Chapter 55: A person’s heart is the most dangerous
Marcus Arkwright.
The only son of the owner of the Arkwright Corporation, one of the largest department stores that had made in the Fortune 500 in the last two decades. It was no rumor that Marcus would be the next head of their family business. He was smart, charismatic, successful... and Fil’s target tonight.
"Hey," Fil smiled gracefully, watching him advance in her direction. "Where’s everyone?"
"They stepped inside for a while." Marcus shrugged as he sat on the stool where Marianne had previously sat. "You know the drill. Whenever Anton is here, things happen."
Her smile cracked, making him smile.
"Don’t worry. Vincent is not with them," he reassured. "He had to take a call. I heard you recommended the Hale Construction as part of the suppliers in the Solana Project."
"He got the call?"
"He didn’t say, but by the looks of it, it seemed that was the call for."
"I see." Fil smiled, rocking her head as she reached for her glass. "Marianne left to change. She spilled her drink."
"She’s probably tired. I heard she did an interview today." Marcus sat leisurely, eyes sliding to the corner where she was. "Everything okay?"
"Mhm." Fil looked back to check on Elise. Elise and Shanaiah were still on their spot, chatting. Knowing Elise and Shanaiah, they would get along for a while.
When she made sure she didn’t have to worry about Elise, Fil slowly looked back at Marcus. He was still staring at her from the corner of his eyes, earning a smile from her.
"Why are you looking at me like that?" she pointed out playfully. "It’s kinda odd."
"Uh, I thought you won’t point that out."
"Why wouldn’t I? It makes me a little self-conscious." Fil massaged her nape, tucking some stray hairs behind her ear. "I mean, you people say I suit the new look, but it makes me wonder if you’re only saying that so as not to hurt my feelings."
"You really look good, Fil."
She raised her brows, setting her eyes on him. As if shocked at what he said, his mouth opened and closed to salvage the situation.
"I mean, you’ve always looked good," he panicked. "But as your friend, we’re just being honest."
Friend? Honesty?
Fil almost laughed at the crap that invaded her ears. Even though Marcus was ’kind’ enough to check on her at every party, just like this tonight, she realized he did it out of pity, not kindness. Perhaps a little guilty conscience?
"Thanks," she blushed, smiling until her teeth were showing. "Now, I feel embarrassed."
"Hehe." Marcus laughed awkwardly, picking up the drink served to him. "Cheers?"
"To what?"
"To your promotion?"
"It’s not a promotion."
"But leading the Solana Project still sounds like one to me."
Fil giggled, taking her glass and raising it a little as a gesture of toast. She only took a small sip, knowing she couldn’t drink too much unless she had a death sentence. That was Jack’s only request to her when she sent him a picture of herself before the party.
As Fil took a sip, Marcus kept his eyes on her. She truly was mesmerizing. Her small smiles and even her giggles were enough to give him butterflies. When she fluttered her eyelashes back to him, he had to force himself to keep a civil smile and not flirt with her.
"About the articles this morning..." he blurted out, biting his tongue when she raised her brows. He smiled, saying, "Never mind."
"Not you too." Fil sighed. "I meant it when I said I don’t believe the rumors."
Fil drew a deep breath and stretched her spine, cupping her cheek, eyes on him. "I trust them. Although there’s always a chance that Vincent might cheat on me, I’m sure it won’t be with Marianne."
"How can you say that?"
"Because she’s my best friend." She arched a brow knowingly. "You won’t betray Vincent by seeing me behind his back, will you?"
"Of course not."
’He hesitated,’ she thought, smiling at him.
Fil had been with this group for a long time, and she knew what sort of people they were. It was just that unlike before, she didn’t make an effort to justify their action to make them more acceptable. Not that she doubted Marcus and Vincent’s friendship. If anything, these two were truly like brothers. They care and have each other’s back and even cover for each other.
She wondered just how strong that was.
"Of course, you won’t," Fil nodded at him. "Not that you were ever interested in your friend’s fiancee."
Marcus let out a weak chuckle, picking up his drink. He briefly raised his brows before chugging it down in one go.
’Back then, although he always checked on me whenever I became the loner at the parties he hosted, he didn’t stay for too long.’Fil snapped her eyes at the entrance of the pool area, catching a man calling for Marcus. Marcus just waved a hand, telling them he would join them in a bit.
Fil slowly set her eyes to his side profile. ’But now, he can’t even get up from that seat,’ she mentally smirked, knowing Marcus and Vincent never fought each other over women. Their supplies were unlimited, and they had different tastes.
After a while, Fil knew Marcus’s type. And thus, the reason she chose her dress for tonight. He liked women who were bold and confident, sexy, but a woman of class. But Fil realized perhaps his type was the same for everyone. Marcus’ attention was her goal, but she got everyone’s. Not that she was complaining; it was convenient for her.
"You can go," she said, earning a look from him. "I’ll join the girls and then go home in a bit. Don’t worry about me."
Marcus offered a friendly smile. "I told Vincent that I’d look after you until he’s back." He winked playfully. "He fears that someone might hit on you if he looks away for a second."
"Haha. That’s silly," she laughed, pushing herself away from the counter to get off the stool. "I’m going and join the girls. So I don’t have to bother you."
Fil stretched her ankle to reach the floor, hopping carefully from the stool to leave. But alas, just as she did, she nearly fell. Fortunately, Marcus’ reflexes were fast. He swiftly held her arms, catching her before a bad fall.
"Ah..." Fil’s eyes went a little wide, gazing up at him in surprise.
As soon as she raised her head, Marcus was looking down at him. The second he locked eyes with her, his mouth fell open in a daze and held his breath at the beauty so close to him.
Fil mentally smirked, seeing that mesmerized look on his face. ’Got him.’
