Chapter 89: A pro in framing people
At the hospital.
Jia watched the entire conversation and situation unfold with a big question mark on top of her head. Even if Anhe threw the knife in moment of instability, she expected it to be aimed at Jinping, who she had blamed and was responsible for the tragedy.
Why did she throw that knife at Bojing? It makes more sense towards Jinping...
Why doesn’t she like Bojing?
Similar to Mingshen, she had also faintly noticed Anhe’s discomforting gazes at Bojing back in the horror house maze. But she thought she misunderstood it then.
Jia stared at Bojing long and hard, trying to discern the answer in him. She then looked at Yong, whom she recalled was pretty much ignored. She alternated her gaze back and forth between Bojing and Yong until it dawned upon her.
Is it their beauty?
Her train of thoughts broke as she heard Mr. Geng apologized to Mingshen, sweating profusely. "Pl-Please excuse my daughter, Dr. Yang. With what she has gone through..."
"What she has gone through has nothing to do with why she threw the knife," Mingshen gave a chilling smile. "It’s a completely different problem with her, which is why I am not so forgiving."
"I-It’s fine, Boss!" Bojing pitched in to tone down the tension.
"It’s not, so be quiet."
Mrs. Geng urged her, whispering to her ear. "Apologize to her, dear or-"
"No! No way I won’t-" Suddenly letting out a shudder, her eyes darted left and right and she exclaimed. "So-Sorry...I am v-very sorry! Pl-Please forgive me!"
Drops of sweat moistened her brows as she uttered breathlessly and pulled the duvet closer to her chest.
This sudden change in her tone bewildered Jia as Anhe didn’t look like she would readily apologize towards Bojing. But then again, Mingshen was right beside her, his intimidating presence growing sinister on a whole different level.
It is hard not to apologize, she thought.
Shilin returned with a small dressing around his palm followed by Bojing who treated him. As the tension seemingly calmed down, Jia brought the focus back on the case.
"Miss. Geng. I am very sorry to hear what has happened. Rest assured, the heinous culprit won’t be spared. That’s why if it’s okay with you, can you please tell me about the events before you were struck?"
Mr. Geng gritted his teeth. "Yes, tell them everything, Anhe!"
Jia studied her forcing herself to take deep, long breaths and resolve her disorientation. Her lips were muttering something as if she was talking to herself.
"Miss. Geng?"
Gaining back her focus, Anhe’s teary blazing gaze fell upon Jinping, who kept touching his throat in discomfort. "I...I got lost in the maze. I couldn’t call anybody. There was no network. Th-The ghosts then began to haunt me. And not just ghosts but this bitch too!" She accused Yong, pointing her sharp finger at her.
"Yong was there. Sh-She was following me everywhere just like a ghost!"
The first person to give a baffled look was Daxia. "Huh? Yong was there? But Yong was with us in the second tunnel for the entire time."
"Don’t you dare go against me, Daxia!" She snarled.
"I-I am not thinking anything like that. It’s just that Yong was with Shilin and me, so I just wondered how..."
Jia glanced at Yong, who didn’t seem too concerned with this allegation against her. She simply leaned against the wall, yawning.
She asked Anhe, "Was Yong anywhere near you when you were attacked? Or did she directly hurt you in any way?"
"...N-Not the way Jinping did...b-but she was there! She was with my group in the first tunnel!"
"No, Anhe. Shilin can vouch for me though," Daxia nervously blurted out.
The mention of Shilin softened her temper and she dialed down on the harshness. "Shilin, there is a misunderstanding, right? I think Daxia didn’t see clearly. Y-Yong was definitely missing from the second tunnel, right?"
Shilin’s brows pitched together in hesitation. "No, Anhe. Daxia is right. Yong was walking with us the whole time."
She froze and tears spilled out. "N-No...this is definitely wrong! She was there! I saw her! She was chasing after me! She was in the first tunnel!"
Jia looked thoughtful.
There was a passage from the third to the second tunnel for Bojing to slip out, and there was another way from the second to the first tunnel as the attendant had explained.
"Bojing, can you verify what they are saying?" She asked.
Bojing seemed lost in a daze staring hard at Shilin’s palm.
"Bojing?"
"Huh!?"
"Can you confirm that Yong was with you and the group in the second tunnel?"
"O-Oh!" He nodded hard. "Yes. There were Yong, Shilin and Daxia w-when I crashed into the second tunnel. Then w-we were all walking together till the end..."
A frost formed in Anhe’s expression that grew darker and darker.
Jia kept her gaze at Yong. "The three have testified regarding your presence, but do you have to add anything?"
Yong raised her brow. "Well it’s not really new of her doing this, right? Framing people left and right. She is a pro at this."
Mrs. Geng lashed out. "Mind your tongue! Here my daughter has suffered through such a harrowing experience and you are mocking baseless accusations at her!"
Yong burst into laughter. Her cynical chuckles eerily brought an unsettling chill in the air. "You say some really funny things, Mrs. Geng. It’s an accusation when there might be hints of falsity in it. But I am not accusing her. It IS the truth. It is the truth which is why she is so riled up by ’my presence in the first tunnel.’ Right, Anhe?"
Anhe threw her a cold stare.
Yong threw a sideways glance at the gang. "Am I right or not?"
Everybody strangely averted her gaze and remained silent.
"Even if she ’supposedly’ did see me, so what?" Yong smiled. "Why am I so terrifying to her? I wonder if it was me or something else related to me...Right, Principal Geng?"
Mr. Geng wasn’t prepared for the sudden question thrown at him. "Huh?"
"Oh dear, it seems your hearing problem hasn’t resolved yet. My apologies."
"Yong! You dare talk to the principal that way!?"
Yong shrugged her shoulders and yawned out, unaffected by his temper. "I am going to the washroom. Don’t worry, Inspector. I have no reason to escape."
Jia nodded, releasing a soft sigh.
Bojing, who was still staring at Shilin’s palm, his eyes lit up with a long searching realization.
"Any problem, Mr. Lu? You have been staring at my hand for a while," Shilin asked, confused.
"N-No! It’s nothing! I will be back!"
—
"E-Excuse me!"
Outside Yong, who was about to take the turn towards the restroom, halted. She looked back at Bojing who was running to meet her.
"Slow down. What, did the Inspector send you to keep an eye on me?" She rolled her eyes.
"No..."
Bojing’s social anxiety crept up, and he did his best to speak to a stranger, shivering and trembling with tears. "I came to ask you something. C-Can I?"
"Shoot."
"Th-That bandaid. I remembered now. The band aid on your cheek wasn’t there when I crashed into y-your group from the third tunnel."
She stared at him hard. "...Sorry?"
"The band aid on your left cheek," he pointed. "I-It’s there now. It was t-there when we entered the horror h-house. Then as we were w-walking, I d-didn’t see the band aid on your face. But after some time, the band aid w-was back again. It felt so confusing t-that I couldn’t figure out what felt wrong to me this w-whole time. So I came to a-ask if you had removed the band aid for some time?"
