Chapter 103: A new face in the lab

Chapter 103: A new face in the lab

Mingshen stared at the same She tattoo on Wang Lei’s neck. With his surgical mask and gloves donned on, he carefully made a slit at the horizontal line of the letter H at its center. Wang Lei lay dead on the operating table but Mingshen’s eyes were lit up with vitality. He operated through the tattoo as if a child was enthralled by a puzzle.

His assistant, Bojing, kept his gaze tracking the fluoroscopy machine. It used X-rays to display real-time interior of nerves and blood vessels of Wang Lei’s neck as it guided Mingshen to navigate through them.

"A l-little deeper..." Bojing said.

He squinted his eyes and tried to find the trace of the chip which they had located before. The same chip through which the voice had echoed, warning Mingshen of not stepping out of his line.

But strangely enough, Bojing couldn’t see that chip anywhere. Mingshen worked his own way through the blood and blood vessels but his scalpel didn’t feel the tap of a foreign object. He looked up at the machine, narrowing his eyes.

The chip wasn’t there anymore. It was as if it had dissipated into thin air without any trace.

A look of worry flashed across Bojing’s eyes. "H-How come I don’t see the chip anymore?"

He took out the previous X-Ray and saw the chip located at the exact position he was staring at now. But the difference was that now, the chip was nowhere to be seen.

"It got dissolved into the system. That’s the only explanation," Mingshen said, tilting his head. "It’s literally become part of blood now."

Bojing scratched his chin. "How can a chip dissolve? Y-you mean somebody planted a chip in t-these people, monitored them, tracked them, talked and w-warned us and then automatically d-disintegrated into the blood?"

He laughed. "Obviously a person to warn Yang Mingshen cannot be a simple person. I am so very impressed. At least I am not wasting time with amateurs. It must be the same with the other goons we caught too. We won’t find any chips inside them either. It’s gone."

Bojing cried. "T-That’s terrible...B-but we can test the blood for any traces, right?"

"Glad that your intelligence is intact, Assistant Lu. Use every device we have, run all specialized tests and find any trace, no matter how minute. There will be something that won’t match with the body’s natural system."

He nodded. "W-will do."

They got out and Bojing took off his gloves and gown in a hurry to head somewhere.

"Why are you in a rush?"

"I-I have to meet Shilin today. I have to return his bike," he beamed.

"The one for which I am taking the rent from your salary."

"Y-Yes!"

Mingshen cocked his brow. "Follow me."

"B-But I have to leave. It’s r-rude to keep somebody waiting..."

"Will you come or I have to drag you?" He dryly asked.

Bojing didn’t want to get stuck in another work and waste anymore time so he zapped past Mingshen to leave the lab. On the way, he remembered that he left the bike key in Mingshen’s office, so he took a sharp turn, crashed the door open and then crashed once again into someone he didn’t expect to be there.

The young man was almost knocked off balance, but he somehow regained his footing while also helping out Bojing.

Bojing was struck with dizziness by the impact. "I-I am s-sorry. I d-didn’t expect s-somebody to be h-here..." he could still see stars floating in front of his eyes as his head rocked back and forth.

The young man returned a polite smile. "Nice to meet you again, Mr. Lu."

The stars disappeared and Bojing snapped back to his senses. He recognized the familiar voice and looked up at Shilin standing right in front of him.

"Sh-Shilin?" He gasped, incredulous.

"Yes, Mr. Lu."

"What a-are you doing here? W-weren’t we s-supposed to meet o-outside for the bike? Oh, you p-personally wanted to come here to take your bike?"

"Not exactly just for the bike."

"S-so?"

Mingshen entered his office and sneered at his assistant. "If only you allowed people to talk, Assistant. Don’t you think you would easily get your answers if you just don’t run away?"

Bojing gulped and shrunk.

Mingshen took his seat and leaned his elbow on the table.

Shilin smiled and greeted him. "Good morning, Dr. Yang."

"Keep the pleasantries for later. I am just interested in knowing if you will be useful here. I don’t like dead weights hanging in my lab."

"I assure you I am certainly useful and certainly not a dead-weight. I am more than capable."

Bojing blinked and alternated his gaze between them, confused. "W-what is going on here?"

Mingshen smiled. "This young man wants to work here."

He threw a blank gaze. "Huh?"

He then looked at Shilin, shocked. "You are studying m-medicine?"

"Yes, Mr. Lu."

Bojing was certainly taken aback by this unexpected information. "But the others in your group a-aren’t."

"Brightside University is a very big and comprehensive university. It covers study of all major branches. We hung together but that didn’t mean our courses were the same. We are all in different fields like how Aang was in architecture or Daxia in literature. Though we do have some common subjects so we have common classes from time to time."

"B-but with Geng Anhe hurt and all...y-you didn’t act like somebody involved in medicine."

Shilin looked surprised. "I would have definitely helped out, but I didn’t say much because Dr. Yang was already there with her. Everybody in the medicine field knows him. Me talking when a distinguished doctor like him is in charge is like I am overstepping my boundaries."

"Should I be impressed by your sense of awareness or is this you buttering me up?" Mingshen smirked.

"I don’t butter people like you because people like you are smart enough to understand when somebody is buttering and cheesing," he pleasantly smiled back.

Bojing then remembered that while Jia conducted the investigation at the park, Shilin was trying to calm down Yibo’s fury.

’You should calm down, Yibo. Inspector is just doing her job. The scans don’t lie. Dr. Yang is right. Anhe cannot suffer that much damage by an accident. Even if she was running at full speed with all that adrenaline inside her, crashing against a wall might have at most caused abrasions and a concussion, not a deformity in the very bone.’

The last part indeed now felt to him like Shilin knew what he was talking about.

"I-I see now! S-so will you be really working here?"

"Yes. Since I had the pleasure to meet Dr. Yang, I wondered if it was alright for me to ask him if I could work as his assistant here? Or like an intern? Naturally, I will be focusing on my studies too."

Bojing stared at Mingshen in wonder. He was surprised to know that he would even listen to the request, much less entertain it. He didn’t let just anybody step in the lab, certainly not work here - which was an indirect certificate in its own that Shilin wasn’t just anybody. The mere fact that he was standing in his office was because Mingshen deemed him to be capable.

But even if he was capable, was that enough to let him work here?

With how popular Mingshen was as a doctor coupled with his charisma, it wasn’t a secret that every budding medical professional wanted to work under him at least once. Internship under his guidance was everybody’s dream, but it was also a well-known fact that Mingshen didn’t accept students to teach or train.

Mingshen stared at Shilin and said, "Start from tomorrow. And you will work under Assistant Lu."
