Chapter 166: The horror of truth

On the other side, Meng Rin was staring at her constantly buzzing phone as she sat on her bed with her knees hugged to her chest. Her heart thudded as if a knot was tightening around it. She hung up on the incoming call and slowly wiped her forehead laced with a layer of sweat.

The phone buzzed again and she almost dropped it from her hand. A soft gasp escaped her trembling lips. She felt an extremely bad foreboding and quickly picked it up.

"RinRin! You finally picked up my call. I got so worried, you know? I was about to come to Tianjin myself," A man’s deep and concerned voice rang from the other end.

She froze hard as if the earth shattered under her feet.

"N-No I wasn’t really...ignoring your calls. It’s just that...you would have seen the news. Director Wan died and with all the police investigation going on, I j-just couldn’t..."

She heard a sigh of relief.

"Thank God. I thought you were in some sort of a problem. But I still think I should come to Tianjin hmm..."

Meng Rin’s expression paled. "There is no need! I-I am doing fine here."

"Hm? But I am not really sure if the cops there are bothering you or not," his voice sounded somber.

"Why would they bother me...?" Her gaze lowered as she bit her lip.

Suddenly, her eyes widened as an idea struck her. But she hesitated if it was wise to ask for his help.

"I...!" She swallowed her saliva. "C-Can I ask you something?"

"Of course, RinRin! I am so happy. It’s the first time you are asking me to do something," the man’s voice distinctly held a thrill in it as if his patience was rewarded after a long time.

Meng Rin asked after contemplating. "Can you...can you please help Chow Mey?"

There wasn’t an answer.

"Sh-She is arrested for Director Wan’s murder. But I don’t think that...that she killed him. Chow Mey would never kill anybody. I...I really respect her a-as my senior so if you could do something..."

The man released a sigh from the other end. "A pity RinRin. You asked for my help for the first time but I am afraid I won’t be able to help you."

She stiffened. She had really thought that this would work but her hopes crashed.

"It would unnecessarily bring the suspicion light on your crew again, including you. And I cannot let the scapegoat go free, you know?"

Meng Rin blinked twice in confusion. "Scapegoat? W-who?"

A chuckle rang that passed a shudder across her spine. "Chow Mey herself, who else silly?"

She froze.

"I mean if she is already conveniently arrested, then I don’t have to stress out over anything needlessly."

Meng Rin couldn’t make any sense of his words. "...Stress out over what?"

"Wan Guanting’s death obviously."

She blankly stared ahead at the empty space.

"He was being such an ass with the agency takeover and all you know? He was unnecessarily creating problems in my life which concerned you. So well, he had to die, you know?"

Her hand holding her phone was shaking. She understood what he was admitting to but at the same time she wasn’t.

"...You...you killed Director Wan?"

"Hm? Yeah," he casually admitted.

Meng Rin’s mind went blank. It was as if she forgot to breathe.

"Don’t sweat about how I did it. I have my ways and people to do it for me. In your crew itself. I don’t have to get my hands dirty. It’s always been like that."

Meng Rin couldn’t speak. The sheer fear made her stomach churn with dread.

"And I never thought I would be in such luck~ Chow Mey landed herself in trouble. I was like cool. Case solved. Nobody will bother with that oldie’s death anymore. So now you see? I cannot help Chow Mey or it will open a can of worms which I would rather want them to die in that same can, you know?"

"Y-you cannot do this!" She suddenly jumped off the feet, shivering badly. "Chow Mey...Chow Mey is in j-jail for something she didn’t do!"

"Yup. That’s how the world works."

The color drained out of her face. She couldn’t believe she was talking to a murderer right now.

"So don’t worry too much, okay? And I don’t want you getting involved in helping Chow Mey and bringing needless troubles for me," the iciness and threat in his tone at the last bit was clearly evident.

Meng Rin rubbed her neck, struggling to catch her breath. She could barely hold herself from standing straight.

His voice came again and she jolted. "I gotta go. Work calls. Love you."

Meng Rin was still shaken in shock.

"RinRin?"

"H-Huh!?"

"Where is your love you too?"

She stiffened.

His voice lowered immeasurably, bringing a chill in the air. "RinRin...you are not forgetting that I helped you with your career, right? Your fame is thanks to the chance that I got you. Otherwise you would have always stayed rotten and undiscovered in the underground ring."

The reminder of the past brought tears to her eyes.

"So what should you be saying to me now?"

She hoarsely said, "...I love you too."

"Great! It always feels like such music to my ears. See ya later. Don’t forget what I said, okay? Stay out of trouble. Let things go as they are."

Bojing and Shilin just entered the hotel lobby after completing Director Wan’s post mortem back at the hospital. He held Wan Guanting’s medical history file which wasn’t hard to get as Mingshen’s assistant.

"Boss was right..." he gasped to himself. "Th-The cold medicine wasn’t an accident."

"Indeed," Shilin said with a somber voice, "Wan Guanting had hypertension and he was taking calcium channel blockers for it."

"S-so the cold medicine cannot be there in his drink u-unless somebody knew of his condition and me-medications he was taking. It tr-triggered his heart rate and caused cardiac arrest!"

Shilin thoughtfully said, "But then Chow Mey adding the medicine doesn’t add to it. She doesn’t need to go to his room and kill him with a pillow if she added the cold medicine and knew he would get a cardiac arrest. If she added the sleep medicine, then it’s a different story though."

"Y-yeah we need to tell-"

Suddenly, somebody bumped hard into Bojing and his eyes widened. He burst into tears. "I-I am sorry! I wasn’t watching my way. I am so u-useless...A-re you hurt anywhere?"

Meng Rin looked up vacantly at them and shook her head in a daze.

Bojing tearfully blinked. Shilin slightly tilted his head as well. Bojing said, "You do-don’t look fine at all."
