Chapter 164: Putting heads together

"I still don’t get it. If she put in the sleeping pills, then she already knew that Wan Guanting was deep asleep. Then she suffocated him. What took her so long to come out of his room then?"

Mingshen shrugged. "Some people like to stay with dead bodies."

"I am talking about a normal woman here, not you," Jia voiced her displeasure.

"Killers are usually not normal~"

She ignored it and continued. "If she genuinely went to talk to him like she says, then either way she would have seen that he wasn’t in any state to talk. Once again, she should have been out of that room in minutes."

"So you think she is innocent," he arched his brow.

"I am more inclined to believe Chow Mey’s statement. She realized he was dead, perhaps fainted due to shock and hurriedly left after she regained her senses. If it was premeditated then she cannot be that stupid to kill him knowing that we would catch her sooner or later," she shook her head. "Then there is the cold medicine in his alcohol."

"Somebody thinks that he took it as a preventive measure," he sneered. "Yeah he was so desperate that he couldn’t even find a glass of water that he had to resort to alcohol."

Her brow twitched. "I agree it’s strange. What happens if you ingest a cold medicine with alcohol?"

Mingshen beamed as if he was floating on the ninth cloud. "Spicy, you should talk to me like this more."

"Like how?"

"Like we are the bestest partners~"

Jia wished she could puke blood. "I am being professional which I want all the time only if you know how to behave."

"I always behave appropriately~" he innocently blinked.

"Yeah and earth is flat," she dryly said, "Now if you will please answer me."

He chuckled. "Increased dizziness, impaired cognitive function and coordination, shallow breathing, gastrointestinal irritation are the top of the list~"

"I see..."

Not really connected to his death. Am I really overthinking about this? Perhaps Wan Guanting did take it himself?

"I will get his medical history soon~ Then your dashing prince will solve the mystery in no time," he shone.

She ignored the dashing prince part and asked, "Medical history for what?"

"There could be high chances that he has pre-existing heart problems. So it was easier to get a cardiac arrest."

She tilted her head. "Okay. But that won’t change anything."

"It will," he laughed devilishly. "Because if it turns out to be the case then the cold medicine won’t be so innocent anymore."

Her eyes narrowed. "What do you mean?"

He shone like the bright sun. "Time for some medicine class~"

"Speak normal Mandarin to me."

He waved his hand in dismissal. "So, so! If that director has any form of coronary artery disease or any heart related problem, such people are generally prescribed amlodipine or diltiazem. They come from the class of calcium channel blockers. They dilate the blood vessels, reduce blood pressure and improve blood flow to the heart."

"Okay," though Jia didn’t understand where he was going with this.

Mingshen had fully donned the teaching cap by then with his eyes gleaming with excitement.

"But when they are given medicines like nasal decongestants containing pseudoephedrine, it can cause the opposite effect because it acts as sympathomimetic agent-"

"Normal Mandarin," she reminded him.

"In other words that increases the heart rate and blood pressure~"

Her eyes widened.

"You see, you see? If calcium channel blockers and pseudoephedrine interact with each other, it can cause severe heart complications, including a cardiac arrest. That’s why I ordered a full post mortem and his medical history and that’s why I said to that officer," he chuckled, "Medicine can become poison too depending on who you give it to~"

Her lips parted, stunned. "But then doesn’t that mean that he could have gotten a cardiac arrest because of the onset of the cold medicine’s effects and not asphyxia? The suffocation might have simply aided the process."

"Possible. Or maybe both triggered the cardiac arrest together. But it will only be confirmed once I have all the data."

"Ugh!! This is all so confusing," she pressed her brow. "If what you are saying happens to be the case then it could have been done by somebody who knows about Wan Guanting’s medical history. That is if he has one."

"Correct~ Cold medicine in his alcohol cannot be random."

She frowned. "But don’t patients with such medical history have to abstain from alcohol?"

He shrugged. "Depends on his condition. He can have limited intake."

"But his team said that he drank a lot."

"He didn’t drink a lot. He didn’t get wasted. He fell asleep because of the sleeping pills."

Jia let out a sigh.

I need to see this from a different angle. I am missing something...

She took another round of the room but didn’t find anything of substance. She walked out of the room, trying to picture herself as Chow Mey rushing to meet Wan Guanting for some reason.

Just then the door of the adjacent room opened and Bai Caishen stepped out. Jia stiffened for a moment as she was clearly caught messing around Wan Guanting’s room.

He arched his brow, surprised. "Miss. Song."

Ke Yufei followed him and slightly widened his eyes. "What are you doing here?"

"We can ask you the same~" Mingshen came out too, smiling cockily at Bai Caishen.

The latter narrowed his eyes. "I don’t really need permission to be anywhere."

"We return the same sentiment."

He chuckled. "No you don’t. I believe Miss. Song shouldn’t really be the peeping tom here. She isn’t officially handling the case, is she?"

Jia blinked. She hadn’t expected him to say that.

Strange.

"Were you working on your tapes again?" she asked.

Bai Caishen said, "I had trouble getting sleep anyway. Might as well do some work. Yufei is a night owl so he was cool with it."

Ke Yufei glanced at Jia once and then looked away.

"Did you figure something out with your secret investigation?" Bai Caishen tilted his head.

Her brow twitched. "I had forgotten something."

Bai Caishen stared at her. "I see."

Mingshen remembered something and then clapped his hands once. "Oh yes~ I think this is the time you should say what you told me last night~"

Jia frowned. "Told what?"

"The part about hearing some weird clicking sound from here around the time the crime occured."
