Chapter 156: That’s a shame
Chapter 156: That’s a shame
Knowing Valerie and Rosalind, Fil was certain those two wicked duo would try to do something. However, there was nothing that came to Fil’s mind with the chairman around. They might be hilariously dumb and cruel, but they would never do anything to humiliate the chairman purposely.
The chairman might be kind and generous, but he could also be harsh to his family. He wouldn’t hesitate to throw away even his only daughter and granddaughter just to teach them a lesson. Hence, Fil should’ve known there were other ways to attack her without humiliating the chairman and Vincent.
Another round of applause erupted in the venue hall as Vincent presented the masterpiece he painstakingly got his hands on for his grandfather. Although not many of them were art enthusiasts, those who knew a thing or two recognized the value of it.
"Chairman Hale, I do not want to ask this, but if you’re interested, maybe we can set up your grandson and my daughter for a blind date?" suggested a man at the same table as the chairman. "The chief director is already at the age of marrying. He should have children of his own while he’s young."
"Ahem!" another man cleared his throat. "We all want someone like the chief director as a son-in-law, but isn’t your daughter recently involved in a rumor?"
The men started to banter again, this time trying to set up their daughters or granddaughters with Vincent. No one could blame them. Watching Vincent from afar, one would be impressed by his demure, eloquence, and overall upbringing.
Vincent was the only candidate for the next head of the Hale Family. Additionally, he was smart, graduated from a prestigious university, and since joining Hale Constructions he has made significant smart decisions for the company’s benefits. The gift he presented tonight and how this event unfolded without a hitch proved many things aside from money.
The art Vincent gifted to his grandfather was not something one could easily obtain. Regardless of how much money one got, it wasn’t as easy as that. After all, this renowned painter only makes a piece every three years or five. If Vincent got it, then that left many people wondering:
What else could this man achieve?
Hence, the interest.
"Grandpa," called Vincent as soon as he got down from the stage and approached the chairman. He smiled subtly. "I hope you liked my gift."
The chairman maintained a smile, nodding approvingly. "I’m surprised how you obtained a piece from Master Huang’s work. You must’ve worked hard."
Vincent pressed his lips into a thin line, still maintaining a smile. He then shifted his eyes to Fil, only to see her looking at him emotionlessly. A shallow breath slipped past his lips, about to return to his table, but the men at the table spoke.
"Chief Director Hale, we were just discussing if you were interested in blind dates," said a man heartily, knowing the chairman wouldn’t indulge with them in this matter. "If you are interested, you can always give me a call."
"Haha. You can choose which of my daughters you want," another one suggested.
"Disgusting pigs. Treating your daughters like commodities," Madam Sinclair hissed, but her comment was ignored. "Which proved my point in my earlier argument."
She intuitively glanced at Fil and smiled when she caught the latter looking. Fil might not speak her mind, but she agreed. But Fil treated it as a normal occurrence. This wasn’t news, after all. Elites only wanted elites to marry in their family. It wasn’t like Vincent was a bad catch. It just had its downsides since they had to deal with a cheating son-in-law.
Not her problem.
"I’m flattered by all the invitations and interest. But I’ll have to deny the idea respectfully." Vincent politely refused the men with a smile. "I already had my eyes on someone."
As soon as those words rolled out of his tongue, his eyes fell on Fil. "All she got to do is say, ’yes,’ and the next invitation you’d get is a wedding invitation."
Fil stared at Vincent, mentally hugging her inner bitch to stop it from taking charge. After all, from the outside, Vincent appeared like a man who was pursuing a hard woman who would’ve given him a chance. If only they knew she had given him a million chances and he blew every single bit of it.
"Oh, ho!" an old man at the table laughed teasingly, darting his eyes between Fil and Vincent. "I see! Well, that makes perfect sense! The chairman had always been fond of Miss Lovin."
"That’s a shame," another man chimed in with a defeated sigh. But not all of them were discouraged.
"If you change your mind, you can always give me a call, Chief Director," someone offered shamelessly, which was then followed by others.
This time, Vincent turned down those extended offers with a simple smile. Even so, his refusal wasn’t taken to heart.
"Vincent," the chairman called, his smile remained, but there was displeasure in his tone. "I appreciated your gift, as I am very well aware of how you worked hard to get it. However, do not put my guest in an uncomfortable situation."
"I’m sorry. I got carried away since I hadn’t had the time to talk to her. It won’t happen again." Vincent’s smile broadened before casting Fil a look. "Though I still wanted to tell you, you’re really gorgeous tonight, Fil."
"Thanks," Fil smiled back, keeping it civil with him.
"Very well. The event will move on with another classical performance. I hope everyone is having a great night and..." Vincent trailed off as the host suddenly spoke into the microphone.
The slight confusion in the host’s voice was enough to garner many people’s attention. When they looked at the stage, they caught the host looking at a small card.
"Before we move on to the next page of tonight’s party, I would like to call on the stage a very special person in the chairman’s life as the last guest to present her gift." The host smiled at the crowd and, for some reason, when his eyes fell on Fil, her heart jumped. "Miss Filomena Lovin."
Another faint round of applause echoed in the hall, while some were confused. Madam Sinclair and the chairman were one of those who didn’t see this coming.
"Oh? Miss Lovin prepared a spectacular gift too?" someone at their table mused. "I would love to see that!"
Fil sat frozen on the spot as she stared blankly at the host. When she glanced at Vincent and caught the confusion on his face, she knew he didn’t know this either. When Vincent looked back at her, his eyes immediately gleamed apologetically, as if he already found out who did it.
’I should’ve known they won’t be able to sleep tonight without humiliating me,’ thought Fil as she discreetly gazed in Valerie and Rosalind’s direction. ’Well, what can I say? I just hope Madam Sinclair is right. The chairman would be happy with whatever I give him. If he was, everyone would also be happy.’
Regardless of her reluctance, Fil had no choice but to come up to the stage. Even though she knew she might end up humiliating herself, it would be the same if she refused to come up.
