Chapter 188: Their 3 months in a nutshell
[3 months later...]
Fil’s original plan was to use all her vacation leaves for the year. She was a diligent worker and Olivia, her boss, always told her to rest and have a vacation. However, since Fil’s client at the moment was Jackson, the latter offered a better idea.
Instead of a month’s leave, he offered to give her some work abroad.
She could work while away from the office and still do what she planned to do. Most importantly, she wasn’t obligated to return to the office in a month. As long as the progress in the Solana Project was reaching its schedule, it shouldn’t be a problem.
It was a win.
Hence, after the one-month trial of the setup as the lead engineer of Solana and a consultant to their other projects, she was given another two months. So far, her life had quieted down, and she was able to travel abroad with Jackson under the guise of work. Although it was honest work, they would go on dates and sneak into each other’s hotel rooms.
"Isn’t today my party?" Elijah looked at his mother in dismay while peeling some potatoes. "If today is to celebrate me, why am I in the kitchen peeling potatoes?"
"Elijah, stop complaining and finish those." Irene, his mother, cast him a warning look. "Look at your sister and Jackson. They just returned late last night, but they were still helping."
Elijah scrunched up his nose at Fil and Jackson, who were sitting in the dining, preparing the ingredients. Both of them were tearing up while cutting onions.
"Finish them. Your father and I need to go to the market." Irene said while taking off her apron. She then pointed at Elijah one last time. "Behave yourself."
Elijah frowned deeply as he watched his mother leave the kitchen. Unlike her glared at him, Irene cast Fil a smile and even patted Jackson’s shoulder because they were literally crying.
"Goodness." He shook his head, picked up the bowl of potatoes, and brought it to the dining area. "Did you two break up? Why are you crying?"
Fil and Jackson sniffed hard, barely keeping their eyes open.
"We didn’t break up since were not even dating," said Fil as a gigantic tear rolling down her cheek. "Eli, you want to exchange? Peel the rest of the onions and I will peel all those potatoes."
"That’s the reason I am crying," Jackson commented, eyes at Elijah. "I’m practically living with her, but all she sees me is her doormat."
"Who believes that?" Elijah murmured, glaring at Fil for giving Jackson a hard time. "Even Mom and Dad don’t ask why he is here. You two are practically married."
Jackson nodded, wiping his tears with the back of his hand. "Right? We also..." he trailed off as Fil glanced at him. She only looked at him briefly, but he got the message. "... hold hands. If this is in the past, we’re already considered tainted just because of that."
"Man..." Elijah cupped his face. "It’s my birthday, but I’m asked to prepare for my birthday."
"Why don’t you go back to your room?" Jackson suggested. "Once your sister and I finish crying, we’ll peel the potatoes."
"Really?"
"No." Fil looked heavenward to stop her eyes from tearing up. "Mom will need to boil those potatoes. You need to finish them and boil them before she gets back."
"Bro."
"Sorry. My wife has spoken."
"You’re not even dating." Elijah pouted. "Fine, fine. I’ll do it!"
Elijah reluctantly reached for the peeler and started peeling the potatoes. Jackson and Fil, on the other hand, continued to shed tears while cutting the rest of the onions. A subtle smile appeared on his youthful face, shaking his head mildly.
Fil and Jackson had been in their parents’ home since three months ago. Although sometimes they had to fly abroad for work, the days they spent here were far longer than they were away. Hence, at this point, having Jackson here felt so natural. Their parents, Irene and Simon, didn’t even question his stay.
Nothing was said, but their family already accepted Jackson as part of the family.
"By the way, I invited some of my friends today," Fil broke the peaceful quiet after minutes. "Is that okay with you?"
"It’s fine. It’s not like I invited anyone today."
Fil frowned. "How about your friends?"
"They’re busy."
"Or you don’t have one?"
"I have friends, okay? I just didn’t want them today," Elijah explained, only to see Fil and Jackson looking at him with doubt. "I’m very popular in school."
"Do you believe him, Jack?" she asked, eyes still on her little brother.
"Not a word." Jackson clicked his tongue continuously while shaking his head. "My poor little brother. How come no one appreciates your cleverness?"
Elijah frowned as he darted his eyes between these weeping couple. It didn’t feel good to receive those looks from them when they looked pitiful at this very second.
"Don’t worry." Jackson winked at him. "I got you covered."
Elijah’s brows rose and intuitively glanced at Fil. The latter smiled brightly, making him wonder what was that about.
"What are you two planning?" he asked suspiciously. "I don’t feel good about this."
"It’s not something bad, don’t worry," Fil reassured. "You’ll have a great 18th birthday, Eli."

Elijah didn’t know what his sister and unofficial brother-in-law meant by that until evening came. Standing in his room, Elijah caught several cars parked right outside their house. When he came closer to the window, he squinted his eyes and caught some people hitching outside in every car.
"Is that..." he trailed off and turned his head to the poster on his wall. His mouth fell open as he gazed at the window once more. "... Kim Rock?"
Kim Rock marching to their front door was one thing, but Elijah soon recognized the other faces. Not everyone was a celebrity, but others were athletes whom his father watched every night, and some well-known figures like the developer of the game Elijah was playing.
He watched everything from the window with a gaping mouth, watching Jackson and Fil welcome them to their humble abode. He almost couldn’t believe his eyes when he saw Fil and Kim hug each other as if they were great friends. Well, Elijah wasn’t the only one who was stupefied because his father, who was downstairs, almost kowtowed in front of his favorite athlete.
It had been three months since Fil started working remotely and ever since then, there wasn’t a single day her unofficial fiance didn’t impress her family. And today was like their 3 months in a nutshell.
