Chapter 308: Li Beiye’s intentions
Jia had her arms folded by the time Huojin was done explaining the entire part of how he was working together with Beiye.
"I cannot believe this! Beiye...is a part of She?"
Huojin promptly wheeled his chair away from Jia but she wheeled it back towards her with glaring eyes.
"W-Well I thought that instead of taking her into custody, it was better that she acted as a double agent!"
"You...How could you not tell me about her? The cult members are all evading us and here we had one right in front of our eyes."
"S-Sorry, but I swear it’s all for the sake of our investigation!"
"How do you know that we could even trust her?" Jia was flabbergasted. "And did you forget about those mysterious chips in the tattoos through which the leader somehow tracks their members?"
"I do remember that and I had asked Beiye about it too. Obviously, I wrote it and asked in case our conversation was being listened to. But she assured me that we were safe."
Jia grimaced. "How do you trust her so much?"
"Because she is good with computers. She knew about the chip so she said she keeps a device with her that quietly disrupts the signal when she wants. Plus, she works with Zexi at Quantum Games, so I believe some merit in her talent."
Jia’s eyes narrowed. "You mean to say she is a part of that cult but will work as a double agent for us? Doesn’t this feel like her way of evading jail time?"
Huojin cleared his throat. "I know it’s hard to trust her right now and it’s not like I have dropped all my guard either. I am also testing the waters. But I thought having her on our side would be beneficial."
"She could double cross us."
Huojin replied. "She could and if she does and it brings us face-to-face with the leader again or any other important cult member, then it will come to our advantage only."
Mingshen smiled. "You seem to have a lot of confidence in that young lady."
"I think she is our ally, not our enemy."
"That’s a LOT of confidence."
"Not baseless though. You explained about the neural feedback and it reminded me of that evening Beiye and I were together playing Survival Grounds. I noticed her uncomfortable after we ended playing. She was rubbing her temples and she just shrugged it off saying that it was a mild headache. She felt a little disoriented to me too. But she was fine before."
Zhang Feiyu softly gasped. "Is it because of the game?"
"Hard to say."
Mingshen tilted his head. "Did you not feel any pain?"
"No. I felt fine."
He seemed to then dive into his own thoughts.
"The other reason why I am leaning towards believing her is her purpose."
Jia blinked. "Her purpose?"
He nodded. "We know what She is capable of. But I don’t think she holds the same mindset as these creeps. So why is she in the cult? I kind of tapped into her background to find any hint. She lives with her father and younger teen brother. Her mother passed away when she was young."
"And?"
"Her younger brother, Li Bao, was often getting into fights and skipping classes. I found one complaint in our database. He and some other classmates were caught fighting in a cafe and that officer in charge recorded it. They were let off with a warning after he talked to their families."
"What does this have to do with Li Beiye joining the cult?"
"Some eight months ago or so, Li Bao was admitted to the hospital. He suddenly collapsed is all I know. I couldn’t find more detailed medical records. But what I do know is that he still hasn’t regained his consciousness."
Her eyes slightly widened.
"...Does he play Survival Grounds?"
"I guess so. I had casually approached one of the kids from his high school one day. He had heard about the cafe fight and from the rumors, it suggested that they were shouting about some game quest. The fight broke out because apparently, the other kids group had dumped Li Bao out of their battle team and he flew into a rage."
Mingshen asked, "Which hospital?"
"Lifecare Hospital."
"A hospital we oversee. I will get the records," his eyes glinted with curiosity, "I wonder what could cause a healthy teen to suddenly collapse?"
Jia stared at Huojin. "You are not suggesting that Li Beiye infiltrated She to find out more about this game?"
Huojin scratched his chin. "That’s what my best guess is."
"If it’s true then this is foolish. She doesn’t understand how dangerous these people are. If she doubts that Survival Grounds is behind this, then this is not the way. She is only risking her life."
"I will get a solid confirmation on my theory and work from there. If Li Bao’s medical records suggest that his current condition has something to do with the game, then Li Beiye’s intentions would become clearer. I will see how to approach her from there."
She shook her head. "We have to do it fast. This is not something a civilian should be getting involved in."
Zhang Feiyu then stood up. "I will take my leave. This is all I wanted to show. I still think that Luqi must have some more information but kept it somewhere else. I will try to find it the best I can."
"No, no. This is more than enough help, Mr. Zhang. We will submit your wife’s laptop to our cyber security team. Maybe they would find something more. We just want you to focus on your wife and leave the investigation to us. Things could get dangerous."
He pursed his lips. He wanted to be of more help but protecting Zhang Luqi was important too.
Huojin smiled. "Don’t worry. Two officers will always keep a watch on your home and at the hospital."
He bowed. "Thank you so much."
Jia released a sigh leaning back on her chair. "Things finally feel like they are moving today."
She threw Huojin a glare. "I will deal with you later!"
Huojin coughed and wheeled his chair away again.
Mingshen had a thought and grinned.
A cup of coffee from the handsome devil will cheer up Spicy, right~?
Huojin asked a question to divert the topic from his beating, "Well, I will watch over Beiye but what about Yong? Are you giving up on her search?"
Jia pressed her lips. "I don’t want to but Commissioner Zhong won’t agree to approach Huayuan until there is solid evidence of her involvement. Like a witness who also saw-"
Jia suddenly and abruptly stood upright on her chair, gasping in disbelief.
"How could I forget!?"
"Forget what?" Huojin’s eyes slightly widened.
"There is another witness! He had crashed into Yong when I was chasing after her. Maybe he would have clearly seen her face when her mask fell. I should visit Mr. Zhuo Syaoran and ask him!"
Mingshen, who just stood up to bring coffee for Jia, stiffened in his place. He stared at her.
"You will be...visiting the Zhuo residence?"
