Chapter 106: The burger call

"Say the name, Hao Rongjun. Who ordered you to kidnap Danya?"

Inside the interrogation room, Jia faced the obsessed lover Hao Rongjun, who had kidnapped Danya to force her mother, Wenqian into marrying him. But it turned out to be more than just a simple obsessive lover case when she heard him mumble about somebody’s involvement with it.

Hao Rongjun threw her a blank look. "Nobody."

"I clearly heard you mentioning somebody.

’They said that Wenqian will be mine if I do this...’

This is what you had said. Who is ’they?’"

"I didn’t say anything like that," he narrowed his eyes. "Don’t act haughty because you caught me. Wenqian is mine. I will get her no matter what!"

"Provided you walk out of jail which I don’t see happening."

He let out a sneer. "Just watch. I will be out and free in no time."

Jia smiled. "Because they will help you?"

"I don’t know who you are talking about."

"What I really wonder is when?" Jia leaned back, folding her arms. "It’s been around what? Two months or so since the kidnapping incident. I don’t see any angel coming to get you. I guess the angel left your side when I locked you in handcuffs."

He clenched his jaw, seemingly rattled.

"You can keep waiting for two more months or two more years. It wouldn’t matter. Nobody is coming to get you, certainly not your angel. But..."

She tilted her head. "What you CAN do is talk about that angel and do a favor for yourself. You lead us to him or her, and the court can consider lessening your punishment."

He scoffed. "You think I am dumb to fall for your honey words? You would never let me free."

"You don’t hear well, do you? Of course, your punishment won’t magically disappear. You were a threat to a little girl’s life. You have to pay the punishment for it. But it’s up to you whether you will be in jail for life imprisonment or eventually get to see the outside world after a few years."

Hao Rongjun went quiet.

Jia pushed the chair and got up. "Think about it. I believe you will be at least that selfish."

She shut the door behind her and met Huojin.

"Were you serious about letting him go scot free in exchange for information about the culprit?"

Jia smiled. "I am sure he will be smart enough to grab the dangling carrot in front of him. There ain’t no angel. He will realize it sooner or later. My job is just to show the carrot, not let him eat it."

"Wicked~ I like it," Huojin gave her a fist bump.

They came back to their desks and immediately heard a frustrated officer put down the phone. "For the tenth time, this is the police bureau, not a burger joint!"

Jia asked, taken aback, "Is everything alright?"

The officer cried. "That woman is definitely dead drunk to pull the same prank again and again. She is calling here to place a burger order. She refuses to listen to me that this is the bureau."

She blinked twice and was about to speak when the emergency line buzzed once more.

"It’s the same number again!" He exclaimed, exasperated.

"Wait," Jia held her palm.

She walked over and received the call. "Beijing Police Bureau. Please state your emergency."

"I want to order a cheese burger," a woman’s voice echoed.

Jia stared ahead. "Mam, are you aware that you are calling the police?"

"Yes."

"And you still want to order a cheese burger?"

"Yes."

She asked after a moment, "Are you being held hostage?"

Jia heard a clear but a desperate breath of relief. "...Yes."

The officer widened his eyes. His mouth dropped into an O as it finally clicked him that ordering a cheeseburger was a plea for help.

"Keep pretending that you are ordering. Give answers to my questions in just a yes or no. Is it a man?" Jia asked.

"Yes. I want extra mayonnaise."

"More than one?"

"No, I wouldn’t like pickles."

"Does he have a gun?"

"Yes, a double chicken patty will be great."

"Are you hurt? Do you need medical treatment?"

"Yes, please add some french fries to the order too."

Another officer was already tracing the address of the woman caller. Jia asked to confirm, "Do you know the address where you are at? Any landmarks?"

"Yes, thank you for taking my order. Please note down the address."

Jia gave a hand signal and the other officer quickly verified. Time was of essence and she wanted to be doubly sure.

"You did great. We are on our way. Until then, just be quiet and do everything as he says."

"Please..." the woman’s voice trembled, "Please hurry. I-I am really hungry."

Jia’s fingers twitched with a need to show that abuser his place. "We will be there. Bear with it for five more minutes please. Then it all will be over, I promise."

She hung up and by then, the police car was already on the curb waiting for Jia and Huojin. Huojin cracked his knuckles and grinned. "Just when I was in the mood to practice my punches."

From the other side, Officer Xiyang hurried too. "Superintendent Song. Superintendent Mo. We just got a distress call. There has been a death at Infiniti Technologies."

Two cases came at once.

Jia said, tense, "We cannot afford to be late. Who knows what that man will do to her?"

Huojin suggested. "You handle the hostage situation. I will take over the case at Infiniti Technologies."

"Great. I will hurry then."

The officer who had ignored the woman’s earlier calls said to Jia, "P-please let me accompany you too! I want to make up for my mistake...I was stupid in not paying attention to her distress."

Jia nodded. "Get in."

On the way, she dropped a quick text to Mingshen. ’Be here in five minutes. Medical emergency.’

Jia and Officer Lim arrived at the address without ringing the police siren. She expected Mingshen to be already present but he was nowhere.

Where is he?

"Spicy, I am here!"

Jia turned and her expression instantly turned ugly not because he reached on time but because he reached on time in a Limousine. His car had almost blocked off the road’s entry and exit.

Officer Lim wished he could faint. "What the hell!? A limousine!?"

Jia had no time to waste and so with a heavy heart, she ignored the big limousine’s existence and said, "Officer Lim and I will rescue the woman. You stay put here and be ready with your medical necessities."

"What? I am not coming with you?" Mingshen sounded displeased.

"So that you can ruin another delicate hostage situation like you did with Danya? No thanks. Also, you are a civilian."

"Calling me just a civilian is extremely offensive."

"The man has a gun and I don’t have time to waste on you."

"What if you need my help?" He blinked. "Men with guns are very dangerous you know~"

She gave him a stare. "Not more than you. Do me a favor by not helping me. It never fares well for me."

She went off with large strides towards the apartment building. "Come with me, Officer Lim. Let’s get her out right now."
