Chapter 348: Huayuan (18)

Si Yu was sitting on a bench, wobbling with slight drunkenness as she sipped onto her wine. The martial arts competitions were still ongoing with cheers and whistles reverberating in the air.

"I know it is the festival but aren’t you drinking a bit too much?"

Si Yu hiccuped and looked up. Her face brightened. "Madam Ian!"

Madam Ian sat beside her with her fan covering her face as usual, yet she exuded an unmistakable elegance.

"Should I pour some wine for you *hiccup*?"

"No, thank you."

She pouted. "Why not? It’s festivals like these that make it so fun to drink."

"You should be drinking some tea instead of that wine, Madam Si. You are going to get a terrible headache tomorrow morning," she replied with an unhurried poise.

"Hehe...It’s good if I get a headache. *hiccup*" her eyes shone with a strange mistiness.

Madam Ian remained quiet.

Because it doesn’t let you think about him...

She said after a few moments, "I met a strange young man today."

Si Yu beamed. "Oh is that so?"

"Yes. He is a little timid but he is really strong. He saved Xiao Lei from a rude customer today."

"Oh my! You know what? I also met a young couple today! *Hic* They were so adorable hehe..." Si Yu sheepishly and drunkenly grinned. "That man loves her so much. I saw his eyes following her everywhere. So adorable..."

"Miss. Si!"

Si Yu slightly jolted and looked back. She stared at Jia with a flushed face. Her intoxication made her see a different person in front of her.

"Ling...Lingyun...?"

Jia stared back at her, standing straight in her police uniform. Before rushing out to meet Si Yu, she had changed back to wearing her uniform. She couldn’t understand why she felt the need to do that, but it simply felt right to her.

Behind Jia followed Mingshen and Bojing as well.

"Spicy, you should warn me next time when you run off like that," he complained.

"S-sis, what happened...?"

Madam Ian was puzzled at the two strangers suddenly appearing before them but upon seeing Bojing, her gaze slightly changed, filled with an unmistakable light.

"Oh, we meet again."

Bojing blinked at her and beamed. "H-Hello!"

A bright smile lit up on Si Yu’s lips as she reached out to hold Jia’s hand. "Y-You came back, Lingyun *hic*?"

Jia watched her dainty, quivering hand lightly tugging her fingers. She slowly took her hand in hers and sat down beside her.

"Miss. Si."

Bojing’s eyes slightly widened.

Is she Si Yu?

Jia watched her beautiful face marred with a sense of profound sadness and longing. Her misty eyes stabbed her heart mercilessly.

Everybody’s attention at the plaza suddenly turned towards them. The residents of Huayuan especially hushed urgent whispers, making Mingshen wonder. He remembered that the same crowd had looked oddly at them when they had first arrived at the plaza too even though Jia wasn’t in her cop uniform. But now that Jia was in her uniform, the gazes turned even more intense.

"Lingyun...?" Si Yu rubbed her eyes a bit and the blurry image cleared.

She then beamed. "Oh it’s you!"

It was only for half a second but Jia caught how Si Yu looked as if her heart sank upon realizing her mistake.

"Oh my, you are not wearing the Hanfu anymore..." she blinked. "Did you *hic* not like it?"

Jia warmly smiled. "I loved it. It’s the most beautiful dress I ever wore."

She blushed. "Hehe..."

"I wore my uniform back because I wanted you to see for who I am."

"Hm?" She tilted her head.

"I..." Jia’s voice shook as her gaze blurred. "I am sorry Miss. Si."

Mingshen watched Jia in silence as he stood behind her.

"I am sorry for...what you had to go through because of the police officers thirteen years ago."

Madam Ian slightly narrowed her eyes.

Si Yu looked at her and burst into a chuckle. "Aiyaaa...*hic* Why are you apologizing to me, dear? It wasn’t you who did it to me."

"But it is the system that I am a part of which did it to you. Law and order is supposed to safeguard the citizens, not oppress them," her voice slightly choked. "I...I am really sorry that Mr. Lingyun was wrongfully arrested. I am sorry that you tried to fight for him but we failed you. We failed you miserably. I don’t have any excuses to give for the things that happened to you or the people living here."

She slightly squeezed her frail hand, a light of cold and steely resolution reflecting in her eyes.

"But I will do everything in my power to get Mr. Lingyun out."

She froze.

"I advise you to say your words carefully, Inspector," Madam Ian quietly said, "Empty promises hurt the most. At this stage of her life, Si Yu doesn’t need that."

"It is not an empty promise," Jia said plainly. "I don’t blame you for being unable to trust me. That is why I will prove it with my actions. I...will reopen Miss. Nuwa’s case."

The older generation of Huayuan standing nearby visibly gasped.

"It might seem impossible after thirteen years, but I will do it Miss. Si. I won’t let you and Mr. Lingyun suffer for any longer. I..." a tear slipped out of her eye. "I am really sorry. You shouldn’t have suffered. Neither Miss. Nuwa or Miss. Ruolan. Nobody."

Si Yu stared at Jia in a daze. A smile came to her lips.

"Ah...you talk just like Lingyun hehe..." her eyelashes were moist with tears. "You look very handsome in the uniform. Just like he used to *hic*"

Jia pressed her lips hard, trying hard to not let her tears flow.

"Lingyun looked so good in the uniform. His eyes were like yours too...Honest and determined hehe..." she laughed drunkenly but with pain seeping into every corner of her heart.

"His determination gave me the strength to fight for the first time thirteen years ago. But I failed him...I failed my son too..."

Jia clenched her fists.

"But if you think that you can bring a change *hic*...if you can give us closure about what happened with Nuwa, then I will help you. I lost the evidence but I do know from Lingyun that either one of the two families were involved with Nuwa’s disappearance. The Zhuo family or the Hou family."
