Chapter 247: The She Gathering Arc (17)

"You..."

Jia recognized the man in the wheelchair. She wished she could stop and talk but from the corner of her eye, she noticed the leader’s assistant making a dash for the exit once again. But to her shock, she also saw something she hadn’t expected to see.

The collision with the man on the wheelchair caused the wig to fall off the young man’s head. The long hair that were hidden inside the wig flowed till the woman’s back.

Jia’s eyes widened.

She was a woman this whole time?

The young man - or the woman - looked back in frustration at the man because of whom she stumbled. But a moment later, she frowned and her displeasure dissipated.

By that point, Jia got a partial look at her face as bumping into the man had also caused her mask to slip sideways a bit. It hung from the side but before Jia could get a clearer look, the woman turned her face away and sprinted again.

Wait isn’t she...?

Everything happened in a matter of a few seconds and Jia found herself chasing after the woman again.

"Talk to you later!" she said to the man in the wheelchair.

"We will," he smiled.

She felt a little strange but didn’t let it bother her that much. She dashed outside too, something gnawing Jia’s mind.

It cannot be...

"I will shoot you if you don’t stop!"

"Your sexy dress doesn’t have any place to hide your gun," a chuckle came from the woman. She turned in the darkness, the same partial side of her face barely visible.

But Jia now became sure. She was close to reaching her but she disappeared into thick bushes and as Jia made her way in, a vast garden stretched before her. She looked all around, not missing a single beat but she couldn’t see the woman anywhere.

"Mam!"

Xiyang, accompanied by some officers, came running to her.

"Xiyang! Did you see a woman coming your way? She was wearing a purple mask. I lost her here," she came to a breathless stop.

Xiyang looked at the officers and everybody shook their heads. "No, Mam. We didn’t see any woman escaping from here."

"No, she is definitely here. She is hiding somewhere. Go look for her quickly!"

The other officers swiftly heeded her order and dispersed in various directions in the garden.

"Unbelievable..." she muttered.

Xiyang asked, "What’s wrong Mam?"

"Uh, I will get to it later. What’s the update on your side?"

He nodded. "We caught some escaping guests. They were trying to act natural as if they were leaving the hotel, but we checked their necks. We have detained everybody with the She tattoos."

"Great. Keep up the search. We can let even a single cult member leave."

"Yes, Mam!" Xiyang left to assist the other officers.

Jia spent some more time combing through all parts of the garden, but there was no trace of that woman anymore.

Damn it!

Jia gritted her teeth and kicked a nearby stone to oblivion. Tired and fatigued, she leaned her back against her tree, staring at the night sky above.

I screwed up...I screwed up the mission...

She struggled to calm her trembling breaths.

"Seems like you lost her."

Her stupor broke and she looked back with a jolt. She faced the same stranger she met before.

"We met at the amusement park."

"Yes," he calmly said.

"It’s...it’s good to see you again. How are you here tonight...?"

He smiled. "Charity function."

"Ah, I see."

From what she knew, the charity function held only rich and elite guests tonight. She concluded that this man must also belong to some wealthy family.

"Seems like we always meet in the middle of your cases."

She coughed. "Quite a coincidence."

"There are no coincidences. It’s always planned."

"Surely our meeting tonight was a stroke of luck."

"No, we met again because I saw you chasing after the woman and I thought I could provide you with some help."

Her eyes widened. "Wait, so you collided into her on purpose?"

He simply maintained his poised smile.

"Ah, shit..." she scratched her head. "Thank you so much. But you really didn’t have to do that. It could have been very dangerous."

"I have always been in a wheelchair. I have been sick most of my life. This danger hardly counts."

"I am sorry..."

"Please don’t be. You are not at fault. Oh and..."

From the side of his wheelchair, he brought out two shiny pairs of heels and showed her.

"You brought my heels with you. Ah, I was coming back to fetch them anyway," she said, embarrassed.

He smiled. "No problem. I got to see a cool cop in action."

She cleared her throat.

"Spicyyyyyyyyyy I found you!" Mingshen eagerly waved his hand and hopped to her side. But he noticed a man’s back in a wheelchair and he frowned.

"Spicy making new friends behind my back?"

He turned around and stood beside Jia, his gaze finally meeting the man’s. His expression immediately hardened.

"Hello, Dr. Yang," the wheelchair man greeted him.

Mingshen said nothing, but a dark, frightful glint took over his black eyes.

Jia asked, "You know each other?"

He glanced at her and back at Mingshen. "You can say I know Dr. Yang Cheng to be precise. He saved my life years ago."

"Oh."

The air turned heavy and difficult to breathe. Jia felt a vague tension between them.

"How are your parents?" He asked Mingshen.

Mingshen asked rhetorically, his murderous intentions clearly at display. "What do you think?"

He simply stared at him in silence. "Please give my regards to them."

"We don’t need it. It wasn’t that much pleasant the last time you gave your regards. So keep it to yourself."

He didn’t respond. "My apologies."

"Don’t need that either."

He gave a light smile. "Hm. I can see that. I will take my leave."

The man pressed a toggle switch on the right side of his wheelchair’s armrest, and the wheels started to rotate. He glanced at Jia. "See you later. Good night."

"Good night."

As he left their view, she looked at Mingshen and wondered if she should pry into it or not. "...You two...have a history?"

His gaze was fixed straight ahead as if he was looking at a far away distance. He tore his gaze away and smiled at Jia. "Nope. No history."
