The Devil Doctor's Spicy Love -
Chapter 293: Warning
Chapter 293: Warning
At the same time in hospital, Meng Rin stood before Hou Tengqi’s ward, steeling her nerves for what was to come. Talking to Bai Caishen gave the tiny sprout of courage she needed to end things with him.
She took a deep breath and walked in. She saw Hou Tengqi busy on his phone. He lifted his gaze up and stared at her. "Rinrin. You are finally here. I thought you forgot about me."
She clutched her purse and hesitantly stood beside him. She tried to bring in a smile. "Of-of course not. How are you feeling now?"
"I am recovering as you can see. So I thought I would feel good but actually I am super pissed off."
Her breath got stuck in her throat. "Why...?"
Hou Tengqi held her wrist and pulled her towards him with a smile.
"How would you feel if the man who almost put you into a coma is still roaming around freely as if he did nothing wrong?"
She stiffened.
"Imagine my shock to see that the man who banged my head against the wall and who you cheated on me with is still out and free."
Her expression paled. "I...I never cheated on you...! I a-also told this that night a-and..."
"I should trust you? Tell me Rinrin. How should I trust you when..." his grip tightened on her wrist, bringing a small, painful gasp to her lips.
"When you betrayed me? You were insisting that nothing happened between you two. I wanted to believe in you but then I heard that you stood up for that same man’s defense in front of everybody. Nanyou and everybody else saw him on top of you when they broke in. He made me invalid on purpose so that he could assault you and you...tried to protect him?" He tilted his head with an unforgiving glint in his eyes.
Meng Rin was at a loss for words. Now that he twisted the situation in such a way, it would look to anybody as if she had truly lost her mind by wanting to protect Bai Yingtai.
His nails almost dug into her skin, bringing tears to her eyes. "I am here because of him and my own fiance spoke up for the man who brought me here? So tell me Rinrin, how should I trust you? Why would you do this to me?"
"I-I..." her voice had now reduced to a hoarse, "I just...I-It was truly a misunderstanding-"
"Me being in a hospital is a misunderstanding for you?"
She froze.
"Can you not see the bandages around my head or are you pretending to not see it?"
Meng Rin breathed hard with the pressure mounting on her wrist. She didn’t dare to meet his gaze.
"It’s not like that..."
"So why would you try to save a man who, according to you, barged into your room without your permission and even slept on your bed as if it was his own, hit my head on the wall and then tried to assault you?"
He smiled with a malevolent tinge at the corner of his lips. "It almost makes me think that you are here to break up with me and go that man?"
Her mind felt blank to her. It had taken an immense amount of courage for her to face Hou Tengqi, but just a few words from mouth doused that determination into resignation.
She couldn’t say it. She tried hard but the words had lost their way.
"But that cannot be true, right? I have shown nothing but love to you so of course, you wouldn’t return my feelings with a cruel betrayal. Right?"
Tears plopped down her cheeks, seeing the redness spread on her hand with the pain.
His eyes widened and he quickly released her wrist. "Hey, hey, don’t cry Rinrin. I am sorry if I was too harsh. It’s just that Bai Yingtai’s bail isn’t sitting well with me at all and I need to do something about it."
She froze.
"But until I do something about it, there is this pent up anger within me. And then it doesn’t help to know that you weren’t a supportive fiance when I needed you," he sighed.
He smiled and held her cheek. "But it’s alright. If you promise me that you won’t repeat this again, then I will forgive you and everything can go back to how it is. Nothing has changed, right?"
—
Meng Rin exited the hospital in a daze. She covered her wrist with a scarf and gently rubbed it to ease the pain. She stared down at the ground, tears threatening to spill again.
She didn’t know what she was supposed to do. With the way things went today, she found no hope to ever escape from Hou Tengqi. The mere thought of saying it to him terrified her.
She shuddered. She strangely felt as if Hou Tengqi already had an inkling as to what she wanted to say. So everything he said was like a subtle warning to never broach the subject of a breakup again, not even in her mind.
Am I...bound to him forever now?
She pressed her lips inwardly, trying hard not to break down. Her phone then buzzed and she stiffened, thinking that it might be Bai Caishen asking if she ended it with Hou Tengqi.
What should I tell him? I-I don’t want him to confront Tengqi...Tengqi would misunderstand our relationship and...
She was too afraid to even imagine the consequences. Her face paled as white as a ghost.
She checked her messages but to her surprise, it wasn’t from Bai Caishen. But it was a number she was all too familiar with.
’You have missed your last two appointments. That is not good. It will hamper your treatment.’
Meng Rin stared at the message, unable to comprehend it.
’We have always talked on the phone but I think it’s very useful if I treat you face to face. Can you hop by Boss’s lab today? My schedule is free for the day.’
Then a third ding came.
’My schedule is almost always free by the way.’
Then a fourth ding rang.
’Oh by Boss I mean Dr. Yang Mingshen.’
Meng Rin still couldn’t understand.
After everything that has happened, Dr. Bai is asking me to still come and meet him for my appointments?
