Chapter 155: The devil’s orders

Chapter 155: The devil’s orders

By the time Chow Mey was arrested on the charges of murder and being taken to Tianjin Bureau, the news had already broken out. The grand hotel was stormed by the reporters. The crew of Whispers of the Heart was in a controversy with its lead actress being proved to be a murderer. This came at a time when there were only a few days left until the hundredth and the last episode would be aired.

The drama crew was completely surrounded by all sides as the camera flashlights blinded them.

"Bai Caishen, please tell us what happened. How did Director Wan Guanting die?"

"No comments," he calmly replied.

"Why did Chow Mey hate him so much to the point of killing him?"

"Were there secretly some problems brewing between them?"

"What was her relationship with Director Wan?"

Dong Haoyu’s gaze darkened. "What are you implying? Don’t ask nonsense questions!"

"But we got to hear that she visited him late at night and even had the key card to his room," one reporter raised her brow. "Doesn’t that feel awfully intimate?"

His expression worsened. "You...!"

Bai Caishen pulled him back and said, "Don’t react."

"How can I not?"

One of the reporters asked, "What is your relationship with Chow Mey?"

"None of your damn business!"

On the other hand, Meng Rin was sniffling continuously as her reddened eyes formed tears. "This is terrible...I know Meymey. She could have never done this..."

"Meng Rin, do you know anything about their relationship?"

"There cannot be anything between them. Are you kidding me? She is thirty-two and Director Wan was fifty-six years old!"

"Isn’t it very common for actresses and directors to have..."

"That is preposterous and I won’t ever hear such nonsense about Meymey!" Meng Rin glowered at them. "Keep your conspiracy theories to yourself!"

Xin Manchu’s take was fairly different who seemed to have accepted the verdict. He let out a troubled sigh. "This makes me think how we can truly never know enough about the people around us...even our colleagues who we have worked with and about whom we claim to know all about them. This is truly a sad affair."

"Why do you think Chow Mey would have killed Director Wan?"

"I am sorry but she is a very private person. We were just fellow actors, not really close friends," he brushed her off. "But I did see Mey once storming out of the Director’s office one day...I am really not so sure. Maybe I was imagining things?"

That earned a few audible gasps from the reporters who were trying to put two and two together.

Suddenly a hand grabbed his coat and Dong Haoyu’s deadly furious gaze threatened to eat him raw. "Xin Manchu! That was too lowly of you to diss at Mey like that. What do you want to do, suggesting rubbish like that!?"

His eyes coldly narrowed and he roughly slapped away his hand. "I am just saying what I saw, Mr. Knight in shining armor."

That particular phrase heightened the tension as some of the reporters were already having suspicions regarding Dong Haoyu’s feelings for Chow Mey.

Dong Haoyu lifted his fist to punch his face when Bai Caishen stepped in between. He held his wrist and promptly put it down. "Let’s not fight in front of the media and unnecessarily fuel the fire," he whispered.

He sent a warning gaze down Xin Manchu’s direction too, to which he only snorted.

Bai Caishen then faced the reporters with a light smile. "It’s a difficult time for everybody in the crew. I hope you give us some privacy. We will give a press conference when we will be ready. Thank you."

The reporters calmed down and backed off with Bai Caishen giving the ultimatum. That put all the rowdy chaos at peace.

Jia was impressed from afar. He pacified the tensions between Xin Manchu and Dong Haoyu and the uncontrollable media too. At some distance in front of her, she saw Ke Yufei staring at all the drama ensuing. The makeup artists Zeng Shan and Guo Juan stood at the other side.

With her cane’s support, she walked up to his side. "Everything quickly took a turn for the worse."

His eyes slightly widened and he turned. "You. Yes. It’s shocking."

Jia looked down. He was holding his camera in his hands, alternating his attention between the media and then back at his instrument, wiping it with a napkin. The side of his left wrist had a minor bruise.

She looked back at the dissipating crowd and asked, "How is Chow Mey as a person?"

Ke Yufei blinked. "Why do you want to know that?"

"You can infer a lot of things based on their personality."

He was quiet for a few moments. "She acts well. She is definitely talented."

"But?"

"She can be too headstrong to get what she wants," his eyes narrowed in the darkness as he stared at her. "She can go to any limits if things don’t go her way."

"So Director Wan’s death doesn’t take you by shock?"

"...I guess not."

Jia met his cryptic gaze with her own question. "What has she done before that makes you think that?"

His poker-faced expression revealed nothing.

"Something that anybody would hate to go through."

As Director Wan’s body was being put in the ambulance, the forensic doctor from Lei Honghui’s team was doing a final check. A hand pressed on his shoulder and he jolted upright. The horror on his face laced even further as the ever so enigmatic but popular Yang Mingshen appeared before him.

Mingshen looked at his name tag on the coat. "Ding Li."

"Y-Yes Sir!"

His brows became moist as sweat drops dripped down from his forehead.

Ah, ah, ah! Dr-Dr. Yang Mingshen standing all real before me!

He wished he could pinch his cheeks hard.

Mingshen took a cursory glance at Wan Guanting and then looked back at him. "What did the blood test say?"

Ding Li blinked rapidly in puzzlement. "Blood test?"

"You sent his blood sample to the lab for testing, right?"

"No."

An alarming smile stretched on Mingshen’s lips, making him shudder. "Why not?"

He swallowed hard. "I-I mean I didn’t get any such orders from Supervisor Lei. Also, he died through suffocation so a blood test isn’t really n-necessary..."

Mingshen stared at him. Then he took out his phone and dialed a number.

"Boss! H-How is your vacation going on? Y-you aren’t bullying s-sis Jia right?" Bojing fearfully asked.

"The vacation is getting even more amusing now. Is Shilin there?"

"Yes?"

"Put him on speaker," he put his own phone on speaker too as he said that.

A few seconds later, Shilin’s voice was heard. "Good evening. Boss."

"Pop quiz time. A man in his fifties is killed by a woman through asphyxiation. She had used a pillow. He had been partying in his room last night with his team. He drank a lot, got wasted and so a murder was executed early in the morning. Is a blood test necessary here?"

There was a pause on the other side after which Shilin’s answer came.

"Yes. From a murderer’s perspective, which is a woman in this case, suffocating the victim can get quite taxing if he is in his senses and has the strength to resist. That is applicable for a male too but more strongly for a woman. So getting the victim intoxicated is the easiest route."

"That doesn’t make a blood test necessary if asphyxiation is proved."

"That depends on the fact on how strong the alcohol tolerance of the victim was. If he would easily get drunk, then it might not be necessary. But if he has good tolerance and yet a few drinks caused him to pass out, then things become questionable. We need to know if something foreign was added to his drink."

Ding Lu’s eyes widened.

"Ding Ding! Correct answer. You pass~"

"Thank you."

"So pack your bags and catch the next flight to Tianjin with your senior. I want you two here tomorrow morning. Bye~"
