Chapter 74: Not salty but dead angry
Inside the second tunnel, Shilin helped Bojing stand on his feet as the latter dusted his clothes, sniffling and crying. "Wh-where am I?"
"This is the second tunnel. But what are you doing here, Mr. Lu? Weren’t you in the third tunnel?"
Tears welled in Bojing’s eyes and he burst into them. "I was! B-But I don’t know what happened...My foot got stuck into something a-and I crashed a-against the wall. It suddenly opened and I fell inside..."
Bojing covered his face, reliving the nightmare. "H-How will I go back to B-Boss and sis n-now? This is so sc-scary..."
His trembling body made Shilin feel sorry for him. He looked at the wall that had just collapsed to throw Bojing out, but it didn’t seem like there was a way to open it and go back to the third tunnel again.
"Hm, I am not sure if there is a way to go back to the third tunnel."
Bojing paled.
"But you are free to join us. We are finding the exit anyway," he smiled.
That brought color back to his face. "Re-really?"
"Yeah," he asked Daxia, "It’s alright, right?"
"Huh? S-sure!"
Well as long as he just stays aside and doesn’t come in between Shilin and my time...
Shilin threw a glance at Yong, but she looked unbothered. It was better not to provoke. He smiled at Bojing and said, "Let’s go."
"Th-Thank you!"
He apologetically peeked at Daxia and Yong for his intrusion and tremblingly stepped in between Yong and Shilin to join the group. But the latter cleared his throat and whispered into Bojing’s ear. "It’s better to walk on my left side. Yong is well..."
Bojing blinked at his awkward expression.
"...Not in a really good mood."
"Oh."
He remembered Jia saying that she felt Yong did look like she was forced to join for this trip. It was no wonder if she would be irritated.
I-I am already forcing myself into this group. I don’t want to a-annoy anybody further!
He stared at Yong for a few seconds and bowed apologetically at her while quickly zooming past to Shilin’s left side. She didn’t bother with any reaction.
Daxia’s jaw dropped in shock.
Why did he come in between us? Come on!
She inwardly cried in frustration, thinking of the distance between her and Shilin. Bojing felt a steely and cold gaze from his left and lacked tears to shed.
Ah...! I also remembered sis Jia saying that this girl h-has feelings for Shilin. Now, I am w-walking in between them. Ahhh, she must hate me now!!!
Bojing glanced at the sides and wondered if he should walk at the extreme left so that Daxia and Shilin would be in the middle just as she would want.
"D-do you want to ta-take my place?" He nervously asked Daxia, clasping his hands together.
Daxia beamed with that question and her annoyance for him immediately dissipated.
Seems like he understood my plight!
"Sure if that’s what you want..."
Shilin heard the conversation and slightly scratched the chin. "Are you sure, Mr. Lu? You wouldn’t want to get slipped inside another wall, do you?"
"..."
Just the mere thought of the horrific inter-tunnel ride brought chills right up to his bones. In no way did he want another wall to eat him up and spit him out like trash. His figure instantly became smaller as he whispered tearfully. "No..."
"Then better stay right here. Also, don’t worry, Daxia. Just stick to Mr. Lu’s side."
Damn it!
Daxia’s shoulders slumped downward in defeat.
The group passed through seemingly endless corridors as shadowy and haunted figures chased them through the walls and roofs to give them the fright of their life. Bojing felt an uneasy sensation as he kept walking.
"Are you okay, Mr. Lu?" Shilin asked.
"A-ah? Oh! Yeah I am a-afraid here but something is bo-bothering me. I don’t know what though..." he pursed his lips, looking confused.
"Might be the horror atmosphere here. It’s just all an illusion," he said to ease the group’s fear.
He sniffled. "It’s difficult to e-explain that to the heart..."
"Point taken."
Bojing asked, "H-How come you aren’t s-so affected by these things? They aren’t real but still..."
"Oh," Shilin glanced at him with the tunnel’s dimness. "I have had my fair share of meeting monsters in real life. Ghosts, in comparison, pale in front of them."
Bojing almost asked him ’What monsters?’ but thinking back to his own dark childhood being treated as a research subject and tortured in an orphanage building by the mad scientist Li Dong, he couldn’t agree more with Shilin.
"Monsters..." he whispered. "I have met some too then?"
"Is that so?"
His stupor broke as he didn’t expect Shilin to catch his inaudible words.
"No-Nothing!"
A harrowing and slamming door kind of a noise echoed through the chamber once again as if signaling them that they were locked in this nightmare forever. Daxia and Bojing shrieked and cried hard. Shilin shook his head and talked about random stuff to divert their attention. Eventually they reached a dead end where there seemed to be no sign of any exit.
Daxia stammered. "How come there is no door here...?"
"Maybe the switch or knob is hidden somewhere. Let’s find it."
—
The bad news struck Jia when the mirror-door refused to move as if it had taken an oath to not listen to them. It seemed to have gotten jammed at a certain point beyond which it was impossible for the door to move.
Damn don’t tell me...
Jia called out for help but there wasn’t any response from the staff. Mingshen shrugged and gave up in the end, dusting his hands. "Well, somebody will eventually come when they won’t see anybody coming out from the third tunnel, so I won’t waste my breath for something unnecessary."
She pressed the space in between her brows.
No more time with this idiot please...
"Your expression says that you are very thrilled for this accidental outcome," he smiled as he royally sat on the bed, stretching his legs outward.
"It’s not so fun when the person I am stuck with tried to steal my heart once. Literally," she grimaced.
"Aish, you are still so salty about that."
She threw him a speechless look. "Hell I am! You were gonna take my heart as if a teenager was doing some simple shoplifting. I am not just salty, I am dead angry!"
