The Devil Doctor's Spicy Love
Chapter 161: Spiked twice

Chapter 161: Spiked twice

"Start talking, Assistant Lu."

Bojing jolted as he was called out of nowhere. "M-Me?"

"How many Assistant Lus’ are here?"

If it was only Jia then there wasn’t a problem but Lei Honghui, with his entire team, was present too. The social anxiety amped up. "Th-That..." he trembled.

"Quickly! What is this cardiac arrest you are speaking of?" Lei Honghui demanded an answer.

Bojing burst into tears. "W-We tested Wan Guanting’s blood and gut acids. The l-last consumed drink was alcohol a-and..."

"And what?" He sharply urged, making Bojing take a step back.

He shivered and said, "Pseudoephedrine."

Jia blinked. "What’s that?"

"I-It’s a common nasal decongestant that is u-used to treat allergies and colds."

"But his crew said that he didn’t have any allergies. So was he suffering from a cold then?"

"No. W-we found very minute traces of it in the glass from w-which he drank alcohol."

Lei Honghui grimaced. "Why would anybody spike someone’s drink with a cold medicine?"

Shilin said, "At this point, we aren’t sure either. But the alcohol was surely spiked."

Jia felt a little difficult to keep up. "But he was suffocated with the pillow, right?"

Mingshen beamed. "Ding, ding! Exactly, Spicy~"

"So did that cause the cardiac arrest?"

"Yes~ He died from cardiac arrest and asphyxiation caused the blue discoloration on his lips and fingertips. So the initial signs told me that he died because of it."

Lei Honghui’s eyes stretched wide with shock. He contemplated a bit and frowned. "Sure the original cause of his death is different but that doesn’t change anything about the culprit."

"You don’t think anything is strange with mixing in cold medicine in the drink when he didn’t have a cold in the first place?"

"Wan Guanting might have mixed in himself, Dr. Yang. It’s quite chilly in Tianjin now. He might have thought that he was catching a cold or felt some symptoms coming so he took it as a preventive measure."

Mingshen laughed. "Go ahead with part 2 of the report, Assistant Lu."

Jia and Lei Honghui - "..."

So this doesn’t end here?

Bojing said, "W-we also found traces of sleep medication in the r-remnants of the alcohol in the glass and a little from his stomach too."

Jia tried to add two plus two but she wasn’t getting the four she was looking for. "There was decongestant and sleep medication mixed in his drink?"

Shilin and Bojing nodded.

"Then..." Jia was staring at the floor but her brain was working as if she was present right at the party. "Are there two people who wanted him dead?"

"There are no two people, Miss. Song," Lei Honghui narrowed his eyes. "It’s Chow Mey who definitely mixed in the sleep medication. That’s obvious. She wanted him helpless to not put up any fight. As for cold medicine like I said, he might have put in himself. It’s medicine after all. It’s not poison to treat it as getting spiked."

Mingshen arched his brow. "Medicine can also become poison for some people, Supervisor. It depends who you are giving it to."

"You are reading too much into it, Dr. Yang. In fact, I got the added evidence I needed to nab Chow Mey. She must definitely have some sleeping pills with her somewhere hidden in her bag."

Lei Honghui left in a huff, his eyes gleaming to corner Chow Mey with no escape route.

"Your Supervisor doesn’t seem to have a very wide horizon," Mingshen sneered.

Jia snapped her attention at him. "Firstly, he is not my Supervisor."

"And secondly?"

Her irises flashed with a little hint of shame and helplessness. "Some officers don’t choose to have a wide horizon if they already have a culprit and evidence against them."

"Because who wants to take the extra effort and brain power to find clues again? You are getting everything on a silver platter, aren’t you?" Mingshen stabbed it further.

Bojing hugged his arms with the air growing chillier.

The reality hurt her but she was equally adamant and resolute. "I won’t rest until every doubt in my mind is settled. Let me know if you learn something more about his cardiac arrest."

She left the office, already entering into case-solving mode.

Bojing cried. "I feel bad for sis. S-she cannot even enjoy her v-vacation..."

Mingshen scoffed. "Learn to better understand facial cues, my dear assistant. Who in the world says that Spicy is not enjoying her vacation? From what I see..." he craned his neck and watched her leave with a sparkle in her eyes.

He chuckled. "She is having the best time of her life. And so do I."

Bojing asked, "W-what should we do next, Boss?"

"I want to know why the cold medicine was there in his alcohol."

He nodded.

"Do a full post mortem and bring me his medical history."

The setting sun in the orange sky brought an end to the third day since Jia had been in Tianjin. Yet every passing day only brought more questions to the seemingly simple case which should have ended with Chow Mey’s arrest.

Jia continued to take slow steps and came across Xin Manchu chilling in the swimming pool area between the two wings of the hotel. He was resting on one of the pool chairs, half-naked and basking in the pleasant warmth of the evening sun.

"Hey Officer!"

He raised his scotch-filled glass with a grin and invited her to join him. Jia walked over with particularly no expression on her face.

"I see you are quite enjoying yourself."

"For how long should I be moping in depression anyway? The four walls of my room were eating into my peace. Please have a seat."

Jia slowly sat on a neighbor chair and kept her stick aside.

"Want some?" He offered her a drink.

"No, thank you."

He shrugged and then sighed. "Such a bummer for this celebration to turn out this way."

"Was it within your expectations for Chow Mey to do this? You did say to the reporters that you had seen her leaving from Director Wan’s office quite angrily one day."

Xin Manchu stared at her intently. "Somebody was paying attention."

"Paying attention is in my job description."

"The investigation is over."

"My humble curiosity isn’t," she smiled. "Chow Mey is not giving answers so I figure I might learn something from the people she worked with."

"Ah. That makes sense."

Xin Manchu then rolled his eyes. "It’s not that she only had a problem with Director Wan. She had issues with all men as if our gender is her enemy."

"Perhaps because of the unrealistic beauty expectations," she said recalling Meng Rin’s words.

He smiled. "Beauty is in our job description, Miss. Song. It is indeed true that Director Wan and also some other producers have made her go through surgeries and transformation. But every other actress has to do it. Sometimes actors too. Maybe she didn’t like it."

"Was that enough of a reason to kill him?"

"One can never tell. The last surgery on her face didn’t quite...suit her. Maybe that’s why she fought with him that day. Or that..."

"Or?"

"That perhaps she was losing his favor."
