Chapter 113: Well crafted illusion

*WARNING - LIGHT GORE SCENE*

The third man smiled. "Nice try. You think you can put up an act that you don’t care about these people? Especially the cops. You are on the same team, right? Look, that one over there is all dying already."

Mingshen glanced at Lim and shrugged. "He won’t survive till all this wraps up anyway."

Jia’s gaze darkened with a touch of anger. "Don’t you dare say that, Mingshen. Lim won’t die."

He yawned. "Is he immortal? He gets stabbed, he bleeds and he dies. He won’t survive, nor do I care. His dying expression is irking me immensely to be honest. So I will do him a favor and end his suffering right away."

From inside his doctor’s coat, he took out a syringe and a small vial with transparent liquid. He infused the syringe with the liquid and tapped on its needle.

The second man pointed his dagger at him. "No way you are injecting anything into him. For all we know, you might be helping him."

"It’s so adorable of you to think that I care about explaining myself to you."

Jia tremblingly mustered her strength to stand on her feet but failed. "You will do no such thing, Mingshen. No matter how slim chances there are, Lim won’t give up on the fight!"

Mingshen stared at her knee with a tilted head. He smiled. "You should care about your own injury first, my dear~"

With that said, he jabbed the needle into Lim’s shoulder without any warning. He pushed the liquid out of the syringe and into his body. Lim sharply shuddered and gasped.

"You cannot do that!"

The second man lunged at him with his dagger ready to slash his face.

Mingshen’s psychotic laughter reverberated. "Like I said. Very adorable."

The dagger’s tip was a few feet away from touching his face. Mingshen removed the jabbed needle from Lim’s shoulder and stabbed it straight into the second man’s left eye socket.

"Aaaahhhhhh!!!"

The woman at the back shook so hard that she felt her soul leaving her body. Her muffled gasp echoed. That ruthless stab got so clearly ingrained in her brain that she wondered if she would ever be able to forget it.

Even Jia, who thought she was hardboiled to stomach such scenes, felt a nauseating sensation creeping up her throat.

Mingshen said, "Kids should be careful about swinging dangerous knives~ Didn’t your mother ever teach you that?"

He emptied the remaining fluid into his eye as he whistled. "You shouldn’t slash a national treasure. Even ten lives of yours wouldn’t compensate for a scar on my beautiful face."

He left the syringe inside his eye as the man fell on his back. "H-Help...Help...Aaaahhhhh! It hurts!!!!"

An excruciating pain erupted in his left eye but he could do nothing to end it. If he would even accidentally touch the syringe, a pain akin to a thousand needles would shoot up inside. His vision started to blur as a lump started to form in his socket.

The third man now watched his second partner at the end of his rope too. Something reddish and almost ghoulish bubbled in his eye as he flapped his body in extreme pain, which then stopped forever.

Mingshen could see the wheels of his brain churning to find a solution - which was to grab Jia’s fallen gun. But it was far off, so he was eyeing Lim’s gun instead.

Jia read the same calculation in his eyes. Before he could lunge at it, she grabbed his ankle and pushed him hard off balance. He fell backwards and his neck struck against the bed’s corner.

*Snap*

The third man gasped but it was only for a moment as he let out his last breath a second later too. Jia’s intention was to only stop him from reaching for her gun. But it so happened that the strike against the bed’s hard and pointed corner came at a very odd angle. It bent and snapped his neck.

"His poor spinal cord," Mingshen shook his head.

Jia’s eyes widened in shock.

I didn’t mean to kill him.

Mingshen counted. "Hm~ One, two, three. All dead."

His eyes shone and he clapped once in delight. "As always, a day without Yang Mingshen in the spotlight is a day wasted~ Let’s celebrate, shall we?"

Zou Haoran exclaimed in panic. "This is utter nonsense! Why am I being suddenly questioned? Shouldn’t you be grilling Zhang Feiyu?"

"I did. He doesn’t remember anything," Huojin said.

"Because he blanked out? Isn’t that a convenient excuse?"

"It becomes a convenient medium to exploit for people who know about this too, right? You and Hu Linglu know about his blank outs because it has happened with him here in the office too."

"So what?"

"It means that you know that under extreme stress - including something like seeing his boss dead, could overwhelm him. He would not be able to think straight and if he blanked out, he wouldn’t remember anything. That includes seeing his boss already dead when he came inside his office."

Hu Linglu’s eyes widened. "Huh? How can he be dead? Zhang Feiyu was the only one to go inside."

"How can you be so sure that Zou Haoran never left his seat?"

"Our cubicles are right beside each other. Of course I would notice if he left his seat, right?"

"Yeah she is right. You are not making any sense, Inspector Mo!"

Huojin said, "But you also said that you were too buried in your work to even look anywhere else. Besides, you felt he was there only you were illusioned to think that."

"How can that be possible?"

Huojin took them outside where their cubicles were. "Take your seat, Miss. Hu."

She was doubtful but still did as asked. He took Zou Haoran’s seat. "Now act exactly the way you were this morning. The way you were working on your deadline with extreme focus. You will turn your head only when I say so."

"Okay."

Hu Linglu pulled her chair forward. She leaned closer to her laptop just like how she was this morning. Yet she was still trying to sneak a peek just a tiny bit. But Huojin was still in his place so she quickly looked back at her screen.

After ten minutes, Huojin called out to her. A little curious and excited, she looked his way only to be left shocked. Huojin wasn’t in his seat.

"Huh? Where are you?"

"Here." He was on the other side.

She looked dumbfounded. "When did you go there? You were always in your seat!"

"No, I wasn’t. I left the seat after four minutes."

"Impossible! I could see your head’s shadow from the corner of my eye."

"That was not my head. It’s the topmost headrest of the seat. The sun’s light from outside the window coupled with the office lights on the roof above cast a shadow beyond the laptop in the shape of a person’s head. The support handle below it looked like a person’s neck which could give an illusion that somebody was actually seated."

"A-Ah...But your coat! The coat is still-"

She saw the coat still hanging from the back of the seat. The sleeves were bent parallely to the seat’s armrest.

"You see how it also adds to the illusion? The coat is placed in a very particular way even though it might seem random. The coat’s shoulder edges would look like a real person’s shoulder. With its sleeves along the seat’s armrest, it would again seem like a person is resting his arm on the armrest as he works. The wrist part of the coat goes beyond your view inside his cubicle. That’s because you shouldn’t be able to identify that there is no hand coming out of that coat’s sleeve."

Huojin let out a knowing smile at Zou Haoran. "Otherwise it would break the well-crafted illusion that your colleague Zou Haoran wasn’t in his seat for sometime. And that was before Zhang Feiyu went inside to meet Kong Chuanli."
