Chapter 209: Increased difficulty
Yang Bingqing opened her eyes at present after a short trance of the past. The decision to disband her gang came after careful consideration to marry Yang Cheng.
"I knew my decision didn’t sit well with some members of the gang, so does it mean that somebody really took it upon themselves to revive She?"
The man’s voice on the other end was solemn and grave. "This cannot be possible, Boss. We all respected your decision. We still do."
"Then how come there are people wandering around with the signature tattoo on their necks?"
There wasn’t an answer.
"You do realize that it could only be somebody from the gang, right? We were a very close knit group. Not even Zhao Weizhe knew about us. This is a big problem. Not only is that person operating She from the shadows but what the hell are they doing with that name? The She that I lead did not mess up a girl’s genitals. They are outright tarnishing it."
Her black orbs grew colder and menacing. "We killed people but we had principles."
"I understand. I will find out who is behind this."
"Better be quick because my hands are itching for blood. I won’t care about the past camaraderie if somebody is doing such nonsense with the gang’s name that I lead."
He breathed out deeply. "Yes, Boss."
"I am not your Boss anymore."
"You are. You always were."
Yang Bingqing arched her brow but simply shrugged. Then something came to her mind. "Oh yes. Cheng was talking about your daughter once."
"Mulan?"
"Yes. He was thinking about matchmaking Mulan and Mingshen."
"...Seriously?"
"Yup."
After a beat of silence, he said, "I feel flattered but it is impossible."
"Indeed. I have already found a perfect woman for my son!" She proudly said, "My heart is set on Jia! And she is another reason why I am so mad. She is in jail because of these buffoons who have created this mess!"
She pouted. "Though I am set on Jia as my daughter-in-law, it still hurts to see your immediate rejection. Becoming in-laws is not a bad thing. Don’t tell me it’s because you cannot see me outside of the lens as your Boss."
"It’s complicated with your family, Boss. No offense."
"Is it related to Cheng?"
"A thing of the distant past but it still matters a lot."
"Well I won’t pry into it then. Find out about the culprit and let me know."
"Yes, Boss."
—
Two days before the court’s second hearing, Tang Haitao privately visited Jia again off the record.
"It’s still not late. Withdraw your confession, Jia.
Jia shook her head. "I stand by my confession, Sir."
"You realize that after Yu Ehuang’s court’s hearing, it will be your turn, right? Your defense lawyer is trying hard as he can but everybody knows it’s a lost cause. You might get some sympathy considering the sensitive situation. Maybe we can even ward off jail time by taking your sparkling service record into consideration. But once the judgment comes, one thing is clear. You will be forever relieved from your duties. There is no way you would be able to return to being an officer again."
"Yes, I understand everything, Sir."
"And still you want to protect Mingshen."
"He has done nothing wrong to be on this side of the bench."
"So did you."
She simply smiled at that.
Tang Haitao pressed his lips. "You are a great officer, Jia. It’s a loss for our police force if we have to let go of you."
"We have many other great officers, Sir. Officer Lim, Xiyang, Huojin. My absence won’t be missed, trust me."
"You..."
Suddenly the door opened and Huojin rushed in. He was surprised to see Tang Haitao as there wasn’t any official record of his meeting with Jia.
"Why are you in a hurry, Huojin? Are you here to give me the good news that you finally found Jia’s badge?"
His brow twitched. "...Not yet."
"What is taking you forever? Will the threat of suspension work for you?"
"I am doing my best, Sir," he cleared his throat.
Damn it you devil doctor! You will seriously make Sir feed me to the sharks!
"I want results, not efforts."
Jia took pity on Huojin. "It’s okay, Sir. Please don’t be hard on him. He is doing his best."
"It’s a cop’s badge Jia. There is your honor on one side and on the other side, you know how it can be misused if it fell into wrong hands," he narrowed his eyes.
"I am sure Huojin will find it."
Huojin cleared his throat. "That I will. But for now, the matter with You Ehuang’s case has become even graver."
Jia sat alert. "What happened?"
"Yu Heng was supposed to appear for his testimony right?"
"Yes."
"He won’t be able to anymore. He is dead."
"What!?"
"The news just came that he was drunk driving and his car crashed. He died on the spot."
Jia stared at him, baffled. "Drunk driving...?"
"Yes."
Her jaw gnashed as anger consumed her. "This is ridiculous! Just two days before the court’s hearing, Yu Heng dies? It is as clear as day that somebody from She is behind this."
She lowered her head, clenching her fists hard. "It was my fault. We should have given him police protection. How could I miss it!?"
Tang Haitao said, "Calm down Jia. We will think about what to do."
"How can I, Sir? Once we learned that She is behind everything, we should have immediately taken him into our protective custody."
Huojin asked, "Is there nothing we can provide to the court?"
She pressed her lips. "Actually, I did record the conversation between us at that time. I had doubts that Yu Heng could go back on his words and give a different testimony in his brother’s favor."
Tang Haitao shook his head. "The defense will grill us alive on that. Secretly recorded conversations are not legally admissible in the court because they have not been legally authorized."
"It’s a matter of Ehuang’s life, Sir. The recording will prove her parents’ guilt."
"The judge cannot bend the rules, Jia. This case has become a hell lot difficult now."
