As Jia reached the bureau the next day, she got a surprise with a few people already waiting for her, who happened to be none other than her high school classmates.

"Jia!" A woman excitedly raised her hand towards her.

Jia’s eyes slightly widened, slowly pausing her pace. "Minmin."

She gasped. "You recognized me?"

"Of course I did. It’s not like you did plastic surgery."

"But it’s been ten years. I look so different now. Hell you look so different! I didn’t even recognize you! Look at those muscles."

"A cop’s life is dangerous. We need all the strength we can."

"That’s true."

Minmin was accompanied by another high school friend who belonged to a different class.

"Hey Jia, did you forget about me?" He smiled.

"Hanjun," Jia smiled back. "The troublemaker of the basketball team."

"I have changed now."

"If your girlfriend attests to that then I might believe you."

They looked taken aback. "How do you..."

"You are kidding, right?" Jia was dumbfounded. "Your ’couply’ aura is all too visible. Plus, you two always had a thing for each other back then. It isn’t so surprising."

Minmin stared at her. "But I never told anybody about my crush. Not even to my best friends."

"You don’t need to always tell something for others to understand. Your actions speak a lot. I kind of guessed," she shrugged. "Then I guessed that Hanjun liked you too but neither of you confessed."

The couple looked visibly shocked. "You are amazing!"

"Please don’t think of me as some amazing detective," Jia grimaced. "Decoding your feelings was hardly a challenge. I wondered how your friends never did. Anyway, what brings you here?"

"High school reunion!" They brightened.

"We have been continuously messaging in the group and almost everybody has answered except you. So we came here to personally invite you!"

Jia smiled. "Thanks for the invitation but I am afraid I won’t be able to come. You guys enjoy it."

"What?" Minmin gasped. "Why can you not come? It’s after ten years we are meeting everyone."

"I am working on an important case so-"

"But cases never end," she pouted. "Work will go on, right? We are also doing jobs and have a mountain of work but are still coming. Please, please, pretty please. It’s just one evening. We will have so much fun."

Hanjun added to her support. "Yup, Minmin is right. It’s only one evening. I am sure you can keep the work aside for a few hours. Everybody is going to be there."

Jia felt troubled. "I...I will think about it. But I am not giving you any promises."

"Yay! Don’t worry. I will keep bugging you until you agree~" Minmin winked. "We won’t let you off so easily."

Once they left the bureau, Huojin peeked out from behind a pillar and quietly approached Jia, holding his hands behind his back.

"Tell me again. Who were they?"

She turned and said, "Some classmates from my highschool year batch."

He blinked twice. "Aaaaand why are they so excited to invite you for a reunion party? As far as my database goes, weren’t you a loner in highschool?"

Her brow twitched. "Your database has some unnecessary information stored in it."

"Unnecessary for you but accurate for me. You were pretty much a loner so I was wondering who are these people suddenly acting so chummy towards you? Why are they insisting so much on your presence?"

"It’s been ten years."

"All the more reason to ignore a loner. You are not exactly the light and shine of the party anyway."

"You don’t mince your words at all, do you?"

He shone with pride. "Learned this art from a best friend of mine who is standing right before me. Anyway, will you be going?"

She shrugged. "Nope. I could hardly gel with my classmates back then. It’s even more of a Mount Everest task for me."

He placed a karate chop on her head.

"Hey!"

"Don’t hey me!" Huojin glared. "Are you an idiot? If you are not the light and shine of the party now, then you should BECOME the light and shine of the party. You don’t understand these dynamics at all. You should be making them regretful and rub all the spice on their faces for ignoring you ten years ago. You show how hot and sexy and appealing you are."

Jia looked at him, speechless. "Why are you so triggered?"

"It triggers me to know that those idiot classmates never understood your importance. Don’t you watch dramas?"

He raised his arms, acting as if holding a camera.

"You get the drift. You have to become that sort of a person! Oh, oh! You can even pretend to be Yang Mingshen’s wife! Oh my God, that would be soooo much worth watching. Imagine the look on those women’s faces. First you are an independent, hot, sexy and responsible cop with a great career and then you are also Dr. Yang’s wife. Do you know how much damage you will cause to their poor hearts?"

"You are very excited about this."

"I love face-slapping scenes," he sheepishly grinned.

She rolled her eyes.

"How about we work on exposing the culprits of this case rather than my highschool classmates?"

He clicked his tongue in distaste. "You don’t have any sense of drama, do you? I am sure if Mingshen had been here, he would have been all over you attending this party in the sexiest outfit possible. He would have barged in as your self-proclaimed husband too."

Her brow twitched.

"How much is he missing you already?"

"He called me at 1 AM to show a live video of Big Ben."

He shook his head. "So this is what being crazy in love looks like."
