Chapter 86: Jinping’s side of story

Chapter 86: Jinping’s side of story

Mingshen entered the ward only to be amused looking at Anhe holding a hand mirror who was busy setting her hair.

"You seem very relaxed for someone who was almost murdered a few hours back."

"I don’t have to worry about anything anymore, right? Dad and that Inspector will take care of it. Jinping and Yong are done for."

For the time being, she was kept unaware of Aang’s potential involvement.

Anhe asked, "Can I use your phone?"

"Why?"

"I want to take a selfie and make a post."

"What will that achieve for you?"

"Pity. Sympathy. That bruise must look so ugly on my forehead," she looked at the dressing wrapped around her head in the mirror, gritting her teeth with indignation. "It takes so much effort to keep yourself pretty and then this happens..."

She looked up at Mingshen, dazzled by his roguish elegance. She felt a momentary loss of speech.

"Anyway. This bruise won’t leave a scar, right? I definitely don’t want a scar."

Mingshen sat on the chair beside her bed, folding his right leg over his left. He rested his chin on his palm, deliberating on her thought process. "You care more about the scar than your recovery?"

"I am not dead, which is fine right? The wound will heal. But I will be ridiculed if it leaves a scar."

"What is there to be ridiculed for? It’s natural to get scars if you get hurt."

Anhe paused her actions and looked at him. His deep, black eyes with the overflow of evil and wickedness was a mesmerizing moment to behold.

"Life must have been so easy for you, right?"

"In what way?"

"Being so handsome. Good body, good face. People would have followed you everywhere."

He shrugged his shoulders up. "I have my fair share of fan following."

She smiled. "It’s only because you are beautiful. The moment you aren’t, you will be sidelined like trash. So I value beauty over anything. Just being pretty alone makes life so much easier and simpler. Makeup and phone camera filters are such a boon. You can hide your ugly self with them, otherwise the world isn’t so forgiving."

"I observed so. All the friends in your group are quite good-looking or at least come in the above-average category. Definitely the one you have hots for," he meant Shilin.

"It’s the rule of the world that all like-minded people hang out together," she said with a smile. "Isn’t that how all social groups form? Pretty people, nerdy people, ugly people, rich people, poor people - everybody eventually falls into their deserved category of social circle."

He cocked a brow. "Interesting. But here’s what I think. Despite claiming that you favor beauty over anything else, that theory doesn’t fit well in regards to my assistant, does it?"

"Your assistant?"

"The man who accompanied the Inspector and me in the horror house and the same person who stood beside Spicy in the video call."

It was faint, but Mingshen caught the discomforting flicker in her eyes.

"Not really. He is a beautiful man," she looked unaffected.

Mingshen chuckled, knowing fully well that he was about to step on her tail. "More beautiful than you, right?"

A thin crust of ice formed in her eyes.

"I understand your predicament. He has that feminine allure that women crave to have. It’s a beauty that no matter how much you might loathe, you cannot take your eyes off it. That’s why you frowned in so much displeasure whenever my assistant was around in the horror house. I had noticed you giving him those envious gazes. You ignore the other girl for the same reason, right? What is her name, Yong?"

Her fingers tightened around her palm.

"She has a certain seductive charm about her. Not necessarily sexual in nature but enough to make the eyeballs turn to her side."

A frightening chill settled in her smile. "Oh my, are you seduced by her?"

"Are you affected by it if I am?" He shot back with his twinkling orbs.

"Can I get your phone?" She asked instead of answering.

"I don’t listen to conceited people."

"Aren’t you one yourself?"

"Conceitedness coupled with substance counts."

That seemed to hit her nerve. "And you believe I don’t have substance?"

He got up, adjusting his pristine white coat. "People with harmful jealousy don’t."

Anhe simply let out a scoff. She took off the blanket and moved.

"Where are you going?"

"Washroom. Why, is it tempting to follow me?" She asked teasingly.

"I am only tempted to follow Spicy and make her life miserable," he smiled. "Anybody else is not worth my time."

She gave him a hard stare. "Tell me honestly. Do you find me beautiful?"

"The question should be do you find yourself beautiful. If you get that correct answer, then you don’t need anybody’s validation like I don’t," he sneered.

Anhe didn’t respond and in the end, she just rolled her eyes. "Preachy."

She moved off the bed to step down when a certain pain shot somewhere in her body. She bit her lip hard, feeling something terribly wrong.

"What?" Mingshen asked, noticing her discomfort.

"Nothing..." she shrugged it off but as she bent again, she felt the prickly sensation another time.

"What is it? I can see it in your face that something is wrong."

Anhe didn’t know how to spell it. "It strangely hurts..."

"Where?"

"Th-There."

"Be more specific."

She looked away, struggling to answer. "I think in...in my...va-vagina..."

It was only a second later’s silence that Mingshen commanded. "Stay back. I need to check something."

At the amusement park.

"Tha-That’s a lie!"

Jinping breathlessly urged in an attempt to defend himself from Anhe’s accusation. "I didn’t meet Anhe. I didn’t harm her at all!"

His face had lost all its color and he kept drinking water back to back, quenching his nervous thirst.

Jia said, "Anhe is hospitalized and recovering. Do you think she will lie about the person who brought her into this state?"

"She can because she wants to kick me out of the group!" His eyes reddened. He proceeded to tell his side of the story which she had gotten a gist of by Huojin already.

"I always knew that I didn’t belong with her group. I was like a last minute pull in because of my project. Otherwise," he let out a wry, painful laugh, "I am not worthy enough to be a part of her gang. It hurt at first to see her take all the credit for my hard-worked project.

But I was a loner, so I felt it was okay if I could make friends this way...It was stupid, but I just wanted to enjoy my college life and not just study. It has always been difficult for me to approach or gel with people. So, I jumped at the chance I got."

’Ah Jinping, you are so amazing. How do you do this complicated stuff?

’Hang out with us, Jinping. It’s so fun to be around you!’

’What? You didn’t have friends before? Duh, people are so blind. But now you have us. We will stick together forever!’

’What’s your favorite food, Jinping?’

’What’s your favorite picnic spot?’

’What’s your favorite music?’

"She was the first one to ask such questions to me. Wanting to know me, wanting to talk about my interests...Nobody did that before. It felt so pleasant. Just like a regular group of friends...I wasn’t lonely anymore," His gaze lowered. "But then one day I heard her talking..."

’Ugh! Enough is enough. I cannot tolerate Jinping anymore,’ Anhe hollered. "Too plain. Too average. Too nerdy. He sticks out like a sore thumb in our gang. Do you hear how other students secretly mock us because of him?’

Aang shrugged. ’We got saved because of his project.’

Daxia supported him. ’Th-That’s true!’

She snorted. ’Yeah thank you very much but that shitty period is over now. A loner like him got to hang out with us in exchange which is more than a fair trade. I want him out.’

Yibo sneered. ’And paint yourself as a selfish woman who used him?’

’Who said I will lower my reputation?’ She smiled. ’Remember what happened with Li Beiye? I will pull something similar. He will be out without dragging my name in the mud. The only person to blame and scorn will be himself.’

Jinping stammered. "T-That’s why I know she must be plotting something. Same thing with Yong. Wasn’t Yong in the second tunnel? Then how can she see her in the maze? She is targeting us because she loathes us!"

Jia was about to respond when she received a text from Mingshen. The one sentence struck her akin to lightning.

She looked at Jinping, her gaze darkening ferociously. "Apart from hitting her head on the wall, you went as far as sexually assaulting her too?"
