Chapter 148: The beginning of something sinister

The dinner awkwardly continued after the seemingly small confrontation. However, Chow Mey still had her chopsticks clenched between her fingers.

Dong Haoyu worriedly said, "Let it go, Mey. Just ignore him."

"I am fine," she said without much emotion.

He softly sighed. He then asked, "Should I pour some more wine for you?"

"No need."

Sitting opposite to them, Jia sensed a not so very pleasant conversation happening between them. The concern in Dong Haoyu’s eyes did signal to having feelings for her but...

It seems Chow Mey doesn’t feel the same.

She casually glanced beside her to ask Bai Caishen more about them. Her brow raised as she caught him staring at Chow Mey. But she couldn’t quite understand the intent behind that indecipherable gaze. It looked very different from when she met him before.

Jia tilted her head thoughtfully.

A love triangle?

The dinner ended at 9.30 after which Wan Guanting said, "It’s too early to retire to bed, especially when it’s celebration time. How about we all gather in my room and have fun~?"

Meng Rin beamed. "I am in!"

Xin Manchu said, "Cool."

Bai Caishen nodded as well.

Dong Haoyu looked at Chow Mey. "Let’s go, Mey. It will cheer up your mood. Just play and drink."

She rejected the idea. "No thanks."

Wan Guanting smiled. "Come on, Mey. Don’t be such a spoilsport. Everybody is coming. You won’t reject the director’s order, right?" He laughed.

Chow Mey’s brow twisted with frustration. "Fine."

Meng Rin exclaimed joyfully. "Yay!"

He asked Jia and Mingshen, "We would love it if you join us too."

Jia politely smiled. "Thanks for the offer. But we already intruded in your private dinner time. Please have fun. Thank you for having us."

Mingshen’s lack of response was his response itself.

She thanked Bai Caishen. "Thanks for inviting us."

He smiled. "My pleasure. Good night."

"You better not play that outrageous music again," Jia warned him as she was about to head inside her room.

Mingshen chuckled. "Don’t sneak into my room at night. Who knows if you decide the let your sinful desires loose~"

She smiled. "How I would love to fulfill my desire of strangling you. Unfortunately, reality is in your favor and I hate it so much."

"I mean seductive desires."

"You don’t provoke any seductive desires within me. Are you high from just that two glasses of wine?" She rolled her eyes and limped her way in her room.

"You have your physiotherapy session tomorrow," he poked her.

Her brow twitched. "I remember."

"Then that’s wonderful. I will be here tomorrow morning to remind you again~"

She gritted her teeth and closed the door on his face. He left with his irksome laughter echoing outside.

Jia mumbled curses at him and at her luck. She slowly climbed up the stairs towards the balcony and opened the door. The cool night breeze immediately washed away her sour mood. She walked till the railing and looked up at the dark sky. From afar, the street lights shone on the Hai river that made it shine like some golden necklace.

Beautiful...

It will be a pleasant night.

In the balcony of his own room, Bai Caishen too, was staring at the starless blanket of sky. His hands rested at the railing and a glass lay beside that had only a tiny bit of scotch left in it.

His irises glimmered with an emotion of the unknown as he quietly let the cold air sink in his skin. It brought a smile on his lips that was too perilous and lethal to ignore. His head tilted as a spine shivering chuckle escaped his lips.

It will be a pleasant night.

The next morning’s cheerful sunshine broke through the curtains to greet Jia’s sleeping face. Her eyelids fluttered and letting out a yawn, she stretched her arms with a satisfied smile.

That was some good sleep!

"A Queens’ suite bed is indeed so different," the soft mattress beneath her made her feel as if she was floating in the clouds.

"Good morning, Spicyyyyyy~~!"

And Jia crash landed immediately.

Mingshen’s continuous knocks on the door ruined all the good mood the sunshine had imbued her with.

"Are you awake? Are you awake? You are awake right, Spicy? It’s a pleasant 6.30 in the morning~"

My precious morning...

Jia jerked her body but remembered she had an injured knee. She grabbed her stick and furiously opened the door.

"Why the hell are you screaming so early in the morning?"

Mingshen grinned. "This was the perfect time to give you a wake up call."

"I don’t need a wake up call."

"But you do need a reminder of your appointment today~"

Her expression twisted. "I think I was clear yesterday that I don’t need that reminder either."

"Aish Spicy. I am just keeping an eye on you~ As my precious research subject, it’s my duty to keep my patient in top condition."

She gnashed her jaw. "The appointment is at eleven, Mingshen."

"But I thought that you would appreciate seeing my beautiful face first thing in the morning~"

"Would you appreciate my fist on that beautiful face? No wonder it had been itching since I woke up," she sneered.

"You wouldn’t be able to afford the heartbreaks of millions of women-"

The door shut right on his face, making his brows furrow. "Spicy is always so dishonest."

An hour later, Jia was all bathed and dressed and ready to go for a short morning walk. She cautiously opened her door and seeing nobody outside, she breathed out in relief.

I might have really punched his face if I would have seen him one more time.

Jia slowly and steadily made her way to the swimming pool area. The warm sun and fresh air brought a smile to her lips.

"It’s nice weather, isn’t it?"

She opened her eyes and saw Bai Caishen sitting on a pool chair to her right. He was half-naked and seemingly ready to go for a dip.

"Morning."

"Morning," she replied back. "You are up early. I thought after last night’s celebration, it will be late sunshine for you all."

He smiled. "I am a morning person. My internal clock is set at 7 am."

"That’s nice. How was the party last night at Wan Guanting’s room?"

"Nothing fancy. We just chatted and laughed and drank. How is your leg now?"

"Recovering. I have an appointment today," she sighed. "Well I will leave you to enjoy your pool time."

"Enjoy your walk."

Jia took a slow, long stroll around the hotel. She figured it was a good time to explore the grand hotel she was staying at.

The big pool in which Bai Caishen was swimming divided the hotel into two major wings on its either side - Wing A and Wing B. Both wings had their own garden and facilities while the restaurant and pool were common. She and Mingshen had their rooms in Wing A. Her eyes could only marvel at the grandeur and once again, it simply made her remember her bank balance.

As her walk came to an end and she felt exhausted, she thought to head for breakfast. To her dismay, a certain devil was already present at one of the tables. Her gaze darkened.

To the other side, she noticed the drama crew already seated for breakfast except Wan Guanting. However, as she reached closer, she sensed a grim atmosphere where seemingly nobody shared the merry mood from last night.

Everybody looks so...serious.

Suddenly, a female attendant from the service staff came rushing in with haphazard breaths and a terror-stricken face. She headed straight to the table with all the crew members present.

"Th-The customer from Wing B, Room 1202, Mr. Wan Guanting, is from your group, right?"

Everybody looked at each other, puzzled.

Xin Manchu said, "Yes. What is the problem?"

"You all need to come with me. I am sorry to say b-but..." she gasped, frightened, "he is dead."
