Chapter 180: Follow him?

[One hour and a half later...]

Jackson’s worry about Elijah wasn’t a mere joke. He truly valued that young man’s impression of him. After all, he liked him and he didn’t want to disappoint him. But he didn’t have the heart to leave Fil when she was a wreck.

’Here goes to hoping my brother-in-law understands.’

Jackson knocked on the door, telling Elijah it was him. All he heard from the inside was, "It’s opened."

Deep lines appeared between Jackson’s brows, opening the suite and stepping inside. As soon as he did, he saw Elijah playing busily in the living area.

"Hah." Jackson huffed. "Does this mean I do not have to make any lengthy explanation?"

Elijah tilted his body from one side to the other while playing video games. "My sister," he said. "She bothered you, didn’t she?"

"I won’t say she did." Jackson shrugged, throwing himself on the same couch where his soon-to-be brother-in-law was sitting. "Though I almost got engaged."

Elijah looked away from the TV and set his wide eyes at him. "Did she say yes?"

"I said almost."

"Bro, didn’t you say you take no as an answer?" Elijah gasped in disbelief while Jackson sighed.

Jackson guessed it right. Even though Elijah didn’t say the exact words he thought he would say, his face was enough.

"Do you want me to force your sister to marry me?" asked Jackson as he picked up the other controller. "Let me join."

"Heh." Elijah grinned and let him join the game. "So? How was she?"

"She’s doing fine."

"She didn’t even come see me?"

"She’ll come with you home."

Elijah looked at Jackson in surprise. "What do you mean?"

"Your sister took all her vacation leave from work," Jackson muttered while his attention was on the game. "She’ll have a month-long vacation."

"But... why?"

"What do you mean why?" Jackson chose a big character in the game, thinking he would win if he did. After all, Elijah likes choosing female characters in this combat game. "She hadn’t used her vacation since she landed the job. Even if she did, it was only when it was necessary."

Elijah frowned, keeping his attention on Jackson.

"Your turn to choose," said Jackson, casting Elijah a look. "What? You don’t believe me?"

"No. It’s just I know my sister," Elijah explained. "She won’t take a leave for no reason."

"How about missing you? Does that count as a reason?"

"I’m not saying our family isn’t important to her, but her job is just as important. After all, it was her only way to feel closer to my grandpa," Elijah murmured, now worried. "My grandpa always dreamed of becoming an engineer, and by becoming one, she feels like she was living both their dreams. That’s why even if she’s sick, she still comes to work."

"She won’t leave or have a vacation longer than a week if nothing happened," he continued rationally. "Bro, tell me. What is going on with my sister? First, she broke up with that good-for-nothing fiance. God knows I’ve always wanted her to break up with him, but no matter what, she would fight for him."

"But then, when everyone was accepting they’re the end game, she broke off the engagement. Then, she introduced a new man, whom she wouldn’t even admit she’s dating."

"For your information, your sister and I aren’t dating," Jackson corrected. "I’m courting her."

"Same thing." Elijah frowned. "Also, I can’t help but think about what she said before."

"Hmm?"

"She said that whatever we hear, she could explain or something like that," he clarified. "Is she really okay?"

Jackson studied the young lad and smiled in satisfaction. ’She truly has a lovely family this time around... just like how she — we always wished.’

"Don’t worry about your sister," he reassured her brother. "The vacation is what she needed, and it’s about time she embraced that need. If she isn’t okay, then I wouldn’t be here with you."

Elijah studied Jackson before he sighed in defeat. "Man... why didn’t she say yes?"

"I know, right?" Jackson smirked and tipped his head in the game. "Come on. We’ll pick her up later. For now, I’ll crush you. Look at my character and yours."

Elijah shifted his eyes to the television, only to see Jackson’s gigantic and muscled character while Elijah’s character was a loli. He chuckled and cast Jackson a sidelong glance.

"I can beat you even if I use just two fingers," he said, riling up the other man. "Want to make a bet?"

"Ho ho." Jackson laughed. "Alright. I bet a hundred thousand, then."

"Wait! I don’t have that much of a money!" Elijah gasped, almost choking when he heard the stake. "Although I know I’ll win, ten bucks is enough."

"Ten?" Jackson scrunched up his nose but then shrugged. "Sure?"

Meanwhile, Fil returned to the hotel for her luggage. She promised Marianne that she would come back, and she planned to keep it. Until she leaves this place and slowly cuts them all off, she doesn’t want to raise any suspicion.

But just as she was about to leave the taxi, she caught Michael walking out of the hotel driveway. For some reason, Fil leaned back and hid in the backseat.

"Miss?" called the cab driver, glancing at her in the rear mirror.

"Please let me stay for a while," Fil murmured, watching Michael stand by the driveway while waiting for his valet. It took an entire minute before the valet came with Michael’s motorcycle, making the latter smile and nod.

With that, Michael jumped on the motorcycle and sped away.

"Do you want to follow him?" asked the cab driver, as he seemed to have created a narrative in his head about his passenger and that other man. "This happens usually, and you’re not the first woman who followed their boyfriends or husband."

Fil slowly looked at the cab driver, rendered speechless by how he managed to jump into the finish line within a minute time frame.

"Should I follow him, Miss?"

Fil opened and closed her mouth, glancing at the small traffic at the exit of the driveway. She could still see Michael and if she agreed now, she could still follow him. Slowly, Fil looked back at the cab driver and smiled.
