Chapter 287: Old pictures

Jia smiled. "I am finding my way to Aunt’s room, not yours. So hold your horses a bit."

"How can I when we have gotten so close~?" His eyes twinkled with mischief. "Especially today."

Jia took a deep breath and maintained her calm. "It’s alright, Mingshen. I have already reached zen mode by now. No matter how much you tease and remind me of what happened today, it’s not going to affect me."

He blinked twice. "Preposterous. Forgetting Yang Mingshen’s kisses is like forgetting we need oxygen to breathe."

Her brow twitched. She decided to ignore him and turned the other way when her gaze fell on the locked door again.

"Isn’t it a little strange to have a locked room in the middle of the corridor like this?"

She moved her gaze to Mingshen who smiled at her. "Not really."

Her brows slightly furrowed.

"Are you curious to know what’s inside?"

She coughed. Being a cop, it was just in her nature to question the oddities and have answers.

"...A little," she murmured to herself and couldn’t help but keep glancing at the room. But she refrained from asking.

She turned to leave again when she felt her wrist being pulled backwards. She looked back to see Mingshen holding onto it and staring at her with an unreadable expression. He stood there in silence.

She blinked once and asked, "You want to say something?"

Mingshen parted his lips once as if something was just on the tip of his tongue. Then he smiled. "Go back to your room. Mom is not going to entertain your request. She is a sly woman. She is already pretending to be dead asleep at this point."

"..."

"Might as well just accept your fate and stay the night," he paused, "I don’t mind if it’s with me."

She shook off her hand from his and slightly glared. But she also got the feeling that it might be impossible to go back now. She released a sigh.

Ah this...

Mingshen tilted his head. "It’s just one night. What’s the big deal?"

She slightly stiffened. "I just don’t like causing inconvenience."

"Which part of my Mom’s zestiness tonight did you see that made you think that?"

She didn’t answer.

He gave a small smile. "Or is it that you have gotten so used to your lonely home that the thought of living with somebody else, even for a night, scares you?"

She froze.

"It feels so nice and warm to live in a family. And then it becomes so hard to go back to the place where you will be all alone again. Isn’t it the same reason why you refused to stay at the Zhao villa when little chili asked you?"

She balled her fists, her jaw clenching her teeth hard.

"You...why do you always say such things?"

Mingshen stared at her. "Because you are always thinking of such things. I will talk about them because that’s what you need."

"I don’t need it."

"You assume a lot of things, my dear."

Jia took sharp and large strides and passed by him with a look of frustration, back towards her own room. Mingshen simply smiled and let her go.

He glanced at the locked room and held his gaze at it for a moment. Then he walked away for the night.

Jia woke up in the middle of the night with a gasp. She got up tiredly, rubbing her aching forehead. She was trying hard to sleep but it was as if sleep was making her its enemy.

She stepped out of her room for a short walk, wiping the corner of her eyes. At around two in the morning, the Yang mansion was absolutely silent.

She put her hands behind her back and walked aimlessly, her heart speeding fast for some reason. She felt afraid of something approaching her but she didn’t know what it was.

Jia climbed down the stairs and was taken aback to see Yang Cheng seated on the couch, holding something like a book in his hands.

He is awake at this hour?

She wasn’t sure if she should greet him or not. She didn’t want to disturb whatever he was doing. But Yang Cheng felt somebody’s presence and he turned.

"You," he blinked once.

She quickly said, "I am sorry for disturbing you. I didn’t know you were here."

"You hardly made any sound so how would you disturb me?"

"..."

"You are not getting sleep," he stated.

Jia awkwardly said, "Just a little bit."

Yang Cheng paused. Then he looked at her. "Is it because your house is too comfortable or too lonely?"

She stiffened and didn’t know how to respond. He was talking the same things as Mingshen, albeit in a different sense.

D-Did Mingshen say anything to him...? She grew more and more anxious. She didn’t want the whole world to speculate her mental state.

Yang Cheng asked quietly, "You want to join me?"

"Huh? For what?"

Jia saw him extending a picture album. "Oh, pictures!"

She walked towards him and slowly sat beside him with a little hesitation. She hadn’t really talked a lot with Yang Cheng before.

She glanced at the pictures and smiled. "It’s so nostalgic to see an album’s hard copy. Nowadays, everything is digital."

"Hm."

He turned a page that showed a new set of pictures. Jia took a look and saw a picture of a young man in his early twenties. He was definitely Mingshen which was what Jia concluded.

"...Are these Mingshen’s college time pictures?"

"No. Mine," he replied.

Jia’s eyes widened. She looked at the photo till her eyes ached and she couldn’t help but say, "But he looks so much...like Mingshen..."

"He is my son. It’s genetics."

Her mouth twitched.

The resemblance is so uncanny that it’s frightening!

But then again, the young Yang Cheng didn’t hold any expression in the photo so she surmised that he couldn’t be Mingshen. If it was Mingshen, he would have posed with his irksome and narcissistic grin for sure.

She noticed one picture where another young man had wrapped his arms around Yang Cheng’s shoulder with a grin.

"Is he your friend?"

Yang Cheng glanced at the picture and said after some pause, "Yes. He was my roommate in the medical college we studied at abroad. Xie Zi Han."
