Chapter 135: One act of kindness

"Vincent had an accident."

Marcus and Fil held each other’s gaze when those four words rolled out of her tongue. Four words and Marcus could already foresee where this was going. Even so, he offered to drive her to the hospital where Vincent was admitted.

The entire journey was spent in silence, with Marcus glancing at Fil every once in a while. Her expression was solemn, making it hard for him to read what was on her mind. However, the way she clasped her hands on her lap so tightly was enough for him to know.

She was worried.

’Damn it,’he mentally hissed, slowing down as they entered the hospital’s driveway. When he stopped, he turned his head to her.

Fil glanced at the window before she looked back at him. "Thank you for the ride," was all she said while unbuckling her seat.

Fil was about to get out when Marcus suddenly grabbed her wrist. Looking back, the first thing she saw was the little flame in his eyes. By the looks of it, he wanted to tell her something. However, he said nothing.

"I have to see him," she offered him a meek smile. "Thank you."

His lips parted, but no word came out. Marcus could only nod before he slowly released her hand. Once he did, Fil unhesitatingly stepped out of the car and jogged her way to the entrance. Marcus kept his eyes on her back, sighing once she was out of his sight.

"Seriously," he hissed, readjusting his position to drive away. "Is this his plan to win her back? This is so pathetic."

Marcus punched the steering wheel in frustration. The vein in his forehead protruded, grinding his teeth in irritation. He took some time to gather himself before he drove away. After all, he couldn’t come with Fil, as it would only raise more questions.

Fil rushed to the ward where she was told Vincent was. Of course, she didn’t believe he was in critical condition. At the back of her mind, she knew this was probably just another of his schemes to make her come back to him. He even made his mother call her while crying, telling her about what happened and that her son needed her.

That was an A for Effort.

Much to Fil’s surprise, when she reached the private room. The door opened up before she could even knock. Standing before her was a tall, middle-aged doctor and a few of his team. With him was a familiar stout madam.

"Fil!" Rosalind, the slightly stout madam, exclaimed the second she recognized Fil. "Oh, dear, you came!"

Fil flinched a little when Rosalind rushed to her, holding her hand, smiling at her in relief. Her brows were slightly knit at the sudden affection she was receiving from her.

’There’s no way Vincent would make his mother pretend to like me,’ she thought, pulling her hand away from Rosalind’s hand. "Auntie, what happened?"

Rosalind’s smile stiffened at Fil’s action, but she maintained a smile. "He was in the warehouse to check the shipments for a project, but some materials weren’t properly handled," she explained with a sigh, facing the doctor.

"Madam Hale, we’ll check on him hourly to make sure everything will be alright," said the doctor reassuringly. "For now, it’s best if he rests."

"Thank you, Doctor." Rosalind nodded in gratitude.

With that being said, the doctor offered her a smile, and then at Fil before they left. Once the entrance had more room, Fil set her eyes on the pretentious Rosalind. She was expecting this woman to change temperament like a switch, but Rosalind kept her gentle smile.

"Vincent just woke up, and the chairman is inside," said Rosalind. "Let’s get in. Vincent had been looking for you since he woke up."

Fil mentally rolled her eyes upon hearing Rosalind’s remarks. ’No wonder she’s being kind to me. The chairman is here.’

Even so, Fil followed Rosalind inside the private ward.

"Vincent, Fil is here, dear," Rosalind announced as they walked, making Vincent turn his head in their direction.

His eyes softened as a weak smile turned up on his face. "Fil," he called gently. "You came."

Fil paused in her tracks while Rosalind sauntered to the feet side of the bed. The latter offered a kind smile and then Fil shifted her eyes to the old man in a suit sitting on the other side of the bed.

"Chairman," she called, holding her hand in front of her. "I’m glad to see you doing well. How have you been?

"Filomena, my child, why are you so formal?" the old man smiled warmly and genuinely. "Take a seat, child. The doctors said not to strain that boy, so let him just listen."

Fil forced a smile at the chairman, mentally sighing in distress. Now, what? How could she call out Vincent’s crap if his grandfather was here?

"Come here, Fil," Rosalind urged, walking back to Fil’s side and ushering her to the chair next to the old man. Fil could only smile at the pretentious Rosalind, who always pretended to be an angel from heaven in front of her father.

"I’ll bring you some tea, hmm?" Rosalind hummed, smiling affectionately at Fil. "Do want anything else?"

"Ice cream," Fil blurted out and then smiled, making Rosalind’s brows rise a little. "And some cupcakes, Auntie. I saw a cafe on my way here, and I thought they sold good muffins. Thank you, Aunty."

Rosalind’s smile twitched a little, but she still smiled. "Of course."

’At least that felt nice,’ Fil mentally laughed, watching Rosalind walk away to do the errand she probably never expected.

"Fil," called Vincent as soon as his mother left. He reached his hand out a little to her. "Come here, please?"

"Vincent, your attending told you to rest. Filomena is already here. Toughen up or she might worry," said the chairman adamantly. He then turned his head to Fil, smiling affectionately as if he was deeply fond of her.

"You seemed to have lost weight a lot, Filomena," the chairman pointed out, assessing her beautiful face. "Is everything alright?"

"Of course, Grandpa. Everything’s alright. I was just... busy."

"The Solana Project?"

"Yes."

"Heh. Solana Project is big and as the head engineer, of course, you’d be preoccupied," he nodded proudly. "That is why I feel terrible that you’re still coming to my party, even though you’ve been very busy."

’Huh?’ Fil blinked. ’What did he say?’

"Child, I’m really glad that you finally agreed to attend my party," the old man continued with a hearty laugh. "After all these years..." he paused, patting her shoulder mildly. "... but you do not have to push yourself, alright? I won’t get angry if you can’t come again. I’ll understand."

The chairman reassured and reminded her of her health’s importance rather than his own party. However, Fil couldn’t simply ignore the situation.

’I already know about this, thanks to Valerie’s nonstop mouth, but, ’ she mentally sighed, as she kept her gaze on him. ’This cannot go on.’

At the end of the day, even though she might want to punish certain people, she genuinely didn’t want the chairman to get involved. Or at least, as a one act of kindness for the old man and hope he would see through the lies.
