Chapter 137: Like father, like son
Lunch was served and the piping hot food did make Jia’s stomach grumble with hunger. But the thought of her neighbor beside her was enough to lift the happy mood away from her.
Mingshen smirked. "Do you want me to serve you soup? It’s definitely not laced with a sleeping dose."
Now Jia wondered what exactly on her plate was safe to eat. She looked up from her plate to a beaming Yang Bingqing.
Wait, this food has been prepared by Aunt so it must be safe to eat.
"You really cannot trust my mother, either~"
"Did you say something?" Yang Bingqing narrowed her eyes.
"I was just highlighting trust issues in regards to you," he sneered.
She sneered back. "Unlike for a certain ungrateful son, I wouldn’t mix anything suspicious in Jia’s food who I adore so much."
T-That...
Jia inwardly felt a little embarrassed.
"After all, she is going to become my daughter-in-law!"
"..."
"Aunt, you have a misunderstanding-"
"Cheng!!! Here! Here! You are finally out of your study hole! Don’t you know Jia has been waiting for you for so long?" She glared at her husband.
As if a gust of chilly wind raised the hairs on the back of her neck, she shuddered. It was quite pleasant room temperature inside, but somebody’s footsteps just invoked the onslaught of ice rain. A tall figure stood beside her chair and Jia slowly lifted her gaze.
The depths in those black, grim and all knowing orbs made her almost dizzy for a second.
"Hello, Uncle. Sorry for the intrusion," she greeted Yang Cheng.
Yang Bingqing said, "How is it intrusion when I invited you! You are an esteemed guest here," she seriously nodded.
Apparently, Yang Cheng’s staring contest was still far from over, so Jia couldn’t respond to Yang Bingqing. Now that she closely watched him after a long period of more than a year, she could easily spot the familiarities between the father and son. Their facial features were too striking except for Mingshen’s eyes that held a spark of mischievousness just like his mother’s.
Jia’s smile eventually began to falter when Yang Cheng still refused to utter a single word in response to her greeting.
Damn it, this is so awkward!
"Stand."
Unexpectedly hearing his low voice made her widen her eyes. "Sorry?"
"Stand."
For some reason, the authority in his voice affected her, and Jia immediately grabbed the crutch.
Yang Bingqing cried. "My poor girl. The knee must hurt a lot..."
Mingshen yawned. "Can we eat? I am hungry."
"Shut up! Can’t you see the poor girl is in pain?" She threw him a deadly glare. "Is this how you will treat your future wife?"
He raised his brow. "I don’t have sympathies for people who don’t listen to me."
At the same time, Yang Cheng said very slowly, "You are missing your physio sessions."
It wasn’t a question but a statement.
Jia’s brows twitched. She gulped, noticing his black eyes staring straight at her that demanded an answer.
"I forgot..."
"Twice?"
How could he tell it was twice?
"...Things happened," her throat went dry.
"There are three professions in this world one shouldn’t lie to. Doctors, cops and lawyers. It’s useless."
"..."
"Do cops think that they don’t feel pain? Or aren’t they allowed to?"
"O-of course it’s not like that. We are humans too..."
"Then why wouldn’t you attend the physiotherapy sessions? Do you want to aggravate your injury? Or do you wish for the recovery process to stretch unnecessarily? Then you will waste the hospital’s time and resources which could have helped another patient in distress. Do you think doctors have unlimited time on their hands?"
"..."
She found it harder and harder to find her voice. "I...am...s-sorry..."
Yang Bingqing gasped. "Cheng! Don’t be so rude to her!"
He said expressionlessly, "I am not polite to people who don’t listen to doctors."
Yang Cheng narrowed his eyes, making her sweat. Then he slowly retracted his gaze.
"Cops. Always a bunch of stubborn and pain-in-the-ass patients."
"..."
Jia lacked tears to shed.
I see who Mingshen takes after...
She awkwardly kept standing for a while until Yang Cheng frowned. "Why are you still standing? Don’t tire the ligaments any further."
"...Yes."
She quietly sat down, gulping once again.
Yang Bingqing chirped. "Jia, don’t you worry about Cheng. He is a little cold but in the end, he only worries about you. He just wants you to get well soon."
"I understand. It’s my fault for being irresponsible," she admitted. "I will be regular with my sessions now."
Yang Cheng studied her sincerity and ever so slowly nodded.
Mingshen grabbed the bowl to his side. "Can we finally eat now?"
Yang Bingqing gritted her teeth. "Have I kept you hungry for all these years that you are jumping like a dog?"
"Your hard working son needs his carbs and proteins."
"It’s useless to talk to you!"
So she focused her attention on Jia. "So how work is going, dear?"
The one-eighty degree change from an angry blasting mother to a soft spoken host had Jia in awe. But then again, a son like Mingshen incited violent reactions within anybody.
"Work is going fine, Aunt," she smiled. "There are cases as always."
She pursed her lips. "Work is fine but how do you live alone? Do you really take care of yourself?"
"Ah well I try to. But I have Aunt Zhang as my neighbor so she helps out a lot."
"Damn it."
"Sorry?"
She coughed. "Nothing. I mean having an older and dependable figure is great."
Mingshen just sneered as he popped in a piece of carrot.
"Cheng," she elbowed her husband with a sneaky glance as she took a sip of water. "You say something too~"
Yang Cheng frowned. He gazed at Jia with scrutiny, making her jolt.
"You have a good body."
Jia - "..."
Yang Bingqing spitted out the water she was drinking.
"Eww, Mom! That’s disgusting," Mingshen grimaced.
"Zip your lips for once!"
Yang Bingqing nervously laughed, quickly waving her hand. "H-He doesn’t mean it that way dear..."
Yang Cheng continued as if nothing happened. "But you don’t sleep well. Your eyes are tired. Why is that so?"
