Chapter 353: Sparring with emotions (2)

Jia gasped as he pulled her forward, her balance slipping for just a second. But that second was all he needed. Mingshen twisted, using his strength to throw her off her feet.

Jia barely managed to brace herself, landing with a sharp thud against the matted floor. Before she could recover, he was already moving, pinning her wrist down with one hand while his other hovered near her throat, just a hair’s breadth away from a decisive victory to push her towards the punching bag.

"Got you," he murmured, eyes gleaming with triumph.

Jia’s gaze darkened. "Not yet."

Before he could tighten his hold, she bucked her hips and twisted her wrist in one sharp movement, breaking free from his grip. Mingshen grunted as she used her legs to push him off her, flipping their positions in a heartbeat. Now she was on top, her knee pressing against his chest, one arm twisted behind his back.

His smirk widened. "Not bad."

She exhaled, catching her breath. "You were saying?"

Instead of answering, Mingshen suddenly relaxed, his body going limp beneath her. Jia was slightly taken aback but that moment of uncertainty was golden for him. With a swift motion, he rolled his body, using the shift in weight to slip free from her hold.

Jia cursed as she found herself on her back again with Mingshen hovering above her, trapping her wrists against the mat. Their faces were close - too close. She could feel his breath, steady and unhurried and his expression far too smug for her liking.

"You hesitate, Spicy~," he mused, tilting his head slightly. "That’s your problem."

She scowled. "I don’t hesitate."

"Hesitation stems from having too many doubts, my dear. Which makes me wonder if you are beginning to have doubts on your career choice?"

Annoyance sparked in her chest. With a sharp exhale, she shifted her weight and brought her knee up fast. Mingshen barely dodged in time, rolling to the side before she could land a solid hit.

"Whoa there," he chuckled, releasing her as he leaned back on his hands. "No need to get so violent, Spicy."

Jia shot him a glare as she sat up, brushing loose strands of hair from her face.

"I am not having any doubts on my career choice."

They squared up again, facing each other, determined to win. Their bodies were tense, their fists ready to strike. But with their equally matched strength and stubbornness, neither was going to make this easy.

Mingshen let out a low chuckle, cracking his neck. "Be honest, Spicy. How did it feel to learn that side of your law enforcement which you were turning a blind eye to all this time?"

She lunged without a warning. She closed the distance in a blink, slamming her hands against his chest with all the force she could muster. Mingshen stumbled back a step, but he planted his feet firmly before she could gain more ground.

"You were itching to rub that on my face all this time, weren’t you?" Jia gritted her teeth, small drops of sweat forming on her forehead.

His hands shot out, gripping her waist. In a swift move, he twisted, using her own momentum to turn her sideways.

He smiled. "I cannot deny that allegation but only because I was interested to see your response."

Jia clenched her jaw, adjusting quickly. She dug her heels into the mat, pushing back with all her strength.

Mingshen faltered as he felt himself being forced back. He let go of her waist and tried to shift his weight, but Jia was relentless. She pressed forward, her palms flat against his shoulders and every muscle in her body straining as she drove him toward the boundary line.

"My response? What do you think my response will be? No matter who is involved, I will shed light upon everything!"

"Forgetting that you are ultimately just a puppet of the higher ups too?" His eyes narrowed.

Her gaze darkened. "Who are you calling a puppet?"

"You might think of yourself as a free bird but your higher ups certainly don’t. Just like they didn’t think of Mr. Lingyun as one," his eyes twinkled.

In one explosive motion, he dropped his center of gravity and wrapped an arm around her waist again, this time lifting her slightly off the ground. Jia yelped as he spun them around, reversing their positions in a blink.

Jia growled, locking her legs around his. Before he could push her back, she clasped her hands together and struck his back. Her knuckles carried the weight of her rage as she recalled Si Yu’s misty and sorrowful gaze. She bit her lip hard, thinking back to the injustices that Lingyun had to face and the harassment that Si Yu went through to protect her son.

It threw Mingshen off balance and they staggered dangerously close to the edge, bodies tangled, neither willing to let go.

For a moment, they were locked in a standstill, both pushing with all their strength. Sweat trickled down their skin, breaths mingling as they stared each other down.

"I won’t become a puppet," Jia snarled in determination. "And neither would I be taken down so easily. Over my dead body!"

With a final surge of energy, Jia shoved forward. Mingshen’s foot slipped - just a fraction. But it was enough. He lost his footing and stumbled upon the treadmill floor, taking Jia on a falling ride along with him.

Jia blinked. "Did I just..."

Mingshen exhaled, staring around at the treadmill. To her surprise, he chuckled. "You won."

He rested his arms on her shoulders and pulled her closer. "Just like how you will win against those crooked losers."

Her eyes lingered on him, unreadable yet piercing.

He smiled. "Don’t worry about going down. Your handsome husband is right beside you~ My shiny scalpel would be right through their throats before they even begin to think about being naughty towards you. So you better put up a good fight, Spicy. You have to show them what your side of law and justice looks like."
