appeared between his brows, sneaking a look at her.

"At first, it didn’t matter. He already told me before that I am pretty, but whenever I think about it, I already forgot the last time he said I’m pretty," she continued, this time, her voice was even more quiet and somber. "That’s why sometimes I wonder if I look good."

"You look good now," he quickly reassured, observing her from the corner of his eyes. "Actually, prettier than the majority of the women I dated."

Fil slowly turned her head, staring at his side profile squarely.

"I’d be honest with you. I wasn’t lying when I said you looked good before, but with this change of style — I don’t understand why Vince won’t even appreciate your beauty," he added. "You’re not only gorgeous, but you’re also smart and character-filled."

"You’re beautiful, trust me." This time, he cast her a wink and a wide smile.

"Coming from someone who only dated pretty celebrities and beauty queens, fine." Fil joked, almost giggling. "That somehow made me feel better."

"Vince should treat you better," he murmured. "He can be a real jerk."

"He is."

Marcus raised his brows and looked at her quickly.

"What?" she asked.

"Well, that’s a surprise," he returned, eyes back on the road. "I thought you’d defend him."

"Vincent is my fiance, but that doesn’t mean he’s perfect," she explained as a matter of fact. "Vincent has good qualities, but he also has bad ones. It’s just that I try to focus on the good ones. Even so, that doesn’t mean I deny the bad ones."

"Oh." Marcus rocked his head in understanding, smiling as he realized he was wrong about Fil.

In the past, he was convinced that Vincent was perfect in her eyes. It was annoying because Fil always made everyone feel Vincent was the best. She was, somehow, a great hype woman. That was why they gave her a secret nickname because Fil’s existence greatly inflated Vincent’s ego.

"Why? Do you think I never saw the bad traits Vincent has?" she wondered with genuine wonder in her voice. "That’s strange. Didn’t you say we were friends?"

"I’m sorry," he sighed helplessly. "It’s just that, that’s what I’ve always thought."

"Now, you know you are wrong." Fil slowly set her eyes back on the window, deep in thought. "I loved Vincent, but not blindly."

How she hoped she could’ve said that in the past. But alas, she couldn’t, because she loved Vincent blindly until she was miserable.

As silence slowly descended between them, Marcus smacked his lips. He cleared his throat aloud, tapping his fingers on the steering wheel just not to let the silence dominate them. He would glance at her once in a while, sensing her dropping mood.

"Do you want to talk about it?" he suggested, earning another look from her. "I mean, you and Vincent are my friends. So, I can lend you an ear if you need one. I promise you I won’t tell him everything you would say. I’ll keep it between us. So vent if you need to."

Fil pressed her lips and smiled weakly. "Are you sure? You might not want to hear what I wanted to say."

"Err. I always curse Vincent because he can be insufferable," he quipped, making her chuckle. "So, don’t worry. Even if you curse him, I won’t tell. They said I’m good at keeping secrets."

"I know." She knew that he could keep secrets very well because, if not, Vincent and Marianne wouldn’t even use him as an excuse countless times whenever they would meet each other. And Valerie wouldn’t be comfortable enough to talk trash about Fil in front of Marcus.

"All of your friends trust you the most," she added, watching him smile proudly. "So I know you can keep secrets very well and someone they can rely on."

"So?" he urged playfully. "Should I start talking gibberish about your fiance?"

"There’s no need for that. It’s not like I want to swear or talk bad about him," she expressed with a deep sigh. Fil looked away from him, leaning comfortably on the chair. "It’s just that... I’m a little frustrated. The rumors about Marianne and Vincent don’t affect me, but them, not releasing a statement to clear up the misunderstanding somehow bothers me."

"Oh." Marcus bit his tongue, almost forgetting that Vincent and Marianne were still tied into a ’rumor.’

"Perhaps, because I don’t feel loved enough by my fiance that I’m feeling this way," she added with a voice only above a whisper. "Marcus, you are Vincent’s best friend. And as his best friend, you know him best."

Fil cocked her head back, casting Marcus a curious look. "Do you think... Vincent loves me?"
