Chapter 365: Jia, the diva
Chapter 365: Jia, the diva
Jia shook her head. "Prepare me mentally from next time."
"Anyway, Meng Rin will be protected, don’t worry~ What else?"
"Meng Rin gave me an important piece of information. It might be possible that Miss. Nuwa was related to the Zhuo family."
Mingshen’s expression immediately changed.
"Zhuo?"
Jia gave him a gist to which he quietly listened.
"So I will focus my investigation on Zhuo Zihan. The timeline matches too. If she was connected to him, then it is possible that-"
Jia took a quick glance around to see that she was completely alone.
"It is possible that Commissioner Zhong might be involved with somebody in his family related to her disappearance. This also confirms my suspicion."
"Suspicion."
"When I was checking Commissioner Zhong’s career track record, I found it really odd that he was quickly promoted to Commissioner thirteen years ago. But his service record doesn’t highlight any exceptional achievements for him to be considered. On the other hand..."
Her eyes narrowed.
"Su Lingyun’s record is quite impressive. They were both serving at the same time. I checked with some retired cops who were there at that time and they said that there were whispers of him getting promoted in the very near future. But then Miss. Nuwa disappeared, he got involved in it and it was after that case that he was arrested for some drug abuse. And guess who made that arrest?"
He raised his brow. "Your Commissioner seems to be a very colorful person."
She smiled. "Exactly. He made the arrest. He gathered the evidence. And he eventually got promoted to Commissioner soon after that."
"One hell of a coincidence?"
"Or one hell of political backing," she grimaced with disdain. "The ones who he helped bury Miss. Nuwa’s disappearance must be the same people who accelerated his promotion and position in the bureau."
Her brows strained with utter loathe. A good, honest cop was accused of false charges and made to spend his life in jail while his lover was threatened and forced to live a lonely life.
Her gaze darkened. "I don’t care how long this happened but I am not letting anybody go unscathed."
"...Will you be going to the Zhuo mansion again?"
"Not right away. I just cannot go there and suddenly interrogate them about Miss. Nuwa. I don’t have any basis or evidence. It’s just hearsay by the Hou’s family maid at this point. But I will comb through every connection that Commissioner Zhuo might possibly have with the family."
"You should wait until I come back!"
Jia blinked at him, seeing an abrupt restlessness in his gaze.
"Why?"
Mingshen couldn’t answer.
"I mean I am your partner!" He pouted. "How can you leave your partner out of your investigation?"
"This is not a forensic investigation."
"Did I ever care about that?"
Jia leaned back against the railing and stared at him.
"Are you okay?"
He grinned. "Of course!"
"No, you are not. Why do you always strangely get so apprehensive whenever it’s about the Zhuo family? I have noticed this a few times and I think I have asked you this before."
"I just generally don’t like political families. They are too full of themselves."
Are you in any position to say that?
"No, but you don’t seem so agitated around the Hou family."
His brow twitched for a moment but he let out a lazy laugh. "They are equally that hateful."
Jia squinted her eyes, which for some reason Mingshen couldn’t look into. Though she wanted to know further, she thought it was for the best to not pry upon anymore for now.
I never thought that even Mingshen had secrets of his own...
He always seems like an open book with nothing to hide.
Just at that moment, a message bubble popped up on top of her phone screen and her expression changed.
"Who is it?" Mingshen blinked.
"Nothing really..." she sighed. "Just some of my high school friends are trying to drag me to the reunion party."
His eyes widened and he gasped dramatically.
"You cannot betray me like this Spicy! How can you be partying without me around?" He sniffled.
"What’s the problem in that?"
She saw Mingshen walk over to his room’s balcony and lean against the railing.
"Parties are full of drama, especially the so-called reunion parties," he sneered. "Utterly useless. People only care about exaggerating their successful love and career life, which mind you, are just pitiful heaps of failures."
"That’s harsh."
"Reality never comes with a band-aid."
Fair point.
"So will you be going?"
She smiled. "Not really. I was a loner in high school anyway."
He blinked rapidly, the fact not registering in his mind.
"Loner? Why? Shouldn’t you be super popular?"
"Why popular? I am average."
"You are sexy."
"..."
Mingshen’s shock deepened with her silence.
"Were the highschool boys your time utter fools? I was sure you were a diva of your campus! I thought your locker box was filled with love letters and you got tons of confessions in the school’s backyard. Girls would be jealous of you and try to bully you but Spicy being Spicy, threw it right back at them," he nodded.
She was dumbfounded. "Are you sure you are talking about me or...your own high school days?"
"Shouldn’t it be similar?" He frowned.
"..."
"Yeah, I will hang up now," she smiled. "Any more and it will be an overdose of Yang Mingshen for me."
He sheepishly grinned. "Yours is the only overdose that wouldn’t kill me~"
She hung up without a second thought and rolled her eyes.
He is totally crazy!
She saw another message bubble popup with Minmin urging her yet again to join the reunion party.
Ugh...This is getting awkward...
She scratched her chin thoughtfully.
Should I just do a quick trip for an hour and return? She will finally quiet down.
Jia typed back.
’Fine. I will be there. But I can only be present for an hour or so. Work calls.’
’Yay, thanks a ton Jia! It will be super fun I promise!’ Minmin replied with a wide grin emoji.
’Cool.’
Jia lazily stretched her arms.
"Maybe it wouldn’t be so bad getting some break after all," she murmured to herself.
