Chapter 310: Meeting the Zhuos’ (2)

"That was strange..."

Jia muttered as they headed out.

"They called us all the way in to tell us that we cannot meet Zhuo Syaoran? They could have easily conveyed that through the guard, right?"

She heard no response from Mingshen, making her turn back.

"Are you okay?"

Mingshen smiled. "Why would I not be okay?"

She paused and reflected on the past. "Did something happen between your families in the past?"

He stopped and looked at her.

"You always get so strangely...grim when Zhuo Syaoran is mentioned. Even now as you talked to his parents, the air felt so chilly and uncomfortable."

He put his hands in his pockets and shrugged. "Nothing really."

Jia highly doubted the authenticity of his answer. For some reason, her heart sensed a faint distance he subtly and probably unconsciously created.

He chirped. "We can leave now, right? Meeting them was so boring."

A trail of footsteps made Jia crane her neck at the back and she saw Zhuo Zihan coming towards them. His fast strides gradually slowed down and he came to a stop. He alternated his gaze between Jia and Mingshen in silence.

Jia said, "I am sorry. I came at the wrong time. I didn’t know your brother was sick."

"His health is indeed delicate."

"I am sorry..."

"He likes flowers though. He likes gardening."

She blinked once.

Why is he telling me that?

She looked around and asked, "Oh so your brother tends to this garden? It’s really pretty."

He stared at her, expressionless. "Not this garden."

"Huh?"

"Have a nice day."

He passed from beside her in silence, ending their conversation right there.

Jia was left puzzled and confused.

Isn’t this the only garden here?

She looked at Mingshen questioningly. "Did you understand what he meant?"

"Not interested to know."

"You have no sense of curiosity at all, do you? Huojin would have already been hopping around by now."

It wasn’t intentional from her side to compare them, but it suddenly lit up the bulb of realization in Mingshen’s head.

Damn.

So these are the things that make that ok ok boyfriend superior and reliable than me? Curiosity? A sense of mystery?

Mingshen frowned.

I am a curious person too. Isn’t that why I built my lab?

He cleared his throat. "It’s indeed strange."

"You are suddenly interested now?"

"Spicy’s interest is my interest~"

They walked around the garden a little, admiring the beautiful flowers on their way.

"The gardener is really doing a good job."

Mingshen muttered with disdain. "Pretty only on the outside. Ugly through and through."

"What did you say?"

"Nothing."

Jia let out a sigh.

Mingshen is acting strange today...

She focused on her current task and thought back to Zhuo Zihan’s words.

Not this garden...

So there is a second garden somewhere.

They walked quite a lot but apart from the garden and the backyard, they couldn’t find anything else. Certainly not a second garden. Jia leaned against the tall brick wall for a short break that served as the Zhuo mansion’s boundary.

"I guess we have to drop by later-"

Her eyes blinked rapidly, noticing an oddity. She squinted her eyes to get a better look. "Is this wall broken over there?"

Mingshen casually walked where she pointed and noticed the same oddity. An inch of the brick wall faced ajar, outward towards him in a strange manner.

Jia stood beside him and took a closer look. "It’s broken in a very odd way..."

Mingshen tilted his head, staring at it. "I don’t think it’s broken."

He jammed his fingers in the narrow space and pulled it further towards him. The wall moved with that force, making Jia’s eyes widen.

"Is this...a door?"

"Secret door~"

It was hard to keep pulling the heavy brick wall and make enough space for them to pass through it, but Mingshen eventually managed it. Jia ducked a bit lower, her upper body partially going through the other side. Her lips parted in surprise, finding altogether a new world beyond the wall.

They stepped over to the other side with Jia marveling at the new garden like foyer before her. Lush green trees towered high above them and beautiful, colorful blooming flowers greeted her view in the vast expanse. Mingshen observed the same new information but without much change in his expression.

There was a rough, narrow grassy path which wasn’t too produced to be called a proper pathway. Jia took slow steps, absorbing the new environment around her. The garden on this side of the wall was maintained very differently than the main mansion’s garden.

There were quite a few species of flowers and plants she had never seen before. Butterflies fluttered their wings on top of the flower petals as they sucked in their nectar.

"Is this also a part of the Zhuo mansion?"

"Who knows..." Mingshen murmured to himself.

It was similar to how his lab was separated from the Yang family’s mansion. In the same space but different worlds altogether.

They reached the end of that grassy path that opened into a wide stretch of an expanse. At the farther side was a farmhouse-like villa behind all the greenery and the natural beauty.

Then Jia saw at a distance.

A man in a wheelchair was near some bushes, sprinkling water on the leaves with a water can. Small birds and butterflies flew around him and the nearby trees.

Zhuo Syaoran suddenly paused his movements as if he sensed something. He sat straight and turned his head towards their side. His eyelids blinked rapidly as if he wasn’t able to believe what he was seeing.

He kept the watering can aside and pressed a button on his wheelchair to start wheeling himself towards them. Jia walked towards him with Mingshen following her with slow steps.

Jia’s lips parted in shock as they met face-to-face. "You...were here?"

Zhuo Syaoran tilted his head. "Actually, I should be asking you this question, Inspector Song. How did you find your way here?"
